Many of them selfishly feel the waves belong to them, and that if you’re a less talented surfer then somehow you’re less deserving of their respect in the water, and subsequently less deserving of waves. Guys act like fools for a variety of reasons, not just because beginners get in their way.

Malibu surfing permit 10grand, swamis 5grand, North shore 10grand and weekly payments for visitors. I already can't afford gass and gear. Bad idea from my standpoint. I would just spend a lot of time in jail or on the run night surfing in a mask.

The first time I surfed Topanga I cut off a local trying to drop in. I fall, scramble to get on my board and look to see the guy I cut off paddling towards me with a clenched fist saying “you took my wave!” Or something to that effect. Once I said “I’m just learning” he immediately flipped, HE then apologized back to me and offered to help me learn. It was right out of point break except it had a better ending.
I slalom water skied all my adult life cuz I lived in the inland southeast - was too old when wakeboarding started though I did get a little in. I was 67 last time I did it. Always wished I’d grown up in a surfing area.

A license is ideal, which would merely evaluate surf etiquette. The local governments in conjunction with local surf schools can pull it off. I got hit with a fin the other day, worst injury I've had in a while. Hit me right on my bicep tendon on the inside of my right arm. The bruise is insane 😂 thankfully will heal fine though. It's dangerous to do this sort of stuff. I'd never surf in a crowded place like some of the places shown in this video.

I think have a take a test on the spot that takes like 20-30 min and cost like 30 bucks that gives you a licence for crowded spots might be good. like if there's 3 people no need for a licence, if there's a crowd, having a licence would be good.

When I was learning to surf another surfer almost drowned me like this twice in the same day. I was practicing far from everyone else. Then this guy continues to surf wave after wave slowly moving up the water towards me. Then I accidentally cut him off CAUSE I DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK IM DOING REALLY. The first time he grabbed my board and immediately took a wave. Then it pulled me under and I couldn’t get my head above the water cause I was getting dragged by my ankle. Then the second time I had untethered myself from the board. And when I fell off he was just passing by and takes my board and goes SUPER far from me and I have to swim back to shore cause I’m not the best swimmer. I never got that board back. None of the other surfers there would help me get it. I guess they saw me cut him off or knew him or something. Haven’t wanted to surf ever since unfortunately. Cause it was really fun. After watching you guys show for a while it seems all surfers are like that.
That sucks the reason that happened is because one that guy is an asshole and two because you dropped in on him without having priority which means to be on the inside of the wave. Im from Australia so these sorts of things generally dont happen as we have alot of space and different beaches where begginers or advanced surfers can go to. I hope you try it again sometime.

If you take a step back and remove emotions from the situation, these accidents are happening because of a high density of surfers in the same area with a large variance in ability. There are two obvious solutions, to spread out and reduce the density, or figure out some priority system to communicate who has right of way. I propose a series of lights should be installed on the front and back of the surfboard, and that a regulated system of hand signals be developed so as to maximalize surfer communication.
The person who is on the inside and is on the wave first is the one one who owns that wave to ensure safety. if two people are beside eachother paddling for the wave the one on the inside gets that wave.
I'v been surfing for 38 years, have decent skils, I grew up surfing in a spot known in Brazil for its localism, and I swear, I will never be so stupid, childish, selfish, and simian to the point of fighting with someone over a wave. For me everyone is welcome 🤙🏾✌🏽
