  • Hey guys, welcome to Part 3 of the Ohsweken Project. For those of you who don’t already know, we’ve been hired to do a Shou Sugi Ban siding for the ADC Sault Ste Marie building in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. In this episode I’ll be showing you a sneak peak look inside our new (well, new to us) Weinig Profimat 26 Super and the knives we’ve ordered for it.
TIP: Shou Sugi Ban is the Japanese art of preserving and finishing wood using fire!
It's not every day that you get to see one of these bad boys, so it’s pretty neat to have this kind of work being done here at Legacy Lumber.
(I’ll be making a full length/more in depth video once we get the machine up and running!)

This is very similar to a machine my uncle had in Iron River Michigan. Much more primitive. It was probably pre war. I spent many hours in the shop as a kid catching boards. He could do paneling or just 4 straight sides. He would spend all day weighing the blades to get them balanced just right. You could take your lumber to him, then 5-6 years later get back a finished product. He was not what you call fast. Slow and steady. But he still managed to put out a lot of lumber.

Those molder heads looked deadly!! lol
What rpm do they spin at, once you put them to work?
I'm surprised they didn't make you a backup set of shaper blades, in case of a crash...
10,000 + ft for that one job... That's a lot of labor, feeding that beast and then keeping the shaped boards pulled off of it. :-)
    Fascinating stuff!!

The Tools are normaly on 6000rpm from on this machine. With hsk spindle locking you can have 12000 RPM as an option from Weinig.

So no jointing on a 6" wedgebed jointer, planing with a dewalt lunchbox planer, and routing on a homemade router table like me? HAHA. I can't believe you just throw rough lumber in and out comes a perfect piece of "moulded" wood. Almost too easy! lol. Those cutterheads look scary $$$$

I know right, I have been there done it every other way possible not for 10,000 sqfeet but still lot's of wood the traditional way. This is crazy that I have this machine in my shop, so exciting!! Thanks for watching.

Sir, would you be in a position to disclose me the make/brand of those cutter heads? Are those Byrd cutter heads?
