Dougie MacLean with choir at Perthshire Amber Festival in 2011. Dougie MacLean's 'Turning Away' with a touch of 'Adiemus'. See www.perthshireamber.com for details of this year's festival.
Hi Geoff. Am very aware of Mary Black's version. Have followed her since about 1992 and have almost every CD album she has ever released, even met her daughter back stage when she was about 9 years old and my daughter was only about 3 and I was pregnant with my son. My husband and I even went to see Roisin O in Liverpool. My routes are in Scotland and I consequently also love Ireland. I love folk music (sadly not an interest of my family anymore!). I also knew Andrew Russel at school (I know that story too) and had a crush on him aged 11/12/13/14 so this version is very precious to me. I always wanted to join his choir but moved south of the border aged 14 to live with my mother and step father. I have great sympathy for his family, especially his kids and wife. Andrew was always a very talented musician. I always remember his cello playing at youth orchestra in a Peebles area primary school. He uses to wiggle his ears to make my friend Morag and I laugh. When I left Scotland to "run away" with my mother he was one of the only 2 people that I told and he kept the secret long enough for me to make my exit, despite my reservations. For that I will always be grateful and is why I was glad to see him at a school reunion some 25+ years later. I was not popular for speaking to him but he was and always will be someone I will remember fondly, even if against society's judgements!
In darkness we do what we can In daylight we're oblivion Our hearts so raw and clear Are turning away, turning away from here On water we have walked like the fearless child What was fastened, we've unlocked revealing wondrous wild And in search of confirmation we have jumped into the fire And scrambled with our burning feet through uncontrolled desire (Chorus) There's a well upon the hill from our ancient past Where an age is standing still, holding strong and fast And there's those that try to tame it and to carve it into stone But words cannot extinguish it, however hard they're thrown (Chorus) On Racherie they have worked with their island dreams By Lough Cleggan they have nourished in mountain streams And in searching for acceptance they had given it away Only the children of their children know the price they had to pay (Chorus 2x)

Gosh. Dougie's voice just gets richer and smoother with time.

Brilliant! Love Dougie!
In darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away, turning away from here
On water we have walked like the fearless child
What was fastened, we've unlocked revealing wondrous wild
And in search of confirmation we have jumped into the fire
And scrambled with our burning feet through uncontrolled desire
(Chorus)
There's a well upon the hill from our ancient past
Where an age is standing still, holding strong and fast
And there's those that try to tame it and to carve it into stone
But words cannot extinguish it, however hard they're thrown
(Chorus)
On Racherie they have worked with their island dreams
By Lough Cleggan they have nourished in mountain streams
And in searching for acceptance they had given it away
Only the children of their children know the price they had to pay
(Chorus 2x)
Awesome. What a guy. Must get to hear him live
Quality choir
Only 216 hits??? I wonder if people realize that this is the Scot who wrote The Gael not to mention Caledonia.

In darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away,
turning away from here
On the water we have walked
like the fearless child
What was fastened we've unlocked revealing wondrous wild
And in search of confirmation
we have jumped into the fire
And scrambled with our burning feet through uncontrolled desire
And in darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away,
turning away from here
There's a well upon the hill
from our ancient past
Where an age is standing still
holding strong and fast
And there's those that try to tame it
and to carve it into stone
Ah but words cannot extinguish it however hard they're thrown
And in darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away,
turning away from here
On Loch Etive they have worked
with their Highland dreams
By Kilcrennan they have nourished
in the mountain streams
And in searching for acceptance
they had given it away
Only the children of their children
know the price they had to pay
And in darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away,
turning away from here
In darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away,
turning away from here
In darkness we do what we can
In daylight we're oblivion
Our hearts so raw and clear
Are turning away, turning away from here
Are turning away, turning away from here
Are turning away, turning away from here
Fabulous . . . .
RIP Andrew
Andy, have you heard Mary Black's version of this? That's how I know it.... Love the Scot's version though!!!! ;-)
To be fair, it's not his version, he wrote it :)
As Al said, this is the man who wrote it!
Mary does a very good version but this is indeed Dougie’s song.
Love this, but I'm from another part of the world and have little to no insight of the meaning of the lyrics....
