Guangzhou City is one of China's largest cities. It is a super city of the south - a city full of hidden surprises and adventures just waiting to happen. Although my trip to Guangzhou was short, I absolutely loved my time there and cannot wait to return.
In this video I take you all around the city to see what it has to offer. We start out at Guangzhou's biggest (and best) pedestrian street, Beijing Road (北京路), we then wonder out to Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), we then wonder through Guangzhou's 'Little Africa' - an area known as Xiaobei (小北). Of course, we needed to eat so we made a stop at some local joints to try real, authentic Yuecai (粤菜), aka Cantonese food. The dim sum definitely lived up to its reputation! We also make a trip to the premier party area of Guangzhou, the Party Pier (琶醍) located right on the Pearl River (珠江).
If you'd like to see my other video that takes an in-depth tour of the 'African Village of Guangzhou' you can watch it here: • Xiaobei - the 'Little ...

Hi, I am a Guangzhou local and I am happy to tell you that the taxi driver did not mislead you, he did take you to a local restaurant recognized by Guangzhou locals. The restaurant you went to is "泮溪酒家t", which is one of the four major garden restaurants in Guangzhou and is very popular among locals. We are also happy to promote it to out-of-town visitors. You can see that there are many local elderly customers, and you know that it is an authentic local restaurant in Guangzhou. The reason why you think it decoration is unusual is because Garden Restaurant is a unique culture of old Guangzhou.

By the way, authentic Cantonese cuisine has very high requirements on the freshness of ingredients and cooking techniques, which means high costs. So we in Guangzhou are very willing to pay for authentic Cantonese food (the meal can be expensive and very far away).
On the other hand, maybe the style of Panxi Restaurant is not what you expect, but if you ask a random local, this restaurant represents "authentic" and "traditional" (the price is also very affordable). I assure you that you did enjoy an authentic Guangzhou breakfast based on the taxi driver’s recommendation. Because fly restaurants and enjoying food in an elegant and comfortable manner are both part of Guangzhou’s food culture.

Had a trip to GZ from HK on Christmas eve, went to Dongzhankou and I couldn’t believe my eyes, felt like i was in Harajuku for a sec, teenagers were fashionable, people were friendly, sociable . Definitely a different experience to other parts of China

I always have question, cases like 1:35 i have seen it occasionally throughout China, i always wonder was it because China’s development been so rapid that those from the rural 20-30 years ago now living in the city still have that rural mindset in them and do you think with the newer generation coming up seemingly more socially aware, would those occurrence no longer happen or do you think it’s just a China thing.

Good question... I think it's a bit of both. You see it less than before, but it's still pretty darn common. There does seem to be a trend of it lessening though, which sort of leads me to believe that maybe... just maybe, eventually... someday (far in the future) they just MIGHT actually stop doing it... but I'm not holding my breath nor am I getting my hopes up. I think there's a chance that it is, to some degree, just a China thing and will never disappear competely unless the government gets involved and fines ppl for it. @@KC-ls8zn

I went to GZ once. Walked though this huge pet market. It had all sorts of small animals. It was wild!

My home is quite near those African suburb. About 10 minute by bike. One thing I should tell is that those African suburb is quite safe. I often walked down those street at midnight to eat African food. The Chinese government do send some police officers walking down the street at night(which police are rarely petrol in other part of Guangzhou like that) but it is quite safe. I don't feel any danger walking down the street at midnight even at some small valley.
I heard from the news that there are some African gangsters, but they never bother non African people, and the policeman arrest everyone from the gang some years ago.

Do you ever get to eat a traditional American breakfast there (pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage)? That's one thing I missed a lot during my visits. I was surprised that they ate the same kind of foods for all three meals each day. Fortunately I stayed at some western hotels on occasion that had breakfast buffets that came pretty close to American style.
