I just discovered Rhiannon Giddens and her music. It reminds me of how little I know about this nation of 330 million. I was born and raised in NYC but spent most of my adult years traveling the globe in the military and State Department. I retired in NC and never heard of her. She is absolutely wonderful. I’m going to buy all her music for my listening pleasure. It’s a reminder that the noise around me is a distraction, while everyday people never get the attention they deserve. Keep up the good work. The nation needs you.

We first discovered Rhiannon when she was with the Carolina Chocolate Drops at Merlefest about a decade ago. Besides having a voice for the ages, she is a fine instrumentalist. She has dug deep into the American tradition, and, for those of us who love traditional music, she is a treasure. But that's not all she does. Check out her duet with Paul Simon on his American Tune. It is as good as music gets.

@@im-already-tired-tomorrow - You need to stop pretending that my comments are about Rhiannon. They are about people like YOU and Bernard.
You can play games and try to make it about ME being prejudiced. But that's exactly what biased people do.
Rhiannon isn't bringing anything to the 21st century. Elizabeth Cotten's music is already known. And her records sell to those who value MUSIC and folk CULTURE.
*Rhianna is only bringing E.C's music to those who need a "beautiful" golden girl to perform it for them to stop and take notice....to value it. My point was that this VISUAL BIAS (and race bias) is still lingering after all these decade since E. Cotten died. People like you don't do this to Black men anymore, but you keep waiting for someone who looks like Scarlett Johansen to sing like Aretha. Or a bronze colored Barbie to sing like Nina Simone.... when it should be about the MUSIC.
*If you keep Re-discovering women like Elizabeth Cotten it means she isn't lost- she's getting thrown away while YOU and Bernhard look for something bright and shiney to catch your eyes.*

If only the BRILLIANT Elizabeth Cotten had been a biracial woman. Maybe she wouldn't have had to be a maid " discovered " by her white employers. Maybe she would have gotten her due before she was a senior citizen. Same for all the other Negro female folk, blues, and country singers Rhiannon borrows from.
Sad. So much talent and human potential is lost in this old Beauty and color Content.

I've been following Rhiannon Giddens for 20 years. Her talent is so wide-ranging, from singing, to playing a banjo, fiddle, or guitar. But her voice is what ties it together, and her research into the music, from Celtic to Appalachian to historically Black music, to what ever she sets her mind to! Love it all.
