Here in Washington state, squirrel has to be hunted with shotgun IF you are in an area that allows squirrel hunting. Forest grouse can be hunted with .22 though. This is what happens when non-hunters make the rules!
We've used the CCI Standard HP for a long time, and it has performed very well on squirrel and other small game. We enjoy the lower noise, very good accuracy and always mushrooms well. In suppressed rifles, it is extremely quiet. If you use a scope with a parallax adjustment for 50yds instead of the typical fixed 100yd in non adjustable centerfire rifle scopes, you will see your groups improve with little/no movement in POI. While 100yd fixed para scopes work for most hunting situations, they are not the best for shorter range shooting for small groups or precision target work. We routinely use adjustable para scopes for very precise work.
Thanks for the good cliff's notes type video. I like that the changes you made had tangible results. I also tap on my scope when I make an adjustment Even watch can get hung up trying to find it's level.
Back 15 or so years ago banging on your scope was almost mandatory with the quality of the scopes I could afford. Lol I still hit my good ones from time to time out of habit. Old ingrained things like that die hard when you have been shooting as long as a lot of us have.
Nah, I dont need to kill something to prove an ammunition is good or not, as long as you can accurately place a shot out to the distance i plan on shooting them at, anything hollow point over 1000 fps will do.
It is a good squirrel ammo, have used it for yrs. As a matter of fact, with the right shot placement, it will take down a 200lb. hog. One of my hunting buddy’s killed a 200+-lb sow with it. We used bolt actions though, a CZ, and a Ruger 77/22
Damn good shot placement. I been feeling my fridge with this ammo for years. Does good on cottonmouth in the summer for cottonmouth as well when I'm fishing
Good move changing stock and scope groups got a lot better I just love them Green Mountain barrels reasonably priced and they're good shooters I shoot a lot of green tag CCI out of mind they shoot great give them a try sometime good stuff keep up the good work
I have had similar results with the ammo as far as it shooting a really good group and then the next it kicks a couple fliers. I haven’t shot since but next time I do I plan on letting my rifle cool all the way to see if it has to do with it not liking a warm barrel
Yeah, I was perfectly satisfied with those groups, I’m not gonna shoot this ammo at targets once it’s sighted in. Will use for hunting pretty much exclusively.
Even the cci Quiet works for squirrels. 710 fps. for your bolt action or 835 fps.will cycle the 10/22 action. round nose of hollow point - the squirrel won't know the difference.
I know that, I’ve killed squirrels with a pellet rifle. But for a good clean kill it had to be a headshot. That was kind of the idea of the video, is it precise enough to make a good clean kill.
Yeah most .22 will kill just about anything, I just thought maybe this being a hollow point and subsonic it might hit alittle harder then most Subs. I pretty much only use subsonics now because I don’t need hearing protection and it’s more accurate… for the most part.
@@lawrencehawk5179 won’t fire those in my match barrels. GM makes a barrel specifically for supersonic like that. It’s a 1-9 twist. And the subsonic GM does not want you to use is the 900 fps and lower stuff.
Question, Im wanting to build something similar to this setup and your budget build. Magpul x-22 stock, green mountain barrel, Arken scope and bx trigger. How much accuracy difference do you see between this rifle and the budget build? Does the aftermarket action and bolt in the budget build make a huge difference vs the stock? Thanks
Saw a vid some time ago about ft lbs energy. Stated 14 ft #'s was minimum for lethality on something 200#. The .22 LR crries that force to 400 yds. So yeah, if you can reliably make shot placement these will do it.
It wasn't the stock. You had a loose Optical element inside that old scope. In most applications a mild stock contact with the barrel will actually improve accuracy, not be detrimental to it. All these people who believe that a free-floating barrel is always more accurate are so full of s*** it is impossible to imagine. When you free float Barrel you bring up a good number of very infant-testicle imperfections that can affect accuracy. That's why just a few pounds of pressure from the end of the stock on that Barrel make some very fabulously accurate rifles.
Very true. Although the stock may not have made the rifle more accurate, I like the ergonomics of it much better. And I am able to do more with it with the Mlok attachments, and I like the grip angle much better. It’s more comfortable for me to shoot with this stock which actually does make me, not the gun more accurate.
So pretty much any accuracy test is telling if it’s good for squirrels, or not. Didn’t see any squirrels. Not criticizing, just pointing out the title of the video.
You didnt see the Squirrel target? Or the Squirrel at the end? Everyone knows if you can put a good accurate shot on a Squirrel a 40 grain HP will do the job. I didnt feel the need to kill a Squirrel to prove a ammos worth. I was centering around if the bullet would hit its mark at ranges people shoot at Squirrels, and i think i proved it would. Theres plenty of channels that have kill shots on Squirrels if thats what you were looking for.
I use mil scopes and I’m somewhere around 1.6 mils on my scope so maybe 2-3” depending on ammunition. Best to try it for yourself as every rifle/ammo combo is different. And velocity, bullet speed drop factor, barrel length, wind direction and speed plays a role in drop. There are a ton of ballistic apps for your phone to help you figure that out. I love StrelokPro but it’s not available in the states anymore, soldiers in Ukraine were using it and for some reason they banned it for civilian use in the USA. lol, what a joke.
On the old scopes sometimes you had to tap the center of the scope to make sure it actually moved, well on the cheaper Nikons anyway. Pretty common stuff if you were a shooter in the 90s and early 2000s. You must be a younger guy. Read the comments below, a guy actually makes a comment about it.
