  • Today I'm looking at a single malt scotch whisky from the Glenallachie distillery. This is their famous 15 year old. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    For anyone reading, the Meikle Tor is probably Billy Walkers distillate at 6 years old, but anything older is inherited stock that BW has cask finished with a heavy hand. Keep in mind that Glendronach was a heavy meaty distillate that took to heavy cask finishing well but GlenAllachie is a much lighter and more delicate distillate that is inevitably getting drowned out by whatever casks Billy is using.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před 5 dny +2

      Well said! The Glendronach comparison is an important one! 🥃

    I actually prefer the 12 YO which is nice as it's quite a bit cheaper than the 15 in my market. But I'd still rather save and splurge for the 18 YO, which is one of my all time fave scotches

  • @dextercool
    @dextercool Před 5 dny +2

    This works OK in a flight of sherried bottles e.g. Tamdhu 15, Balblair 15 etc. where one can appreciate its nice features (the resinous chocolate-y notes, the spice) while noticing it's not as refined as those others. A good Christmas time malt.

    This is one of my top 3 scotches - I like the rich berry flavor (and I actually like those old label designs). I just wish I could find it here in the Maine/New Hampshire area, without paying extra to have it shipped to me.

    Cant comment all too much on this, so mostly just writing for the algo here.
    Never was into GlenAllachie for the reasons you’ve also mentioned. Its good whisky, just for the same money you can get Edradour, Glenturret, Glenfarclas, Tamdhu etc… if you’re going for that sherried style , so I never picked up a bottle myself - looks like its the same deal with this one

    I like Glenallachie, but haven’t bought the 15 or 18 yet. They’re fairly expensive around here. I did get a single barrel which is excellent, and I like the 10 cask strength. Also just got one of the peated Meikle Toir bottles, and it’s pretty good as well.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před 5 dny +2

      I prefer the 10 and 12 to this, actually. Meikle Toir was interesting as well. Need a full bottle for myself at some point. 🥃

    @Martin-uj7wj Před 4 dny

    I've not seen it for less than £70ish in the UK. There's much better available here at that price. I think the whole range is a tad over rated and expensive but I would say the 10yo cask strength is the best of them if you like that sort of thing.

    Same feelings here. Even in my sherry-head days I never connected with this brand. A bit too contrived or something. I reckon the distillate is more suited to ex-Bourbon maturation. Here's hoping we'll see those on the shelf in another 4-6 years. Happy Canada Day!

    • @Gwhisky

    I was able to try try the GA15 with the new label recently and was shocked by the thin mouthfeel. With no body at all, it drinks well below it's abv. Maybe the most overhyped brand in Scotchdom.

    I've tried this Scotch and it didn't do it for me - I still like the Bunnahabhain 12 as my old reliable sipper. I tried a bourbon the other day that I thought was pretty good for an inexpensive bottle- Barrell Foundation ($52 in Minnesota) - not bad, but it's not Scotch '-)

    Interesting. I love your reviews, but my taste preferences are completely different from yours. However, your reviews are informative enough that I can usually glean from them whether I will like the whisky, regardless of where you land on it. As for Glenallachie, I like everything Billy Walker is putting out and love most of his stuff. The 15 is my favorite so far. The fact that you don’t like that it is cask dominated is exactly what I like about it. Too many distilleries are using cheap “seasoned” Sherry casks now. I really appreciate that Billy Walker is using good, active Sherry casks.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před 5 dny

      Appreciate the sentiment. The world would be a boring place if we all shared the same opinions! I agree that Glenallachie is using some quality casks, but the influence is just too heavy for me. Personally I tend to prefer the 10 over the 15. Cheers! 🥃
