  • So, with our new Government announcing a Defence Review and an increase in Defence spending, what will our future Armed Forces look like. More people, more Regiments, more aircraft more ships?
What about, better wages, better accommodation especially the MQ's, what about a better pension system and crucially what about Veteran care after service? We'll see.....don't hold your breath .

When I joinined the 80,s the pay was poor compared to civilian counterparts in fire service, police etc. But I I didn't join for the money I joined for the adventure adventure which I got. That's was over 30 years ago and from what I hear nothing has improved. I could never understand why they would spend thousands training a soldier yet give him the worst kit and equipment and treat him like shit. I claimed my pension last year turned 60 and I was only in 5 and half years but get enough to get my shopping in for the rest of my life. No wonder young lads don't want to enlist today on piss poor wages when they can get three times more on a building site. Good video Keith with relevant points pertaining to the current state of the military. 😊

Yep I had many mates who joined up female and male it was a way of escaping off the estate and hundrum job you entered the army offered so much I myself joined up and did the initial barb test etc but didn't go through with it due to getting a apprenticeship that I really wanted at the time. People were tougher back in the day even us scally wag kids I remember getting a wet leather football launched at my head at school for example 😂 if you had a issue you had a scrap in the corner of the playground I hated gym those wooden horses give me nightmares even now😂.. different world now

Keith the reason the most veteran's don't claim the small 6/9 year deferred pension is because it stops them getting PENSION CREDIT, which in most cases is worth at least double a small deferred pension. Also, it's taken into account when working out their housing benefit. And council tax. If you claim pension credit, it doesn't affect these state benefits, in fact it helps you get paid more off them. I've just turned 56 and I'm in the AFP75. I've just cashed in a city pension, because I'm not taking any private or company/ forces pension into retirement. It does not pay 99% who claim it. I know, I see the case files on a daily basis. The Tory government said about 11 years ago that they were going to allow the armed forces pensions to be discounted when working out benefits but the police and fire brigade kicked up a shitstorm, especially as they were paying on average 11% off the salary each month towards their pensions for a minimum 30 years. It's a trap. Anyway, can't over. Keep on tabbing.😁

    Defence reviews?
    Here is what happens:
    A defence industry contractor promotes to the MOD a main battle tank that only needs x1 crew member to operate;
Does the MOD think, “Great, we can split current MBT crews and staff x400 of this new tank increasing our fleet to something useful”?
No, they think, “Great, we can cut the overall number of MBT staff by 3/4 and saves £Ms on personnel salaries; pensions;; messing; barracks; MQs; personal eqpt etc.
And give the money saved away to foreign countries or to foreigners in our country.
The only way that the British Armed Forces are going to improve is when enough former serving personnel, particularly ex officers stand as MPs and get elected in sufficient numbers to make a difference across a political party.
I hope that a specific party IS watching your channel Keith!
Keep the vids coming mucker 👍🏻

The lads and girls of our armed forces should always come first, in service, and when there service has ended.. we old soldiers stood to for our land when we were told.. we should be not forgotten when we leave. You speak so much sense. In every review, it always cut manpower and equipment. It was the defence review that led to Argentina invading the Falklands Cameron toured Ark Royal in the middle of an exercise and told the crew the ship was being scrapped, and the Harriers binned The rank never wants to upset the cart as they are chasing their next pip or crown The guys on the ground are never asked Plus woth Crapita taking nearly 2 years to process someone wanting to join It was never like tgat when you popped into the local recruiting centre in toemwn a couple of interviews youvwhere on your way for assessment in a couple of weeks

    • @golfnut6129

I think you’ll find that the war in the Falklands was down to the failing government in Argentina trying to rally nationalism and unite their country behind what was always smouldering embers. The defence review was coincidental and not the cause of the conflict.

Should have kept your powder dry. The wage increase has been put in place. Unfortunately pay and conditions are not the only answer. Societal change, the lack of ‘touch points’ with the military (very few people actually even know someone serving let alone a family member). Todays youth do not necessarily look ahead they live in the ‘now’ , they don’t look at the pension, you need to understand the current target audience. There is plenty of info out there with regards the ‘offer’. Adverts are targeted but not for your age group so you are not meant to ‘get it’. The previous defence review looked at the requirements for the future across the 5 domains, it was never thought that there would be another conflict of this scale on European soil. Work is now being done with regard to reversing some of those previous assumptions, generating mass is now at the forefront of the ‘think tank’ . This more from a NATO Perspective, we are not a rich country and we need to utilise alliances in order to fight in the future (in truth we have always done this). We are a smaller piece of the jigsaw. Yes there needs to be improvement, yes we probably could do with more personnel but if society isn’t interested then it makes it extremely tough to recruit and retain service personnel 🤷🏼‍♂️

Pay was terrible and probably still is. I remember having to stand in the PE Gym for over an Hour listening to the CO tell us about the up coming changes that Soldier 2000 would bring. It never happened when I was still in and I came out in late 2000. I was shocked when I got my first job in Civvy Street. I had more money than I know what to do with. My final years pay worked out to be just over £13,000. The only thing I could boast about my pay, was getting paid to drink beer with my Mates. Couldn't compare wages with them as they all out earned me. When I was on the Foot and Mouth I earnt more in 3 months than I did in a whole year in the Army as a Private. Treated like kids to if you fucked up. Which I did occasionally. For things in Civvy Street you'd not think that much of. In the Army you'd be given ROPS or Fines, yet in the real world you may be given a bollocking and that was it.

When i was in the Lifeguards in the 70's, we had 3 sabre Squadron's and a HQ squadron, in the 90's they formed a Union with The Blues and Royals of 4 sabre Squadron's, now they are down to 3 Squadron's. We had ill and injured soldiers who were kept on strength, I think one had leukaemia, another it looked like some disorder like parkinsons, a Blue and Royal attached to us had his feet run over by a 52 ton tank and permanently wore slippers. It was like a family. We looked after our own.

When I looked into joining the military, the basic pay was pretty average, IMO. Although I didn't take into account being housed and fed for free whilst posted. I did just think I'm gonna be in Afghanistan getting ordered around for minimum wage. At that age, it was a no from me. You are absolutely spot on about them informing potential recruits all the benefits and im definitely sure the housing situation and general state of the bases need alot of updating.

Conscription is a no go! Why don’t they introduce a new organisation to get veterans involved! As a veteran I would happily join an organisation that provides an annual training programme, a bit like a cross between the cadet corps and the ldv. It would provide a body of trained men and women who are already motivated yet possibly too old and unfit to go to the front but can do all those jobs in support!

Just a couple of weeks before the GE the government committed to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence by 2030 in the full knowledge they would be out on their arse and never have to deliver.
It was then disingenuous for that now ousted government to challenge the new incumbents to similarly commit to 2.5% by 2030 who would have to deliver. The previous government spent 14 eviscerating the armed forces, made a meaningless commitment to fix the mess of their making and now expect someone else to sort it.
Just one add on. Any Secretary of State for defence must have served otherwise they do not know their arse from elbow and just listen to permanent secretary’s and civil servants and we have seen where that has led in the past. “Options for Change” was treasury led to make the military fit a budget not commitments. Utter disaster.

My late missus was a nurse all her working life, some mil, mostly civvy, but there was an unspoken and unwritten contract between the health service and the nurses. They put up with shit wages for years but got looked after well when they needed it. I then applied for an HGV course locally in BAOR as the Army Air Corps needed 4 tonner drivers for bowsers & shifting rotor blades & other aircraft spares. If you wanted to drive your own vehicle in Germany you had to apply privately for a BFG (British Forces Germany) license.

It costs about 5 million to train a jet pilot and then they pay about half civilian pilot rate even though it costs more to train new people when they leave than it would to pay them more. Money is wasted on bespoke projects when off the shelf stuff can be just as or nearly as good. Colt M4 is about $1100, much more was spent putting SA80 right. The Warrior upgrade failed , GKN's warrior 2000 prototype with bushmaster and new turret worked and would have been cheaper . Ajax mod of ASCOD was delayed and full of problems when CV90 would have been better with cheaper supply chain, bushmaster cannon cheaper and fully developed . The Tory’s cut 1 Billion from the defence budget this year now Liebore will cut it in real terms even more.
In the 80’s we had around 1000 tanks next year 180 ?
Service accommodation privatised and is worse now than the 1970’s
All the services have been cut to the bone by all governments since the Cold War was deemed finished (looks like it never went away)
Dodgy contracts like buying the well delayed Ajax when the CV90 was available at a cheaper cost - second hand airframes from Chinese airlines for the RAF
The U.K. fails to look after Veterans , if you look at other EU countries veterans have a far better exit package and care. Even the French Foreign Legion have a free Veterans care home and is available to veterans and disabled Legionnaires where they grow grapes and make wine, ceramics and run a cafe for visitors. Such care homes exists in the U.K. but at £1200-1500 a week are unaffordable for many.
When I joined unless you did 12 or 22 years you got no pension, many serving in the 60’s 70’s and into the 80’s did not get a pension if doing 3-11 years.
I believe that they did retroactively backdate it so that all years counted but only backdated it to the 80’s
I am told that now it takes less soldiers to be called a Battalion ! They used to (don’t know if it is still the case) fold into the NATO 2.5% Defence target not just actual military spending but civil servants and military salaries and civil servants pension costs as well.

Not for the first time it's taken me several attempts to post any comment. I won't bore you with everything but it's trial & error to avoid definite algorithms at work. It's lazy editing by CZcams trying to automatically pick up words & phrases which they don't approve of or which match their woke ideas. I was trying to talk about an infestation by roaches in BAOR barracks & it wasn't until I removed the first part of the proper name for the creatures that it was finally allowed. I spell Charlie Oscar Charlie Kilo roaches! Ridiculous! 😠

This is another area that is appalling!
I signed up at the careers office in Portsmouth 15 November 1977. Within weeks I was at the Selection centre at Sutton Coldfield for 3 days and was at Depot REME for basic training 1 December 1977.
I hear from youngsters that 'have tried' to join up and then 'given up' because nearly 12 months later they are still waiting!😱
That's what happens when you get a Civilian company involved in recruitment for the Armed Forces!🤬🤬🤬

Good point ref pensions, I did 5 years regular service in the RAF, (Sorry) and on enquiring I was told that since 18 months of it was in boy's service, no pension! Later in life I did 14.5 years reserve Army service, not pensionable! I was Army barmy and did far more time than required for a reservist. In the USA, their reserve forces do get pensions, our govt is well behind in this. Reminds me of WW1 mentallity, 'They are ALL dead? Right send another company over the top, and get another on standby!'Typical asshole politicians.

Tbh I think pay conditions married quarters etcetera are important. But that is secondary.
The Primary thing defence needs to address is care, housing, mental health for veterans after.
Im in Australia. I hear of Veterans sleeping rough and self ending themselves here, in the UK and in USA.
To me, the core of the Army is a team that's got your back. But as time goes on its not apparent, the care for medical, mental health after is lacking, and its clear the governmebt hasn't got your back. And THAT is where the staff retention issues come from in my opinion.

The government need to make life in the armed forces more tempting for young lads, and especially better life for married men/women in the forces, living accom was shit when I was in but I was only a single young kid from the council estates during Thatchers Britain and I still thought accommodations were bad, so to keep a quality NCO arm they either need to make life in civvy street that hard and that shit that joining up is attractive OR make life in the forces better ? The latter is my favorite lol, but you can't seem to get it through to Westminster there's no point spending billions on shiny new weapons if there's no one in the military qualified to use them, I mean the whole system of purchasing weapons is corrupt, we point our fingers at the Russians calling them corrupt but we need to look closer to home,.

I remember the British Army TV adverts of the 70’s ‘My name’s Bob & I’m a born leader! I get forty pounds a week all found. You can buy thousands & thousands of smarties for forty pounds a week!’ We shared our barracks in BAOR with the roaches. I think the Forces have always been underfunded. The new lot aren’t going to do anything differently just another review to kick it into the long grass again. ☹️

Capita ruined the recruitment process taking over a year to join up 😅. Young people want to be influencers or jobs working from home for much more money. No successive governments will ever bolster the armed forces. They are only interested in privatising things within it to make money for shareholders. They should make the recruitment process much faster.

My journey just starting as a young person in France, I have been assigned The Navy , Training kit is being sent in the post a Bergan Pack, Some T-shirts, Then a local 10km selection hike, I was told dont worry about time its a motivational test and how you support others in your assigned team. Its a 4 year commitment . In France for juniors its 18,687 Euros Rising to Leading rates , depending on trade etc level of Education and English is now included as a trade. French Navy Leading rates can expect to get, between 35,000-42,000 Euros. Plus Bunos when deployed. After the 10km hike If successful I will then have until October to fully fit before the final selection / motivational interview., Did not get Army they have more need for the Navy right now, Merci everyone

@@Jean-MarcBordeaux, yes, under Capita (in charge of recruitment) it’s a long process. Was someone on the radio the other day saying that her son had applied for the Army. He gave all his medical history, had a medical. They then asked him for another medical. After 18 months of his life on hold, they said they are refusing him because of his seizures. He’s never had a seizure in his life, so they must have mixed his records up. Anyway, he’s given up and taken the offer of an apprenticeship.
      Hope you do better. 👍

The Armed Forces will no longer be able to serve or recruit , because the nation is Different now with the Citizen who have no time for the Army and it's methods ...Europe also realize this as well and are training a new military in different methods to try to unhold an army. Here in the Uk the Citizenship has changed and its Services has a more of a need to change its ways...Government .Military etc etc The Future world order is pressing the Nations into changing ...This Nation will end up like North Korea and China or Russia if it doesn't get with the World Program of Change. This Nation will end up Closed to the rest of the World.
