    Great Howard. I enjoyed that. Your set up is pretty close to mine off and on. I dont have the distortion but I will now! Great sound!

    Excellent Howard !
    It would seem that for a more or less " natural " sound , as used for bluegrass , bluegrass- ish , or traditional country what's actually essential is a touch of reverb , maybe touch of reverb with hint of subtle delay . And for bluegrass / traditional country you would probably have those basic " quack removers " on all the time instead of switching in and out for effect .
    Many amps will have a reverb feature that is reasonably acceptable at mild settings . Many accoustic amps will have a Line Out . You're probably already going to have an amp for practice , or playing out in settings that aren't wired for full bore house sound systems .
    So is there any overwhelming reason you couldn't start out JD box into amp ( and further to line out if applicable ) , that you couldn't skip the pedal board and just use the amp features , at least initially to spread out the finiancial rabbit hole start up costs ?

      As I mentioned in the video..It all depends on your performance requirements. I'll play larger venues where stage amps are not permitted so the effects must be inline.
      In most other gigs, even with a stage amp used as a monitor I have to provide "front of house" with a different feed.
      In cases where I can use a stage amp for everything the amp is positioned to the rear and not easily accessible so all of the choices are at my feed where I can make adjustments for every tune.
      Costs are certainly a factor but when I'm hired to play I must abide by the gig requirements. The assumption is that I have the proper gear for the gig!
      So...bottom line. "It all depends" ;-)

      Sorry for the long winded reply. Another short answer is that guitar/Fishman==>Aura==>amp may be perfectly adequate for you.

    Thanks soo much for this Howard! this is great coverage of one of the hardest , for many, aspects of dobro. Well done. I've followed your experience for years, since back in the days of email lists. Still playing my "88 Reed that Jerry helped arrange for me to purchase after the Haystack Workshop in Cannon Beach, Or in '88. Playing that via an RLBaggs DI, various pedals, out to a pre-Fender California Blonde acoustic amp. probably the most fav pedal is an Origins compressor. Nice to see you picking and sharing. You are and have been a great curator of dobro information!

    Very nice video and great explanation of your setup, Mr. Parker. I do have a couple of questions. Does the Fishman Aura pedal work with any other pickup, or does it require the Nashville pickup exclusively? And I presume the Aura pedal contains digital images or samples of someone (JD?) playing an instrument through various types of mics?

      Hi Patrick! Thanks for watching. After a LOT of experimentation I've concluded that that only way to get all the benefits of the pedal is to mate it it to the Fishman "Nashville" pickup. The pedal basically gives you the "essence" of the acoustic reso that the piezo strips away. It's a dramatic difference.
      The pedal/pickup combo has proven itself for about 8 years now. The only box more flexible is the Tonedexter which is more $$$ and requires a studio quality mic for the user to create their own "images".
      Hope this helps.

    I dont know if you keep track of comments or not but if you do where do you get parts for resonator guitars . i have an old square neck (mahogany) flint hill spider bridge guitar and i need a cover for 1 side it resesembles a small speaker or microphone cover. i cant find one anywhere lol

      Resophonic Outfitters/Beard Guitars for parts (and guitars). That's probably a "sound hole screen" , as far as I can tell. Not a critical part.

    This video is full of useful information. I play an E model that I absolutely love but at this point Im pretty unhappy with how it sounds through our sound system so I am trying to figure out how to make it better. I go from the dobro -> LR Baggs Venue then out the FX send on the LR Baggs to my AURA pedal -> Overdrive pedal -> Delay pedal then back to LR Baggs FX return and then finally to the sound board. It just doesn't sound like an acoustic dobro at all at this point as you can hear in this video czcams.com/video/0lIrczpz8Xo/video.html . Any advice? maybe it would be better to go to AURA first, then my other FX pedals and finish with the LR Baggs venue?

      The Aura is designed to be first in your signal chain! I personally rarely use overdrive on dobro and given the choice, would use reverb instead of delay in most cases. I may have an op to respond further after listen to the link a bit later.
      I also put my Fishman DI/eq at the very end of the signal chain.
      What kind of music are you playing?

    • @dcsteelman
      @dcsteelman  Před 2 lety

      Watched the vid and it sounds like a LOT of overdrive. Not my fav approach in my music.

    • @DylanRobert1
      @DylanRobert1 Před 2 lety

      I definitely use the overdrive WAY more than I want to at this point because my dobro’s clean sound just doesn’t sound like a dobro and it drives me crazy. But I will try to put the aura first in line and blend at 100% and tinker with that to see how it sounds 🤞

      @@DylanRobert1 Also check any eq adjustments on the Baggs...I typically would let the sound dude tweak at the board and leave the Baggs eq for emergencies...like feedback. The reasoning is that while on stage you don't have an accurate sense of what the front of house sounds like. So if you eq AND the sound dude eqs you're asking for a problem ;-)
      Good luck. Lemme know how it turns out.
