it isnt, here’s a hadith: “Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of `Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. Anas also narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to eat odd number of dates.” [sahih al bukhari 953]

It is sunnah to have dates before eid ul fitr if you look closely at the hadith
But for Eid ul adha, it's sunnah to fast and break your fast from the meat of the sacrifice or better still with dates that's after Eid prayers
