This reminds me of growing up as a kid in the 70s I started kindergarten in 1971 and then I was in high school at 1981 so I graduated 1985 but all of these commercials just bring back people don’t understand the kids in the messy these kids in the 2000 millennials and people that were born in the mid 80s that far back even they don’t remember what he was just all over the place and he was like everywhere he went everything he touched was gold he was beloved by everybody it’s like you didn’t even think he was black or white he was just he was OJ. That’s what I remember when I was a kid, so sad he had to do that you know everything about he was his image and he never got that back after what he did and I never wanted to believe it but my sister is a cop and she’s like Melinda people up at LPT for saying for you, he did it and I’m like it’s hard sad but this spring back
Hard for the younger generations to understand how loved and popular OJ was in those days. His fall from grace with public was spectacular.
fortunately he escaped the MeToo
Exactly even I didn't realize how much of a household name he was especially in the seventies and eighties
OJ.. also had a guest appearance on "Here's Lucy."
@@will27ns Also "Medical Center".
@@will27ns Also "Father Knows Best." Okay... I made that up.
Whenever I see OJ's Hertz commercials I remember how even when he was in Roots, they just had to put in a scene of him running and jumping over stuff
Wonder if Ron ran & jumped or just stood there in awe. Guess we'll never know. As the de@d can't tell their story. I don't care what Michael Baden says.
That was his acting limits. All revolving around his movements on the football field. In all his movies they said "Run OJ, Jump OJ, Fall OJ, Get Up OJ, ...After doing that in football for so long, that acting was perfect for him
@@bullydakidd2023 they said he did that the night Ron & Nicole died. Running, jumping & stabbing all over the place.

I don't think people realize the contract OJ had with Hertz. He was the face of the largest rental car company in the US. Not just appearing on TV but in magazines and newspapers.
It was extremely lucrative at the time. He was still under contract with Hertz in 1994 having been in their commercials for 17 years. According to Ad Age OJ was the first to prove that whites would buy products advertised by a black person on TV. Remember this was 1977 long before attitudes had changed. OJ's personality came across the TV and all people related to it. The Hertz commercials were aired constantly and they were a major advertiser on Sunday NFL games. Think back before then, which NFL player did you see doing TV commercials, Joe Namath. Joe Greene's coke commercial started first appeared in 1979. OJ was already doing Hertz's commercials before then.
What's more amazing is that when OJ played in the NFL it was for the obscure Buffalo Bills, not the Dallas Cowboys. Buffalo didn't get to a Superbowl until years after OJ's career has ended. How many people saw him play on TV. All that existed was the two games on Sunday and Monday Night Football. Most viewers only saw their local markets. OJ played for an AFC team. When Juice came to the 49ers his best years were behind him. He was known for breaking Jim Brown's single season rushing record. Much of his notoriety came from his USC days but college football didn't command the viewers it did today. It's pretty remarkable how big an entity OJ became. He was certainly more well known for his Hertz commercials, TV and film work than his football career.
This was the best and most concise summary of the O.J. Simpson saga I have ever read.

He had a natural charisma.

The way O.J. looks into Marguerite's eyes. Time and again I see this in photos.
She was stunning. I think with a certain amount of fame, there's a different lifestyle that comes along -- and I don't think she would've been a participant. They also lost a child, and many couples don't recover from that.
This is how he became a household known name. He would have been just a football player without being a spokesman
Wow a $1.29 dinner. That's like free now, I had no idea he was close to my parents age
He was a charismatic, handsome guy. Great in the Naked Gun movies. But I have to say, he has a HUGE head.
That was actually part of Johnnie Cochran's closing argument when he was debunking the prosecution's claim that OJ wore a knit cap to try to disguise himself. OJ had such a large head, Cochran said, that he would be recognizable anywhere, knit cap or not. That was just before the famous "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." line. It would be like the Will Smith slap today, but worse.. two people lost their lives which nothing compares! Such a shame to realize his terrible fall from grace!
and both controlled by evil women
Probably the only thing that comes close that people would understand is the "Be like Mike" era. Except OJ was a sweet person that was always approachable. Some people have described him as "two OJ's". For what it's worth, my own husband before he passed wrestled and played football and he definitely had CTE. The rage was absolutely insane. I was fortunate because being his wife, he put me on pedestal. We argued of course, but I knew when to back off and he knew when he needed to be alone-- but I did see him flip on other people, and it happened fast. I could also sense when his agitation levels were up and knew when he needed to be soothed. Nicole didn't have all the information I did because the NFL spent multi- millions to suppress and bury this research as much as they could. I feel like there is plenty that could be learned by the athletes participating as well as people that choose to be involved with them. There is no cure, and I promise you CTE is very dangerous. I can only imagine what cocaine use added to that mix did.
There's also the fact that nothing I knew about the OJ case to or against his defense was actually what it was presented to be. His innocence or guilt doesn't matter at this point-- but there are many other cases of CTE and violence. If we could really start to understand this, other people's lives could be saved. The amount of h0m0cide and svicide could be lowered if people really understood what they were dealing with.
And...he was one of the greatest running backs ever to play football.

Many people don't understand what a big deal it was to have O.J. Simpson in Hertz commercials. Back in 1975, $69 is roughly equivalent to $298.59 today. With the minimum wage in Florida at $2.10 an hour back then, renting a car would’ve taken about 82% of your weekly salary. In contrast, today’s minimum wage is $13.00, and renting a car from Hertz costs about $168 a week, so just over 32% of your weekly income. The rental car industry has changed a lot; in the '70s, renting a car was for the business class. An average person couldn’t afford to rent from Hertz and certainly not a black person. That’s why using O.J. Simpson to attract upper-class white consumers was a huge risk on Hertz' part. His success in these ads is a testament to his ability to transcend racial barriers.
