- Stimela is a South African Afro-fusion band, founded by Ray Phiri in 1982. They created Fire, Passion and Ecstasy (1982), Look, Listen and Decide (1986) as well as the controversial People Don't Talk So Let's Talk (1992).
In 1985 Paul Simon asked Ray and drummer Isaac Mtshali to join his Graceland project, which was successful but also helped the South Africans to make names for themselves abroad.
Ray was to collaborate with Paul Simon again on Simon's Rhythm of the Saints album, which saw him perform on stages such as Central Park and Madison Square Garden as well as appearing on top television shows in the USA.

Made in South Africa in the time of apartheid Great band ,Stimela it was a pleasure to listen to them on Radio Metro and Radio Bobotaswana
Watched this super group twice in Zimbabwe, one of the occasions as the opener for UB40. The Souls Brothers were also there. It was memorable, so indelible and I feel goosebumps to this day when I recall those magical times.
Back home Zimbabwe, Stimela was and still one of my favourite artists!! When Zimbabwe used to be good, the likes of Tracy Chapman, Paul Simon, Lady Black Smith Mambazo, Randy Crawford, Burning Spears Dennis Brown, Bob Marley to name a few! We’re all scattered right across the world!
