The late comedian Red Skelton shares his prophetic views of the American pledge of allegiance to the flag, recorded some 40 years ago in 1969, on his CBS television series "The Red Skelton Show".
Here is my favorite quote by Red Skelton during an extensive and in-depth interview at Clemson University: "I can't sit back and fold my hands and think about the past, for there are thousands of yesterdays but only one today and ... maybe a tomorrow." (Red Skelton 1981)
I got to see him before he passed away and I couldn't help but to laugh with him.. HE IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A CLASS ACT.... I would go see him forever .... Love this wonderful man
THIS MAN!.....is the epitome of....THE AMERICAN DREAM!!.....HUMBLE....HARD WORKING.....SOLID AND FAITHFUL TO THIS GREATEST OF ALL COUNTRIES WE CALL....AMERICA!!.....HE WAS AN AMAZING PERSON!.....I SURE WISH HE WAS AROUND NOW!!
Red Skeleton's patriotism brings tears to my eyes because it is so heartfelt and true. God bless Old Glory and the freedom she represents may she never die. I pray that my grandkids, when I have some, can say this pledge in 2076 and it still mean what it truly means...liberty and justice for all! I remember when 9/11 happened and I was a boy and we all went outside at my elementary school and the principal led a prayer to God to protect our country from evil is what he said. All of us were scared to death, we had tears in our eyes and we sung songs about America, all of them with God in it, and we recited the Pledge of Allegiance. I never forgot that day and I hope that in the future, my children can say God's name in school and pray to Him and also say our pledge to our great country!
Paul-Octave Hébert Im sorry Paul but try that now in schools and youll get fired or worse. And its wrong because what you said is the WAY IT SHOULD BE!!
January 1969...My senior year in High School. Our family watched and loved the Red Skelton Show. I went to a one room school house where we rang the bell and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Sad to see how our Country has become divided....
Have always admired "Red Skelton" A pity we do not have people like him anymore. What a joy it was to watch him. Never vulgar, yet always had us laughing. The whole family could watch him, as he never used foul or vulgar language. What a great loss!! A true AMERICAN!! R.I.P.
We had great comedians back on Red Skelton's day. They could have you literally rolling on the ground laughing, and no profanity and sexual undertones were used or necessary, Best sitcom was the Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleason and a great cast.
They should play this at all meetings in this country that have anything to do with education and whether or not our Pledge of Allegiance should still be required because it now includes the word "God"! Who the heck thought Red Skelton could foresee the future so well. Love you Red! You are missed!
When I was a child I remember my father telling me about meeting Red Skelton on a troop train following WW II. He recalled how the train was in an uproar, everybody laughing the entire trip, thanks to Red Skelton's great humor.
So did I, but I was only 7 and didn't fully understand what was he was doing. Looking back, I wish my teachers had used this segment to explain the pledge's meaning.
I first heard/ watched this as a senior in high school (1969). At that point, our family had already been watching 'Red' for years. As German immigrants (1957) this wonderful man did / said more as an entertainer in the most humble yet instructively /loving way about what it means to be or become an American than any ANY 5 Presidents put together!
Wish this was required teaching in schools, teaching the meaning behind the words. On a personal note, this should be broadcasted on the jumbotrons at the football games.
This is the BEST explanation for the" Pledge of Allegiance" that I have EVER Heard. We should always Remember these poetic words....and should always include "under GOD" with Pride....Amen!
So powerful. It touched my heart. I am committing this to memory and have my future grandchildren do so also. I love my country. Although we have issues, I still feel this is the greatest country on earth.
The pledge was originally an ad campaign for a company selling flags. The jingle was so popular that it was made into the pledge...still gives my chills down my spine today! Beautiful, Red, thank you!
You had to love Red Skelton, I know I did, and still do. I'm 82 now and from the real America. What a sad difference from then and this screwed up mess we have today! Breaks my heart. Jerry G. Omegaman
Isn't it amazing how wonderful it sounds when explained like this. And it should be a prayer even if it isn't. This country needs all the prayers it can get.
My six year old grand daughter began reciting the Pledge on the way to school last Fall but mainly was just repeating phonetically so that evening we sat down and I explained it line by line explaining what the bigger words meant. It shouldn't be just an exercise done at the beginning of school or various meetings, it should be understood so that it can become real and meaningful to the reciter. Do what I did and light their passion for knowledge beginning with the Pledge and at some point the Preamble to our Constitution which still gives me goose bumps at 62.
Mind if I try? -We (a group of people) -the People of the United States (businessmen, politicians, religious figures, civilians) -in Order to form a more perfect Union (in order to form a better country with unity) -establish Justice (establish laws in which people are treated fairly in matters of law) -ensure domestic Tranquility (ensure that we are at peace), -provide for the common defence (provide so that everyone can be protected), -promote the general Welfare (promote opportunity to those who reside here) -and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity (to secure freedom and peace of mind), -do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America (do establish this paper for the people of this nation).
God bless Red Skelton. I wish America had listened to people like him. We, as a nation, have pulled so far away from God. It's no wonder that we are in the mess that we're in today. If we had remained One Nation Under God, we truly would be indivisible. Instead we have become Sodom and Gomorrah and it frightens me to think about the future of America. Our land needs prayers now more than ever. We need our Christian values that our founding fathers relied upon.
When I attended middle school from Sep. 1984 to May 1987, I recited the unabridged version: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with lbierty and justice for all." Back then, even though Ididn't consider or treat the Pledge to be a prayer, each school week started out with the students reciting the unabriged Pledge in our home rooms on Monday morning, followed by "The Star-Spangled Banner". Red mentioned "One nation, so blessed by God", and "Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the pledge: 'under God.' " "So blessed by God" may be a reference to "Annuit Coeptus: He (God) has blessed our undertakings", found on the reverse of the Great Seal, which can be found on the back of a $1 bill, opposite the eagle with the olive branch, talons, etc. All of the states, except for Hawaii, Iowa, Oklahoma, Vermont, and Wyoming, allow time for the pledge to be recited as part of the school day. Although 45 states give time for the pledge, it is still at the discretion of the local school board and/or the individual teacher. www.takepart.com/photos/these-five-states-do-not-require-pledge-allegiance-schools/the-new-pledge-of-allegiance-requirements-for-nebraska
Was stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital in 1969, and was at the 4th of July Celebration at Independence Hall and he did his presentation, something that I will always remember.
Those were the days. Now it should read more like this... " I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Lobbyists and Corporations for which it stands, one Nation under Greed, split down the middle, with liberty and justice for all who can afford it. "
It brings tears when you think how things have changed. "Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said that is a prayer, and it would be eliminated from schools too?"
I rmember watching this show ever week. And the most memorable is this clip and one other where Clem visted Washington DC. I have never seen the Washing DC one again But it warms my heart every time I think about it .
This is without a doubt, one of the many reasons why Red Skelton was an exceptional man and a humble entertainer because he acknowledged the Importance of our "Pledge of Allegiance" in our country, The United States of America, but one fight that Red Skelton was not able to prevent, was the removal of prayers in our schools, and all you have to do is to look at the huge mess that our public schools have become these days- mass shootings, Gay and Transgender tolerance, drag queens being allowed to read fairy tales to children, the fight over CRT, and now, the weaponizing of The NEA by Biden's inept policies, searching for "domestic terrorists"- what a joke! Now, liberals have undermined our nation's greatness, and if Red Skelton saw the mess that America is in today, he would be angry and heartbroken! Red Skelton later became a victim of CBS's de-rualization process after CBS says that his show was suffering ratings loss that resulted in NBC picking up his series in 1971. He was even a business partner with Irwin Allen's "LOST IN SPACE" series on CBS in 1965-68 through his Van Bernard Productions company, but, above all, Red Skelton was a true American who never forgot where he came from! God Bless Him!!
Red Skelton is awesome as the clown Prince as the man who can give the world a laugh and you don't have to have cuss words in it God bless Red Skelton and God bless brother Brian Hoffman in pigeon forge Tennessee
Met Red many times when he performed in Hamilton Ontario, he stayed in the Skyline hotel in toronto and treated everyone respectfully. I own one of his many clown paintings purchased in his Honolulu gallery. He was a True Gentleman. Not many around these days
One problem. This had to be recorded before 1969 because in 1969 the U.S. had 50 states, not 48 as Red states. I loved this man. Watched him every week. And the sound of his voice always takes me back to that time in life.
Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to Union in 1959. A forty-ninth star was added on the fourth of July for Alaska. Our family was on a day trip that day from NJ to NYC. We got to see the new 49 star flag flying from the George Washington Bridge when crossing into New York. Hawaii was admitted after the fourth that year, so a 50th star wasn't added until July 4, 1960. I wonder if there are any 49 star flags around now, since it was only in use for one year.
Red Skelton came from a time when comedians entertained with whit and clever humor. In those days they didn't have to use vulgar language and sex to make people laugh. Red was a class act and simply loved to entertain in a respectful manner seldom seen today.
I saw this live.. our generation have a different ideal than today.. Hollywood and the media is not like it was when I was young.. this is very sad.. but I fought and bled for your right......... to be wrong.
The music playing behind the explanation of the pledge is The Ballad of Rodger Young, a World War II ballad celebrating the patriotism of an American Infantry soldier, Rodger Young. You can look it up on CZcams.
I agree with everything Red said EXCEPT his comment about "under God". I was in the 5th grade in 1954 when those 2 words were added to the Pledge, and even then I felt it was wrong because I already knew what the First Amendment said. The Cold War was prominent and now-discredited McCarthyism (please look it up in Wikipedia) was rampant. Since Communism was "godless", those words were inserted into the Pledge, and the words "In God We Trust" were added to U.S. money, violating the 1st Amendment
2 of 2 Additionally, anyone that argues prayer belongs in school - beyond the above - must then recognize all other religious prayer and beliefs. This must then include all religions, not just Judeo/Christian beliefs, but also Muslim, Hindu, Buddhism, Wicca, Shinto, Jainism, Cheondoism, Tenrikyo, Zoroastrianism, Scientology, ad infinitum. And that would still exclude the beliefs of atheists, who are entitled to the same inclusion.

While I was in class, one of the leaders asked us to watch this, im glad I did. God bless America
HE WAS THE "REAL DEAL"!.....WISH WE HAD A HUNDRED MILLION LIKE HIM NOW!!
Mr. Skeleton, that was beautiful. I hope people listen to your speech. Listen. It is warm and uplifting. Share and Share. God Bless America.
This is simply AMAZING. If you're an American and you disliked this video. Shame on you!
If they didn’t like it, are they American? Or just AINOs, (American In Name Only)!

@@roderickrayrutledge2740 Probably so.
I'm so glad to be old enough to have been able to enjoy him on television in the 1960's. Boy, I miss his style of entertainment.

good hell he was a great man
I was lucky enough to be watching the night this was broadcast the first time

Originally, Under God was NOT part of the pledge, and considering the melting pot of religions in this country currently, shouldn’t be in it.
So powerful. It touched my heart. I am committing this to memory and have my future grandchildren do so also. I love my country. Although we have issues, I still feel this is the greatest country on earth.
Best rendition of The Pledge I’ve ever seen
Love this . Best explanation on our pledge of allegiance.
Damn goosebumps head to toe . amazed he knew then what would happen now .
Yes sir it is a pity
On January 14, 1969, Red Skelton touched the hearts of millions of Americans with ... Red Skelton's recitation of the "Pledge of Allegiance"
The pledge was originally an ad campaign for a company selling flags. The jingle was so popular that it was made into the pledge...still gives my chills down my spine today! Beautiful, Red, thank you!

This needs to be mandatory on the first day of school- every grade, every where.
Thank God! When I was a child in school over 75 years ago, it was, and we knew what sex we were, and we were NOT ashamed.

Red a real American shame we don,t have more today

This should be televise so everyone can see an
I loved this wonderful patriot. I am blessed to have grown up with The Master.
Most schools do not start the day with this pledge. A sad time for such a great country. Remember tomorrow what it ALL means.
I can't remember when Red Skelton passed away, but I'm glad he's not here to see what America has become now. Loved him back then and love him today!
You can hate the management, elected officials, but love this country for it is truly a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world.

DJRev StJohn But then again, he's quoting his teacher, Mr. Lasswell, who would have said this before 1959 (when Alaska and Hawaii were added.)
DJRev StJohn You will note that at the end he acknowledges the additional 2 States and the addition of the words "Under G-d."
Alaska and Hawaii were admitted to Union in 1959. A forty-ninth star was added on the fourth of July for Alaska. Our family was on a day trip that day from NJ to NYC. Nice reminder... It connects the entire country to the idea of unity to the idea many into one purpose. The American Experiment

At 2:20 he nails it... to bad it falls on deaf ears. Oh look, a squirrel...
he said "48 states", which means this was made before 1959. wait i just got to the end, and he said there were two more states added since then. nevermind.
He didn't put in the phrase "under God" though. Louis a Bowman did that. So the version we say now is different than the original.
