You’re wrong though because he was a rapper first and then the tv show. His rap career is what got him the show.
Some how people get this wrong often. Just like calling R&B artist rappers. When I see that I am like are they doing this on purpose or are they just totally ignoring the art form.

Will Smith was rapping way b4 he took up acting. His 1st album was in 1988. He went on tour with public enemy, beastie boys LL cool J among others. He was actually the first rapper to win a Grammy. His last album was actually in 2005. He actually was doing both.

fresh prince was the biggest artist in hip hop back in loke 86/87, he got the show because of how big he was in the 80s...it resurrected his career...his popularity dropped when the music went from partying and having fun, to being gangsta

In terms of music Will Smith is a marketing genius never selling and album under gold status and has one of the highest selling albums in HipHop history in 1997🤷🏾♂️ arguably hiphop peak
He did both movies and music back when they released soundtrack albums…see MIB & Wild, Wild West.
Because he's a clean rapper, Will gets overlooked as a great rapper/MC, but most of his songs back in the day told stories and stuck to themes. He's a great old school style, house party or block party rapper. Jeff, outside the world of turntablism fans, gets overlooked as being a fucking awesome DJ.
Definitely one of the best, if not the best storyteller in the history of Hip Hop. WAY too many people slept on Prince.
Jazz and Prince had the comedic rap on lock, but the one song that still bangs is "Summertime"!!!!

I think the thing with Will putting the music aside had a lot to do with how rap music changed. When gangster rap became popular, Will wanted nothing to do with it. It wasn't his style. The acting took off at the same time, so his path forward was pretty clear.

So this album and a couple of the others were out before the show was out. He mostly got grief for being relatively clean at the same time bands like NWA were hitting the scene, and all of rap generally moved in a harder direction. For me I loved the first 4 albums immensely, and I could recite most of the songs on each.
If you'd like a good example of how good he can really rap do a song called He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper, it was the title track from the album with Parents Just Don't Understand among others. It is, I think an amazing example of the fact that he can rap his ass off. Of course having one of the greatest DJ's to spin doesnt hurt.

Will Smith was one of the few rappers who didn't use profanity in his songs which is amazing because he made fun of the situation. How many times have and a few friends would get together and watch football and you start saying that you could do a whole lot better than the wide receiver or the running back.
