Watched this video on an HDTV and based on the captured footage from the console - that black PS2 TO HDMI adapter certainly looks best to me
The image is sharp enough, the resolution is pretty good, the picture doesn't come through as muddy or blurry as the other converters, and the colors seem fine as well, though obviously it's hard to judge how accurate they are to what the games are actually supposed to look like
Obviously nothing will beat the more professional solutions like OSSC or Framemeister or other similar devices that cost hundreds of dollars but these do look good as a more budget limited investment into having a decent PS2 output on a non crt screen

Commenting again, a little bit later in the video actually just get my opinion in here but I actually like the look of an imperfect HDI picture, I actually like it to be a little bit soft because not only I think it hides the sharp edges of pixels, but it gives it like a little bit of a retro look. I plan on streaming PS2 games in future with a PS2 console for the experience and I think a perfect image makes it seem artificial like it’s being emulated on a PC and I don’t want that I want an imperfect image for the authentic experience

  • @braddl9442

I think why a lot of people got the Pound cable is because it supported PS1 and the settings they used were the ones that would support ps1 on ps2 so its not as sharp as it could be because they chose to be able to support PS1 functionality. That is where some the the expense comes from I think.

You are correct, the Adapters which support the PS1 convert the RGB Signal but Adapters which convert a YPBPR Signal have way better image quality on the PS2. The PS1 doesn't support YPBPR, only RGB and RGB has bad image quality.

Some results from my own testing: (Slim, Pal ps2, 42" HDTV, )
1- Component cable direct to TV, I used this setup for a while and games that support 480p (eg. Outrun) looks ok, unfortunatley only a small amount of games in PS2 library support 480p
2- Cheap PS2 to HDMI solution (you listed this as your prefered solution) - slightly better than above, however this is really just passing the ps2 component output through HDMI
3- LevelHike PS2 cable- My prefered solution, takes the RGB (scart) signal and upscales to 720p, 60hz. A good solution for non-480p games, unfortunately with games that do have 480p support, you can't enable it , but they still look good and better than above solutions.
The cable was budget friendly, ( around 30 Dollars) and imo outside of the crazy expensive retrotink solutions, the best solution for my setup.

It's all very confusing. I like what I see at 5:30 but the reviews are mixed. It seems to not work on some tv's, and for others it works for a few days or a few weeks then the screen turns green. I had to repurchase a ps2 to play my old games and assumed the "slim" was more modern and had hdmi output. For $8 it's worth the risk and many said it's the same or better than one's that cost $30 and up. Your video proves this.

I have both a 39001 fat and a 77001 slim but mainly looking for one for my 39001. The only issue I have is when it comes to PS1 games working. I have the composite cable and a 13 inch CRT TV but I really prefer a somewhat bigger screen so looking to get something for my HDTV. I need to keep games in 4.3 and be able to play PS1 games on it which I think could be an issue with 240i resolution.
I could just get a converter thing for compostie to HDMI since I have the composite but that's just taking the worst signal and blowing it up on a larger screen with no deinterlacing or whatever.
Component I tired before and was good image though the cheap cable was not. My current TV doesn't have Component slots so maybe could get a component cable to HDMI adapter and a component cable. I think I still have the old component cable but it's a cheap made and makes a loud buzzing sound on the TV speaker audio.
I also have an mClassic which would be cool to use for removing jagged edges but I think it only works on 720p outputs. I do have a backwards compatible PS3 CECHA01 model but I just want to play on original hardware again. Wish I had a good size CRT TV but no room for one right now.

I purchased the "PS2 to HDMI" about 3 years ago and it's been a phenomenal solution, but there are a few cons I'd like to mention. If you're using free mcboot to upscale the signal the highest this adapter will pass is 1080i. The PlayStation 2 is capable of passing 1080p, I do it on component cables no problem, but this dongle will not process 1080p. The other con is that the positioning of the USB port doesn't allow for you to stand the PlayStation 2 upright. I really wish they would have put it on the other side, when using this dongle you are forced to lay the PS2 flat. Other than that I'm completely satisfied with the product and I am not looking for any other Solutions because this thing just simply works, and in my opinion the picture is the best especially when it comes to the colors. I use mine on a 4K television and an older 1080p television and it always looks amazing.

If you are using free mcboot you can Force the game display at a different resolution then it's original. The PS2 HDMI adapter will pass any signal except for 1080p, so it is not at fault.

@Aimilios I know exactly what you mean. No, I didn't bought the "model G300" (the one that comes in that box). I bought one that came in a simple transparent plastic bag. The body/chassis is black plastic just like the one in this video. I've seen that many of these adapters have the audio jack made out of different materials and colors like metallic or black plastic, mine is yellow plastic (in case this helps you identify a particular version you are trying to find). I could list all the text that is in the sticker on the plastic bag if that helps you too somehow.

PlayStation 2 is the best gaming console until now, just imagine, there a lot of good games that you can play, good stories on different genres. What an awesome console, plus backward compatible and it can turn into dvd player

What capture card do you use in this video? I have Bitfunx upscaler, but the picture is awful and colours all are greeny, not so bright and delightful as in the video

  • @ArtemyMalchuk
    @ArtemyMalchuk Před rokem +10

To me, black ps2hdmi adapter is, unsurprisingly, best for PS2 while Bitfunx is rockin for PS1. Sadly, it is God-awful for PS2 with its washed colors and ghosting and visible scanlines. I actually doubted myself if this was RGB/YPbPr displayed or just plain composite like in the yellow dongle. My guess is, PS1 RGB at 240p looks better upscaled (or rather, can't be passed through HDMI at all without upscaling) while PS2 component at 480p/576i is still good as is so upscaling is redundant and bad for the picture. I'll need a way to make the two into a hodgepodge Y-adapter so I could plug HDMI into one for PS1 and into other for PS2.

@@ristiristi I was curious about the lag. Coming from the FGC, there have been many solutions proposed over the years. From deinterlacing devices, to scalers, line doublers etc... and one of the main things we look for is a low latency solution. I had even purchased a few display lag measuring devices to see if it's within my threshold of tolerance. And was wondering if any of these devices have had their output measured with such devices.

This is a simple question. Why not still use your component cable, and use a component to HDMI adapter for the upscale? I believe that would be the best way to go, but you are limited to 480i output from the PS2, so no PS1 games.

Hello, the advantage of the dongle is that it captures the signal directly out of the console is therefore not affected by the quality of a cable, analogy as good as it is, the bass reflection is good, but very expensive which would put off 90 percent of people.
