I'm from Indonesia, and my country probably knows better than most when we're talking about language assimilation. We have like 700 local languages here but we all speak Indonesian aside of our own local languages. Indonesia's policy on the usage of languages is as follows: 1. Prioritize the national language 2. Preserve the local language 3. Conquer the foreign languages And that has been our way of life for over 70 years since this nation was built. Having a national language will grow more spirit of unity, simply because everyone can understand everybody. I mean imagine if in Indonesia, the government uses Javanese language with no regards on what language the non-javanese people speak. If that happens, the non-javanese people would feel left out by the Indonesian government, but by having the Indonesian language as our national language, no one would have to feel like they were left out by the government anymore. This happens not only between the government and the people, but also between the many different ethnics and communities in Indonesia, and as a result, Indonesian people today have a rather strong sense of unity and tolerance among each other. The way I see it, Trump was looking into things in the long run here. He probably see that the US can have a stronger sense of unity by using language assimilation like Indonesia did. The US from my perspective struggle way more with racism issues compared to Indonesia. For me, it shows the lacking sense of unity among Americans, and I think this is the problem Trump want to fix when he suggested language assimilation to be implemented in the US. Just my opinion tho

@Daniel Farrell So by that logic, anyone who speaks another language is a terrorist. It's America, the land of the free. I personally don't understand the harm in speaking another language, and I especially don't understand how anyone can get angry or offended by hearing someone else speaking a language other than their own. Nobody should have to be rushed and forced to accommodate anyone that isn’t fluent and native in American English. You think most Mexico citizens want to bother to learn English compared to the comfort of their native tongue? No? Ok then.

If You go to a country where the people speak English, then be respectfull and learn English, if You can't then use the Google translator , but no one must to do it if You are the visit.

Thanks for recommending me this 7 years later, CZcams 👍
Its America we're free to speak whatever language we want
So If you go to mexico, how many people you think will understand English? Not much i bet.
MrGuitardude12121 Yeah we can speak whatever language we want but all he is saying is this is a nation where the main used language is English!
You are but doesn’t make it good, beneficial, or helpful.
Flats The Flounder The Pussy Pounder America doesn’t have an official language tho

He’s just jealous he only speaks English 😃
And that isn’t even proper😂
he just wants to provoke, he's not that smart...
Is he tho I mean he is a billionaire and is the president don't think that is someone who is pretty jealous

fort nite yess but language wise he isn’t smart tho. Must say his signature is hella fire.
When you go to Mexico or another South American country, almost nobody will talk to you in english, they expect you to use their native language because you are in their country. This means when you are in America where English is mainly spoken, we expect the same thing
Thing is the US incorporates cultures that historically have spoken Spanish such as New Mexico and Puerto Rico. Other thing is in Mexico there are small American communities that speak English among each other.
As a Puerto Rican (born and raised on the east coast), I agree with you. English is the main language of the land, it's what our most important documents have been written in (such as the constitution), and no one should *have* to learn another language to thrive in this country.
@@joshwolf9038 I agree to a point. No one should have to learn another language besides the dominant language. However, it is not bad to learn another language. Sadly, people get upset when they hear another language and say things like “This is America, we speak English here”. People shouldn’t be discouraged from speaking another language especially if there is no problem communicating which is the basis of speaking a language.
Wrong, you haven’t been in Colombia then. People will try to reply in english to u. 💁🏻♂️
@@timelord-2241Im agree, nothing wrong with speaking a second language, even if you a politician, he is doing it in order to show empathy for his community. Caribbean who were slaves and have no dignity would be agree with the “here we speak english”. However, a Mexican, a Colombian, an Argentinian will speak his mother language with his friends always. Even if we are fluent in english. We r proud of our culture.
The funny thing is with the rise of remote working and the cost of living, a lot of Americans have moved down to Mexico. And the locals there are mad that so many people are speaking English.
They are brave for not disabling the comments.
Why u say that
Lol
Puerto Rico is part of America and they speak Spanish there
Puerto Rico is not part of America but I still don’t believe in what he said

@@odogreacts1373 well yes Puerto Rico is part of America since America consist of North,Central and South America. Puerto Rico is part of America and the US since they are a territory

I'm from Indonesia, and my country probably knows better than most when we're talking about language assimilation. We have like 700 local languages here but we all speak Indonesian aside of our own local languages. Indonesia's policy on the usage of languages is as follows:
1. Prioritize the national language
2. Preserve the local language
3. Conquer the foreign languages
And that has been our way of life for over 70 years since this nation was built.
But English is a foreign language. It is not native to the Americas. It is a European language
@@asiaticglobalism9233 you ignored the 500 other languages we speak 😆 including nahuatl, quechua and Guaraní

USA has more Spanish speakers than Spain, and that’s a true fact.
We have more Mexicans illegally coming to this country and not assimilating. And that's a TRUE fact. Also it's thanks to the Spaniards that south Americans speak Spanish, not the ancient languages of days long gone. And thats a true fact you dumbass liberal.
The roadsigns, menus, schools, names of the states, the declaration of independence, the bill of rights, the language that you are reading and I am typing, yeah that's all English.
The majority of this country speaks English. That's why in America our resturants are named "Little Ceasers" and "Buffalo Wild Wings" *NOT "Pequeños cesares" and "Alas salvajes de búfalo"*
USA has more people of Irish descent than Ireland itself. Same as Melbourne in Australia is the second largest Greek populated city. Makes no difference.

America has hispanic heritage wether you want to accept it or not.
More than half you country used to be Mexico, before that it was New Spain.
And America is the second country in the world with the most spanish speakers. Spanish is in your blood.
@@charlie_zzz6456 You're factually correct about the amount of Spanish speakers. You're also right about the amount of land that was once part of Mexico. But, there's no doubt but that it was The British and their language which made America the great place of business and trade that it soon became. Spanish will never come close to English in terms of importance. But, I agree with you that it is heavily used.

And u clearly didn't hear him good enough cuz he didn't just only say your supposed to speak or learn English but if your in this country it's not an option to him it's a must have meaning u have to speak English and no other language should b accepted or spoken so yes if your having a hard time understanding as usual it is being racist and discriminate and prejudice, not only that but if u truly believe in what ur saying then how bout for now on when u visit another country instead of telling them to speak English how bout u learn their fluent language instead of forcing them to abide by ur rhetorical believes and biased views.
For the record, the US Constitution does not declare any official language.
No, because it's a states rights issue, not a function of the federal government to decide. 32 states have declared English their official language, going on 33 and 34 as we speak.
Still no federal language
