Navid is a hero in Scotland as are Sanjeev Kohli the actor who plays him and indeed his brother Hardeep Kohli. Real proud Scottish people who are also Indian. Some of the most valued members of Glasgow society and Scotland in general have their origin story starting in India. You should come visit if you can.

He's a great character and his mix of Indian accent with a Scottish twang makes his delivery even better.

Love this guy. My favourite character. His wife steals so many scenes too but never shows her face.

Navid is a good strong character, not as subservient as Apu in the Simpsons. He has exactly the right attitude to survive in Scotland.

The guy who plays Navid is Sanjeev Kohli who is an Indian Sikh was was brought up in Scotland. He was only in his 30s when he played this part. He was the best character in the show.

  • @jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering

Lol , the good news is that the vast majority of Scot’s do not know what Meena is saying but we can guess 😅

If you watch the full episodes of Still Game, you must wait until the end as there's always always a clip after the credits

In Scotland we are a bit possessive of our Scots/Indian population. "OUR" Indian's. Down south they don't tend to call themselves "English". Up here we'd be offended if they didn't call themselves
    Scots.

      Totally. Love from Glasgow, folks.
The actress who plays Mina translates the lines herself, occasionally altering them slightly to translate better from English.
      Glad you’re enjoying.

I think Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan were very generous writers, giving some brilliant lines to the rest of the ensemble, and in Navid they created the most wonderful of characters.

His name is also a play on words. His last name is Harrid, therefore his little store is known as Harrid's, which is a reference to the high end British department store Harrod's

    Meena is Navid's wife, definitely.
There is one episode where Meena travels back to India, and Navid has to mind the shop alone. All the time he worries that Meena'll be seeing one of her old suitors, that she had as a young woman, who subsequently became a Bollywood star.
Maybe try watching full episodes and you'll get the context of the jokes, and also begin to understand the Scottish accent.
(It's the same for us English guys ...it takes a while to understand them)

The actor, Sanjeev Kohli, at the time was around 30 years old. He was born in London and moved to Scotland when he was young I think 3-4 years old so he's really Scottish. His actual accent in real life is very Scottish too, but he is making an amazing caricature of his family and the fact in Scotland and probably all of UK we have lots of Indian shopkeepers. I have loved watching Sanjeev in all his television etc
