Copper John 4k Fly Tying - Trout attractor and lead fly - McFly Angler Tying Sessions

- The Copper John is a classic pattern that has been around for ages, and also its one of the most popular attractor and lead fly ever created. This fly is heavy, its flashy, and it just works to get your flies down and attract the trout with some flashiness. But its not overly flashy in order to scare them away. For the most part you will get strikes on this fly, but I like to fish this with a trailing fly that is more realistic. Something that when the trout come up to observe this fly, they see the trailer fly and decide to hit that. There is no need to fish this with lead to get down, especially if you use a tungsten bead up front. This will get your other fly down quick.
Now I am using Risen fly hooks that are absolutely amazing for the money. Really they are the best hook in this price range ive ever used. Also their beads are unbeatable prices for the quality as well. Go ahead and check them out, along with their other gear like rods and reels and fly line. Go to www.risenfly.com. At checkout type in "McFly" in the discount code section for your discount. This is a one time code so use it once, and then you can sign up with them for their mailer and they will extend a discount even further.

Thanks for not cutting out the mistake we all have them and it makes me feel better that everyone has them!!
Lol! I figure mistakes actually help teach more than the non mistakes. Lol!
@@McFlyAngler For real tho! We need to know what to do when they happen.
👍
Love that ur real life tying. Bobbin squeaks, breaking stuff, u tying & starting again. Love it! & the kids in the background but u can hardly hear them
Lol thanks. There are days ya know? Lol
I’m REALLY glad that you didn’t edit out your mistakes! I’m getting a vice and a few supplies to start tying flies. It’s easy to think this is easy by watching people with years of experience.
Yeah we all make mistakes. Even those with years of experience. Heck, even some of the long time pros like gallop, craven, and all of them. Don’t worry about your mistakes, instead use them to learn from
@@McFlyAngler I've been tying this one for a few months, not every day, but often, still looks like I tossed a hook and materials into a tornado and out popped a tangle =)
When I make a fly-tying video, I might do two practice ties, which go perfectly. Then when I start the video tie, I'll totally trash the fly and have to re-shoot. Thus is the world of fly tying. Thanks for the video.
Lol yea this happens to me a lot also! Hahaha!
I love that you showed the boo-boos and re-dos. It helps us newbie fly tiers not feel so bad when we have to do the same. Keep up the great work!
Thanks man, yeah I mean we all make mistakes.
Most realistic life experience fly tying video! Murphy’s Law!
Right? HAHA. I can tie 30 of these in a row with no issues, then I get on camera and it all falls apart. Oh well.... I figured I would leave it in rather than re-film to give more info. Learn from my mistakes right?
Absolutely hilarious, its almost like you're videoing me and narrating it because I swear that's what I do all the time!!! But in my defense I suffer from hand tremors and it can make tying very frustrating at times especially the more intricate detailed flies...
Nice fly tying video. I've had squeaking bobbin n used the oil from side of my nose 2 quiet it down. U can do the same w/metal farrels on older rods 4 ease of disassembly. God Bless n fish on! Keep good ideas coming.
Thanks, yes if it gets too bad I will oil it. However if you add oil it will make it have less tension also so then it’s hard to keep it taught when tying tightly. It’s a trade off. Thanks for the tip
The sweat from the nose..... 😂 good stuff my good. I bet it works just fine too...... tight lines
"Old style fly," lol. To someone my age Copper Johns are still new!
Yeah I guess not super old. 1993, about 30 years ago. I mean it’s not an adams dry fly made in 1922, or better yet the hares ear in 1832…. But still I wouldn’t call it a new pattern. I guess calling it an old pattern is wrong also though.
@@McFlyAngler yeah I'm just laughing at my own age. I definitely remember when they kind of became the hot ticket, I think it was maybe late 90s when I first saw one, then it seemed like they were everywhere!
Yeah, a good fly for sure, and when something works, people use it. Lots of great tiers and fly creations out there, some of the oldies still work though, which shows just how great these tiers of the past were
Great video !! I have subscribed to your channel 👍😀
Thanks for the sub! Glad you liked it.
That is a pretty copper john!
Thank you

I gotta start tying these. Although biot tails drive me crazy as im pretty new to tying. I only use flies for steelhead, thus heavy flies really shine and you can make these in so many colors and sizes
Biot tails drive me crazy also and I’ve been tying for many years. They do get easier but will always be a bit of a pain.
Nice fly, even if part of it was a struggle. Great video.
Lol! Man! I was having a bad day wasn’t I? Lol! I never make mistakes this bad, but hey, sometimes you have bad days right?
A bad day is when you grab the razor blade and clean everything off the hook to start over....
Lol! True!
It would take the rest of my life to try and tie one of those!
LOL they aren't easy, but possible Bob! How are things?
@@McFlyAngler Hi Shawn. I’m doing great and thanks for asking. I’m enjoying every hour on the water just as much as always!
Well I hope you get many many more Bob!
Nice
Thanks
@@McFlyAngler you’re welcome
These flies get down!
LOL that is for sure! Thanks!
Never let the material win. :-) I've faced insurrection of fly tying materials many times. It's never my clumsiness. Ha!
Lol! Oh it’s my clumsiness more than I’d like to admit for sure, however yeah absolutely! Don’t give in! Haha! Thanks man!
A quick overhand knot will safe your work before you cut the material and one knot isn't bulky enough to make any interference before you whip finish .
Yes, Colby, I’ve never had this happen this often on one fly. But I am not one to edit my videos to make myself look good. If you ever watch my fishing channel it’s the same thing. All my mess ups are in there. Lol! Figure people can learn more from mistakes at times than perfect ties. :).
@@McFlyAngler yes..I've watched your channel for a long time. I think you should come back home though. What are you doing over there!
Lol! I wish! I’m here for the health care though. Had some health problems and had to move to a bigger city with better and more affordable healthcare
Try using your finger nail to snug up the copper wire wraps at the starting point !
Yes, absolutely!
Hello mcfly.... you ok on this day? 😅😂good stuff though. Ive only been tying since may this past (23) so its something of a confondence builder for me to see a tuber making the same mistakes or having a rough day.
As fpr your bobbin try cleaning the spool holders. Plastic probably just rubbed off on it and it built up on them
We all make mistakes, and I figure my mistakes prob help people learn more than the wins. Most other tying channels edit that out so that’s why you don’t see it with them.
@@McFlyAngler and we all know mistakes happen no matter how good you are. Like I said I've only been tying since this past May and I have a pretty decent parachute and now a pretty good mayfly. After only a few months I was getting compliments buy a fly shop owner and fly tier of 40 plus years, so of course I started pushing harder. Keep it up my good man I really enjoy watching you tie
That’s awesome man! Yeah always there is a time where it all kinda snaps into place and you can see the drastic change from beginner tying to making some really great looking flies. I’ll let ya know when I hit that point. Haha!
@@McFlyAngler you were typing this up as I was actually trying to tie a copper John. I won't go into details on the open like this but my personal situation does not allow me to tie to well right now. I do what I can almost everyday to improve and I apply my life skills to tying and tying skills to my life. It may sound odd but I do it with all of the things I have high or extreme interests in. Aside from it mostly being patience it's also very psycho logical (I spelled it right lol). Maybe another we could honestly chat. I'm just sure you're busy so I don't wanna take up to much of your time. Thanks for responding though, it's says quite a bit about your character 😊
Hey the copper John is actually a very difficult fly to tie, so don’t beat yourself up on it if it’s doesn’t come out perfect. Many long time tires still have trouble with it. You will get it though at one point, just keep trying. God bless!
I'm a student and the main problem with "school" is that I don't have time to watch your videos.
Sorry! At least maybe the weekend you can watch them?
@@McFlyAngler All weekend
Haha! Thanks Aaron!
GOURGUS although i usually use white ostrich feathers cus they stand out more but idk I make sweet flies !!!
glad you like it. Ostrich would be fine for a larger fly. Not for something this small. Im guessing your tying in size 12 or larger?
@@McFlyAngler yup pretty much
Cool, yeah I figured. Anyway, awesome man! :). So many variations of flies. Many are awesome!
@@McFlyAngler yah! Speaking of which have you seen the books I suggested yet?
No.... sorry. I have kids bro, I can’t read books. Lol
Wd40 😏
Yep I’ve done that pattern a few times also
