  • It's been a week friends, I have struggled to find painting inspiration and have been feeling flat. I have also been defragging the room of hoard as well as my office (filming room) and noticed a pile of stuff I want to review. These pencils were at the top of the pile. Brutfuner has come out with a 72-pencil set with an additional 22 colors to the 50 set I reviewed here: • Why pay $157 When you ... I really like this set, so much that I bought a backup 50 set before I knew the 72 set was coming out. *Please refer to that review for an in-depth look at the Brutfuner Macaron colors. I will also compare these to the new Kalor pastel pencils.
    We will also look at the Brutfuner 50 metallic set and compare them to the metallic pencils in the Brutfuner 520 set I reviewed here: • NEW! Brutfuner 520 Col...
    The new brutfuner metallics were softer and more opaque than the ones in the 520 set but only slightly. I also compared them to the Derwent Metallic pencils which are the best in my opinion for shine and coverage but they are markedly more expensive.
    The 50 Brutfuner metallics and 72 macaron pencils were sent to me by Ansdtal Stationary shop on aliexpress. They arrived well-packaged and fairly quickly considering that these were sent overseas. they are made in China.
    72 Macaron pencils: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680... *Other size packs available but the 72 set was $23 at time of posting, it's a steal!
    50 Brutfuner Metallics: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...
    I purchased the 50 Kalor pencils because I wondered how they compared and I thought the art on the tin was beautiful: amzn.to/3GmOLfc
    *I swatched out the Kalor pencils and then compared to the Brutfuner 40 set and most of the color names were different but 49 colors were perfect matches. Brufuner had one more pink and the Kalor had an extra green.
    And before I knew the 72 set was coming I bought a backup of the 50 set because I need my head examined: amzn.to/3Cti4vE *Hey, i just saw this seller has the 72 set as well!
    These are the Derwent metallics: shrsl.com/3va68 *they have the best quality but they are much more expensive so you can decide if they are worth it. Also, it is a smaller range of colors.

    I have to say: that many pencils of similar colors would drive me crazy. But, it's a short trip.🤪 I needed a few supplies from Jerry's so I got a 24 set of Cezanne colored pencils to try out. The order is in the mail. Finally Mimariblu potters pink was in stock so I treated myself. Also some of the Canson sand grain mixed media paper. Should arrive in a couple days. Thanks Lindsay. Chin up dear girl. The slump can't last forever. Is it spring yet?😉💜

    I think the pastel pencils are beautiful, but, I’m glad they don’t really tempt me enough to place an order. For Christmas, I received a 120-polychromos set and a set of 12 pastel pencils and I feel that my pencil needs are more than covered. I’m not into metallics at all. I love seeing them all displayed together and on somebody else’s desk though lol.

  • @waymire01

    I adore my brut macarons, if they would come out with a full spectrum set of those pencils I would buy it today. They are not the same as any of the other bruts unfortunately. I mixed mine with my polychromos and they get along like best friends. I will totally buy the expanded set if I need a new batch, but I don't want the extra colors bad enough to do it now. The only other pastels I own are castlearts pasteltint (which do look a lot in pencil style to the metallic set you have here, probably the ones you are thinking of, with the capped ends and white bands). Those moved in with my arteza expert. I use the pastels a lot more in conjunction with the other colors and both sets benefited from the lighter shades as neither is strong in that area. It was a real job sorting them all by color family and recharting them but worth it.

      @@MissEddieBlueKawaiiKrafts That's good to know. I wish I had watched this video before I ordered. I couldn't find the 72 set, I kept typing it in search and it wouldn't show up. I ended up getting the 50 set and the 80 set, the 80's didn't look quite right.They were a low enough cost that I'm keeping them. Then I found the 72 macaron square pencils with the Indra label and assumed that was what people were talking about... sigh, I might return them when they get here IDK.

    The Macaron pencils really are good. I was always extremely against buying budget pencils, but seeing constant use of Brutfuners in videos, with great results, I thought that ok, I'll just try them. I first bought the set of 24 and then the set of 50. 😅 I actually liked them so much that I also tried the normal round Brutfuners and the square ones. I think the Macaron ones absolutely have the best formulation, but I also like the square ones, and I actually even find the round ones to be quite okay for what they cost. Brutfuner made it on my list of acceptable budget brands. ☺ And I find that the Macaron ones work really well in combination with both Polychromos and Prismacolor, and also with Colorsoft. They actually feel a lot like Colorsoft to me. Such a nice formulation, I wish they would release a set of regular colors like that.

    • @foreseengust
      @foreseengust Před rokem +2

      @thefrugalcrafter Please do a comparison of these with the castle arts Pasteltint. I'm wondering if it's actually better than the cheaper ones because the Pasteltint is relatively expensive. I got it thinking it's the best performing pencils next to the Holbein. Now I'm wondering if Brutfuner is actually better.

    • @MissEddieBlueKawaiiKrafts
      @MissEddieBlueKawaiiKrafts Před rokem +4

      @@foreseengustI prefer the Brutfuner & Kalour to the pastel tint but I prefer a softer pencil, the pastel tint have a harder core. People who like to spend a lot of time layering would probably like the pastel tint. I also have the 50 & the new 72 Brutfuner macaron pastel set, it turns out the 72 set comes with over 40 new colours! Also the 50 set has colours that don’t come in the 72 set, I was so surprised!! So for anyone who already has the 50 & was debating I say definitely get the 72 set too! 🙈
      To be honest I haven’t reached for the pastel tint since I swatched them, I find they aren’t as easy to blend cuz of the harder lead.. but for a talented artist whose great at layering & has the patience of saint that might not be a problem. The one thing is they are definitely different colours than the Brutfuner & Holbein whereas Kalour is exact dupe of the 2. The only thing kalour has on Brutfuner is the tin, if you don’t have any of the 3 I’d definitely suggest the Brutfuner 72 & the even the Kalour to go with 😋 unless you prefer a harder pencil in which case you might prefer the pastel tint. Bahhh that was a novel but I hope it helps! Planning to upload a full swatch & compare, it took me HOURS!!! 🙈🎨💘😋🦋🍭

      @MissEddieBlueKawaiiKrafts Thanks for such an informative reply. I don't really need so many different sets, one would be enough. Sound like Brutfuner might be the way to go. I really hate crumbs, that's why I bought the Pasteltint, but they do get crumbs and they feel waxy without being opaque. They somehow have all of the qualities of a cheap pencil, without being cheap. Thanks again.

    Hullo Lindsay, I watch “Amie Howard Art’s” channel and she truly loves her Holbein pastel and regular pencils! She creates amazing color pencil artworks! I know that permanence is very important to color pencil artists. I know that most people are scanning or taking photos of their artworks for reproduction. I have purchased the 50 macron pencils for my wife’s coloring books and if I am so moved I could pick them up without reservations. I do enjoy watching your videos and seeing how you work with the different but same pencils! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

    These look beautiful, thanks for your review. I got the 120 Brutfrunner set last year after your review. My first large set. I like them and at the same time get overwhelmed when i see so many pencils in the box. Hard to find out the ones I like. They look so pretty altogether, though. Good to see that the sets remain affordable, since there are no open stock pencils for this brand. I look forward to seeing you drawing and colouring something with these. Thanks again.

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype Před rokem +1

      Haha, same for me. I also bought the 120 set, the square one, and this is actually the largest set of color pencils I ever had, and it is nice but difficult to get used to having so many pencils in front of me. Before this, the largest set that I had was 72 from Koh-i-Noor, and even that seemed huge to me. My number has normally been 24 - 48, depending on the brand, which I think is easily enough with high quality pencils. But I think the huge number of colors is the trick as to how cheaper pencils can deliver good results: Being able to choose from a larger variety of colors does make up for some of the lesser performance when it comes to mixing, blending and layering.

    • @berolinastrassmann
      @berolinastrassmann Před rokem

      @@justacatwhocantype Hi, same here,, my bigger set was a 48 Koh-i-Noor Mondeluz watercolour pencils. With the 120 I started making smaller sets to choose from, otherwise I am faffing with the trays back and forth finding the colours I need. It is true that a larger set allows for more layering, and it is less frustrating than trying to find the right hue and seeing that the 48 set does not have it. Happy colouring!

    I bought the square brutfuner set of 120? last year solely for the pastels. I was wanting the Holbein pastel set but they were too expensive. I pulled out the pastels colors and keep them as my own pastel set, much cheaper still so pretty to have a set of pastels. I find that I also like the greens and neutrals from the set. What I don’t like is sharpening the square shape, I think it is harder.
    Great review and yes it was thanks to you that I bought them.

    I got some random metallic pencils; copper, gold, silver and I think I have a 'brass' metallic. I have a bunch that came from a lot of different sets hanging around and I wanted to use them somehow so I started to play around with them.
    One thing I figured out is that they work really good for coloring small fish in coloring books that don't have much tooth in the paper.
    Also, I find that if you use them for a light layering with other colors, the metallic doesn't come through if it's just a little bit. So, you could think of most silvers as another grey. And the Prismacolor gold metallic works perfectly with the french greys. I use it almost interchangeably with the two darker French greys.

    I've not worked with a lot of metallics but I love products like Lindy's Stamp Gang Magicals so I think these will be up my alley.
    I'm back-and-forthing about the 72 set...it's a good price for sure...it's just that I already have the 50 set. Are the extra colors similar or individual enough to warrant the purchase do you think? I'm going to decide in the morning for sure but I'll probably order it. Rationalization: I can share the 50 set or have a good back up. There we go. Lol
    Lol and I've duplicated a couple supplies accidentally too. I started doing swatches of everything so rather than digging out my supplies, I go through my swatch books. You know how sometimes you have a stamp set or ink color on your wishlist for ages and get it finally, but things happen so you can't craft right away. That's what I did, so when I had time to craft, I forgot I had it and reordered it, and later on found the first purchase in its drawer. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I gave the dupes to a crafty friend, so I was happy to share something but I was bummed to have wasted the money.

I used to buy the big packs of the 6x9 size precut and used it as my go-to paper for messing around. It's not Arches, but it behaves similarly (holds on to color, great for layering not for lifting, similar blending). CP is on the light side for texture so nice for detail. Best for lighter applications vs really wet work. Hard to find in stock and comes in limited sizes.
