This is exactly what 2005 me thought videogames would be like in the future.

"Always look both ways before jumping between buildings."
I dunno man, Enemy at the gates taught me to just avoid gaps in buildings.
Plot twist: one of the combine Alyx killed was actually Barney Calhoun
Barney is a metrocop. Shes fighting combine soldiers and conscripts. Very different
@@CourierSiix well he is still technically apart of the combine, even though Barney might just be a metrocop
"Hey! Hey Alyx!"

Alyx: fighting her way across the city
Combine: *H E Y A L Y X I T S U S*
2:09 Ahhh F-*AGGRESSIVE CENSORING*
The way that guy die is pretty realistic like actual human movements that it makes me ecstatic for some reason.
combines feel so real now
@@CameronBrownCB something human is always somehow relatable. I know the strider scene and some of their jokes where meant to vent of the tension and as light hearted humor but the metro police gives me some serious Storm trooper "cant take them seriously" vibes now. Most of hl2 metro cop jokes came at the expense of the citizen/ gordon("pick up the can" and so on) reenforcing that they are in power. Now *they* are the joke. I just wished we could have better seen how metro police suppresses the citizen and not just one scene behind a window.
in my eyes it was kind of creepy, it was obvious they were trying to trick them, but hearing them just talk so clearly and friendly even though they were probably planning to either kill them or do even worse makes it way more disturbing.
they always were, there still human, they have emotion when a sopdier dies or they kill another. and when they fall back you can sense their fear. there robot-human but there more human than combine
1:22 Seems adorably in character for Alyx.
aww, when i first saw that i thought alyx did that automatically, didn’t know it was the player doing it so thats rlly cute
God its fucking genius that the combine's suits make a loud beep when they die so they know if some shit is up. Its the little details in this universe that make it feel so vibrant and real
The flatline cuts off their screams of pain, perhaps to improve morale?
@@Stoss_ The combine may not have many emotions, but things still hurt.
@@declanedmison5442 Their memory is erased so they may not scream when they're in pain. Also the flatline represents death since HL1
I love how it actually sounds like their upstairs but isnt just haphazardly muffled. Technology can finally simulate the sound of my parents bitching at each other in the background
Yeah, so many time I have to pause my game to see if the sound coming from the game or real life
@commodore7331 Nobody cares about your parents, shut up and get lost.
Imagine someone, making a mod for this game for the combine to look like the FEAR 1 replica and have their voice lines.
When you consider that Combine Soldiers have had all of their humanity wiped away this becomes much more terrifying. This is a purposeful tactic to try and gain Alyx' trust.
The grunts seem mostly human tho, probably like metrocops with some mods
Half Life Alyx took place BEFORE Half Life 2, not after, so it’s most likely that the Grunts (or all Combine Soldiers in general) still felt human emotions before the events of Half Life 2 and its Episodes where all of the soldiers were made into emotionless killers that can’t feel or express human emotions.
That also explains why the voice of the Grunts are so human-like in HLA compared to the more serious tone of voice in HL2.
Just my guess.
well... zombies voice in reverse says "oh my god, oh god help me!" so not really a way to wipe humanity out... probably
There's a combine pretty early in the game that says, "I'm sorry." after you kill him. Not sure what's up with that.
@@peanutbutter1180 You jest, but that's entirely likely. He's probably apologizing to whatever poor sod he's leaving behind to face the Union's wrath. Alternatively, however, since Combine soldiers are, for all intents and purposes, brainwashed it's entirely possible he'd spent his dying moments overcoming that conditioning in order to try and apologize to the random person he'd just tried to kill.
1:23 *Happiness*
if you turn up the audio you can actually hear them saying what the subtitles say, which means they actually were trying to talk to you. I feel like they were trying to act nice so Alyx would get tricked and walk-in thinking they were allies but then kill her immediately.
They actually do, when you show up after they say this, they'll say something like: "the tactic worked"
They also will say "Friend game effective" if Alyx becomes exposed after they begin to converse with her.
Combine: "Hey Alyx, it's us!"
"We were trying to reach you about your extended car's warrant"
Alyx: Thanks, wait, what's a warra-*sounds of gunshots, a heavy object hitting the ground, and Alyx doing the death rattle*
And i though i was the only one that like to pet the dead combine bodies like they are a cat
The Combine is probably one of my favorite enemies in any game. They seem so human compared to other enemies, which is shown more so in this game than any other.
Combine grunts and (some) metro police and the only combine that are not brainwashed so far.
@@adamchmielewski6162 not brainwashed, but under real-time memory suppression.
@@tenmacinh2152 Not really, there is evidence to suggest that they are basically put through extreme exhaustion and only given “anti-fatigue boosts” to prep them for action.
A much more dark tactic is linked to a line the Overwatch AI says to the grunt that kills you in HL2. Something along the lines of “Family Cohesion Assured”
Cohesion is another term used to say if someone is alive, as the same AI designates dead soldiers as “non-cohesive.”
Basically, the Combine hold the entire families of these grunts as hostage and will kill them if they fail their duties, even if they die. You die as a grunt, your family is going with you.
For all of you saying there's a smudge on the screen. It's in your head.

Being able to do that is what made me dump all my savings on an index
@@CocoaBeans660 If only I didn't have to already dump my savings on a pc that actually works with vr...
The personality you give is astounding. The life-like scavenging, trying to listen through the walls, the victory fists upon disarming the mine, and the "no no" with the Combine... It's fun to watch. :D
Wow thanks that really made my day! I have a new video if you want to watch more 😁
When i was playing this game one of the combine said “Hey Alyx it’s us come here!” I got really creeped out because of that
1:21 that little victory fist pump was really cute
It feels like something link would do after successfully cooking a meal.
"Hey Alyx! Now about that beer I owe ya!"
They’re supposed to be fake-out voicelines, attempting to trick Alyx.
I think theres even lines when you die to these soldiers
Its something like:
“Heheh… fake-friendly is a sucess”
When I first played through this scene, I was genuinely fooled by those guys. I just walked up to them thinking they were allies in disguise or something. I’m kinda dumb.
I wish I could actually play this but I dont have The space for VR- but I know for a fact I’d be fooled by these guys. Now them being combine is quite obvious but I would be convinced that there would be an option of being able To approach them without a weapon and have them demand your surrender or something, valve games are quite impressive and with modern technology in games such as in GTA where you can get a game over by surrendering To The police, it doesnt seem too far fetched that you could have a showdown with The combine trying To detain you
@@schnitzelfritzel6287 You just don't have space for a VR. I JUST DON'T HAVE A FREAKIN' GOOD PC! I'm kinda sad
I was also tricked my first time; I thought they were rebels in disguise because of the emotion in their voice, but one was right next to the door I walked out of and startled me and I shot him fhe face with a shotgun.
I remember when I played this part during my play through hearing the Combine trying to trick me into thinking they were allies was genuinely unsettling. This is still the most immersive video game I’ve ever played in my life. The most immersive form of any media I’ve ever experienced in fact.

I love how, when they die, there's sometimes a short delay before their death sound. It makes their deaths feel slower and less clean.
The VA for Alyx really shines in moments like this. Perfectly expresses the hair raising and stomach dropping feeling of dread and unease when you hear the combine saying her name.
The way her tone just barely falls out of confidence on “name” communicates that feeling so well of getting spooked but knowing you need keep going despite freaking out on the inside
I think they were secretly recording people, and among those lines were Resistance members greeting to each other. They then replay it through their radio to trick the members into their traps.
I like that theory. He sounded very different than how the combine sound most of the time.
Plot twist: the combine just wants to go on a date with Alyx.

Yeah this really blew up! I want to make more videos, but I don't know what to make them on :P
HEY, HEY ALYX! SOMETIMES I LIKE TO CURL UP INTO A BALL, AND PRETEND IM A HUSH PUPPY!
I've heard that the Combine troopers aren't as heavily modifed as they are in 2, so the really tragic idea to me is that it might actually be somebody who knows Alex and wants her to join the Combine because they think it's the safest thing to do. Either Alyx kills him, or he survives and eventually gets sent off to Nova Prospekt to get his guts replaced with Combine Tech, and I think either would be heartbreaking.
That's a nice way of thinking however the combine use this to lure in their target so that thay can get a clean shot
If you get fooled and get close thay say something like : deception tactic worked
If you use OBS, you can set it to not capture your mouse cursor. I think Geforce Experience has a similar setting
Yeah that or I could have just moved the mouse cursor off the screen XD
@@ScorpV1 because it captures the flatscreen mirror feed, not the direct feed that you see in your headset, because that would be all warped.
Something I love about watching no commentary gameplay is picking up on what the player is feeling, whether playing a horror game and a scary noise plays so frantic mouse and screen shaking ensues, or a little fist pump to celebrate finishing a hacking minigame :)

Combine ordinal: Aww *BLEEP*
Yeah that probably was the kill Chat what the combine actually Said was:
Awwww fuck this fucking Camper Always sits in the fucking spawn
I love the way when the last combine soldier dies, the one playing just goes "☝️👋☝️👋☝️🖐👊🖐" 😂😂
i like these combine outfit designs alot more than the vanilla ones we see in half life 2, they add alot more detail into their roles in the combine army and their gear shows how well prepared they are to handle the situation at hand.
They phased them out because a copy and paste spam soldier with no emotions is more efficient than an army of many different classes with gear
Fun fact: when a combine unit dies or mc unit their suits tend to beep which alerts other combine to their location, setting them on fire seems to stop these beeps.
“Hey Alyx, you’re going to need a gun, don’t worry it’s unloaded!”
*empties mag into alyx chest*
“It’s unloaded now!”
When I heard they where saying her name it really spooked me for some reason
“Alyx, it’s me Barney from Black Mesa!”

Combine: **takes over the world in 7 hours**
Also combine: *can't stop 2 people from destroying everything*
To be fare to us human kind. Portals storms prior combine show up make demadge to erth infrastructure. So it became easy picking for combine
Well if you remove the plot armor from the 2 people, it's pretty much a GG for humanity
Combine used different units when they occupied Earth. These soldiers you see are just the garrison of Earth. They are mostly regular humans who wants to live in better conditions and eventually end up joining the Combine. So basically if the Combine could open that portal and bring their occupation forces on the planet again, we would be fucked.
2:15 :)
Combine Metro Police (CPs) are fully human who joined the Combine either willingly or out of despiration to get better treatment.
The Combike Grunts (the bois in full white suits) seem to also be fully human or just very lightly altered weither ir be by augmentations or memory-wipe. But they are either not augmentet at all like CPs are very little augmentations.
Soldiers and above though have augmentations amd memory-wipes.
Which make this do interesting, sad and a bit creepy.
This game seriously has to be the most immersive VR game out there holy shi-
love the little victory bump after the mine disarm ll
I have purposely avoided watching anything of this game so I can play it fresh when I eventually have a system to run it. That said, the sound design here is nuts. I didnt know it was THIS good :0
Dunno why, but your hand gestures are cute af
its beautiful, I have alrrady rewatched it for 10 times
This was one of the creepiest moments I've ever experienced in a videogame. Shit was unreal in VR
It reminds me of that meme where a combine soldier says hi, and Gordon blows his head with a shotgun shot
When this first happened I didn’t really process it and never ended up thinking about it later. Looking back, that’s pretty creepy
Being a loyal fan of the Half Life franchise since 1998 I felt so let down when Alyx came out in VR only. It's such an amazing game. I can't use VR. I get so sick every time I try, and let me tell you, I tried for days and days and weeks. A few mins here, a few mins there and working my way into longer time durations. Couldn't do it. I had to give up. It was starting to cause issues with my vision. I know times change, and I understand and embrace all of that, but I wasn't able to use VR in any capacity. Alyx is a masterpiece and one I can only enjoy vicariously thru other players.
So thank you Andromeda, and other players like yourself. I am on my way out of life now and may never see Half Life 3, so this is the best I can do until I am taken back home to Xen.
Regards.
Wow I am so sorry to hear all that. Seriously. I don't know why this video blew up, but it is a treat to read every single one of these comments and a lot of people feel the same. Many many people can't play this game, whether it is cost, nausea, or what have you. Hopefully half life 3 comes out soon, and though I loved the vr experience I hope it is in a on a "medium" in which everyone gets to play.
You're not alone man! I would love to play this thing in VR, but i can't justify spending so much money just for one game. Besides, i've never even tried VR ever in my life, maybe i'll get dizzy too and won't even be able to play it, i don't know. I think Valve should have released a non-vr version as well, it's a shame. It wouldn't be the same thing though, but HL2 has a VR option, so i guess it would have been possible... oh well :(
for that little no no no to the combine at the end you get a like
Markiplier: 2:17
"As you can see, he is making fun of people who are blind."
i love that part where you slap the ordinal
Reminds me of Mars Attacks when the Martians were destroying everything while their P.A system was saying "don't run. We are your friends" repeatedly.
I like how the Combine are more human because the augmentation wasn't as perfected as the one in Half-Life 2, letting them keep some humanity.
Been getting back into Half-Life and I really want to get a vr headset just for this game.
Wow, same. I saved up for an Oculus Quest for the game, only to realize my computer wasn't compatible with the Oculus Link (plus, the one I got kinda sucked.) I'll soon be able to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME, I'm so excited.
I'm still waiting for a Half-Life game where human combine might actually attempt to surrender when in a losing battle or even defect to the player if the player just has the patience to pay attention to their radio chatter. Perhaps not at all appropriate for this part of the timeline but anytime after the destruction of the C17 citadel I could imagine Metro security personnel trying to get out of a shitty situation.
@@CocoaBeans660 I think this is the kind of thing Valve should have a serious look at for whatever comes next with Half-Life, to look at making the AI seem more alive and aware rather than just having a fire fight always end in one of two sides being wiped out. Those words are thrown around all the time but I have never seen it implemented in a believable way.
Anyway I'm just wondering, are the Combine lines and reactions in this video predefined or is this a trick they can pull out of the hat on any run in?
Could see that happening with the metro police, but higher rankings get their memory wiped and are probably totally brain washed (and possibly augmented to be fearless).
You get a subscription just for the "Nuh uh uh" wave and slap at the end.
