during the showing that i went to, when jared said "kinky," they stopped for at least a minute because he fell to the floor laughing.
They later changed it to “hot” in the performances because he always laughed too hard

These two were never friends, in fact they only met once and it ended quickly, Connor killed himself the night after the two first encountered each other and their relationship never progressed. Evan is writing these letters because the note he wrote to himself was found on Connor's body (there is a lot of context needed) and they assumed they were friends. Evan ends up caught in this web of lies and doesn't want to crush Connor's family that he died friendless

I've read the book all the way through. Twice. He died of an overdose. When it says he crashed the car it wasn't talking about how he died, it's talking about how he lost the car his dad "handed to him like an olive branch." It wasn't a car crash, it was an overdose. And the whole "falling from the tree" thing being a suicide attempt is not at all exclusive to the book. They make it very clear in the actual production. "Did you fall? Or did you let go?"
Actually, in the movie, Evan admitted to his mom that he let go from the tree.

**SPOILERS**
This is kinda hard to explain but okay. So... Evan (the one that's writing the emails with Jared) has never been actually friends with Connor.
So, Evan has been writing letters to himself starting with "Dear Evan Hansen... From your dearest friend, me" because his therapist said it would help him.
Evan breaks his arm and his mom says he should go around school asking people to sign his cast. Nobody does, because he doesn't have any actual friends. Then he has a horrible encounter with Connor Murphy where Connor shoves him. The next day, Connor feels bad so he signs Evan's cast, saying "Now we can both pretend we have friends". That same day, Connor takes the letter Evan wrote to himself because it mentioned his sister.
What happens next is, Connor kills himself.
Evan's letter to himself is found in Connor's pants when he died so now Connor's parents just assume the two of them were friends. Just so you know, both Connor and Evan have never had any "friends". Plus, they also saw Connor's name written on his cast, so that didn't help. So now Evan is stuck in this big lie where he feels like if he tells Connor's family the truth, he might take the only think that they have (the believe that Connor actually had a friend). And in a dinner with his family he ends up saying that they used to write emails to each other, so Jared and him start writing these fake emails between them in which Evan was trying to help Connor and they actually had a friendship. But since Connor is not alive and this is just Evan imitating what he thinks Connor was like, it's kinda depressing.
