Looking at this now in retrospect George was very emotionally intelligent and media savvy, and honest.

I remember this one. I was 13 years old in 1984 and was amazed by how he carried himself. After all of these beautiful years, he is still one of the greatest people ever. ❤

His eyes are mesmerizing!!! So handsome!!! I like his solo work (High Hat, Matyr Mantras) as much as his work with Culture Club. So sad he has never regained commercial success post-CC. This was 1988: more drug/legal troubles were to come in future years, and CC did get reunited. Glad to see he finally got sober in 2008. He's still cute and charming as ever today at 60. I find Boy George interesting as he's a very spiritual person, who made mistakes, as we all do. Can't wait to see his biopic next year!
I totally agree with you Hector about all that you said. And yes, his eyes are definitely mesmerizing. As far as I'm concerned the biopic can't come out fast enough.

I just loved, loved this interview. This one of the best ones (in my opinion) that he ever did. George is always an amazing person to listen to. Phil Donahue had to think an awful lot of George to have taken his show to England to do another interview with him. Yeah, Donahue was cool. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Donahue was a fan. Otherwise he wouldn't have had George on twice. I thought George looked so good at this point. I was hoping (as many others were as well) that he would make a comeback at this point.

@@lessismore8533 I recorded this from two different channels when it first aired. I watched it day in & day out for the longest time. This broadcast in October 1988 in the US. Here in the US, fans really didn't know what was going on with "Don't Cry" & "Tense Nervous Headache" in the UK. Then, the album was delayed because "Don't Cry" stalled in the UK charts. Next news I heard was that George would be working with Gene Griffin & Teddy Riley & four tracks would be added to the album for the UK, US, Canada, etc., & the album would be called "Trippin' Over Mother." (Europe & Asia already "Tense Nervous Headache" released.) The title was changed to "High Hat" for North America & was released in the US February 28, 1989, where "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip" was doing well at US R&B & crossover-pop radio & performing well in the US clubs. "Trip" stalled at #68 in the UK & releasing the album, in any form, was abandoned & shelved in the UK.

They were on just about every television show, their music was on just about every radio station & their videos were played constantly on MTV & other video channels/shows, & they were in numerous magazines & newspapers. Boy George was THE subject at the time. I'm sure there were people who were unaware of George or Culture Club, but not many people. Even older people knew of Boy George, whether they liked him or not. Of course, there were people who liked George, but wouldn't admit it!

I feel bad for him, having to field so many questions from the audience about whether he'll return to his addiction and if he'll take on the responsibility of saving a generation from the same fate. You can see how exhausting and demoralizing it becomes for him after a while, because he doesn't have all the answers yet, but he's in a position where he has to answer anyway. Fame is a big part of the problem. People expected George to be an avatar of health and an example for kids/addicts/bigots while he was still learning how to properly take care of himself. He handles it well, but you can see him struggling with the fact that talking to (often rude and insensitive) strangers about his own fragile recovery and mental health is apparently part of his job description. We put celebrities in such a strange position, like they owe us access to all their private struggles just because we buy their music or watch their films.

Never took this artist seriously, thinking he was only skin-deep. Without going to dive into his art, I have to admit that at least he is smart.
George wasnt the only eccentric star in the 80s..there was Bowie and Madonna too. So does that make them skin deep too? Georges brother David said it best and I agree, "Georges best talent is his songwriting". But he can also sing well too. Its your choice if you want to make conclusions without going deep but you'll miss many things..not just about George,but any human in general really
