The shittiest thing here is that the Bridgertons are pretty much "high" on the social ladder. Their words have merit. So not only did he completely break Pen's heart by laughing off the idea of courting her to his friends, he also may have ruined any potential prospects for her in said 'marriage market'. He laughs, everyone else in that group laughs...and there goes any potential suitors for Pen. Good on her for standing up for herself! I've always loved her.
Thank you!!! What he did in that episode was so much worse than the similar thing he did in the books because of who he was talking to, and this is exactly why!

Yes, it's sexist and it's messed up, but back then this was what happened. If someone so much as even looked at you sideways, that was it for you. Daphne had her hair up like a child in most episodes. They were trying to portray her as a shy, innocent girl wanting to marry for the sake of her family. Penelope, here is portrayed as a confident woman, open to take on a lover, that's why the open hair and bolder locks.

Not to mention that in the book, while remaining kinda curvy, she actually looses weight, which I always thought was a huge shame because you never know if that's on of the reasons Colin finally falls for her or not. I'm glad they didn't ask gorgeous Nicola to loose weight for the show and that Pen just gained confidence by choosing her own clothes and wearing her hair in a more flattering way! Shonda Rimes did really good with that!

@@kristinesharp6286 That could be a possibility as true about the current moment of this talk, but what she is calling him out on is what he has firmly stated to multiple possible suiters that in their wildest dreams, he would never court Penelope. He does state “never” and that it’s a wild idea.
He may thought of it as harmless chatter, he may have even stated it with the intention that they are friends and he doesn’t see her as a lover, but the overall effect is that he humiliated her by making it sound like, to his peers, that Penelope isn’t a person worth courting.
He was embarrassed to be mistaken as a couple with her, again, probably because he only sees themselves as friends. But Penelope’s reputation was shot down by his joking statement and her feelings hurt by that type of rejection.
If he was worried about her reputation from the beginning, talking her up with honest admiration is still possible, even with stating that they are not courting. Exp: “I am not courting Penelope, but she is a lovely lady. She is smart, kind, etc. What any man would be lucky to be with Penelope.” Of course, this is also very idealistic and would make Colin and simple perfect character- and therefore far from realistic.
It is one thing to give him benefit of the doubt as to why he said what he did, but it’s another if his words created consequences for Penelope, which they did. It is the ridiculousness of how society functioned at that time and the ruthless results of gossip that effects anyone who experiences it.

It is a very sad thing that Colin does appreciate Penelope but he hasn’t done more to give back to her for her kindness of supporting him. He isn’t a horrible person from it but he is learning the hard way of what it means to take a friend for granted and the consequences of it. A very relatable thing for a lot of people.

Their non-verbal conversation is almost better then the dialog. Penelope steps forward when she confronts him with the truth and Colin steps back quite befuddled. Penelope is aggresive and more powerful in this scene. I love it. The actors are fantastic.❤
She also slightly shakes her head when Colin ask if there's something wrong between them. Like seriously boy, i just told you my problem and you ain't got nothing to say about it! Brilliant!

If we're to believe that Colin subconsciously has feelings or at least some awareness of Penelope, he may have made thar remark to deliberately remove her prospects. He may not want to marry her, but he still wants her as his 'friend,' and for him to continue giving him special treatment. If she were to be courted and get married, she wouldn't be able to give him so much attention.
We don't know what else he said because Pen walked away. At least he will make amends by helping her get a husband
@@anthyavila9726 This would make him a way worse person though because being an unmarried woman in that time and society was a terrible thing. She's be at the mercy of her Mother until she died and then would, presumably (because noone knows she's making her own money) be dependent on her sister's charity or anything their mother left her. If she was lucky, this was a life of genteel poverty where everyone looked down on her for her shabby, outdated clothes (because the money has to last) or she has to work which is considered shameful and she'd be "kicked out" of polite society. Some women became governesses or lady's companions but that's about as good as a she could have expected with many other worse options.
Pen is literally fighting for her life and future and if he degraded her to keep her available for him, that would be insanely cruel.
The fact that he is asking "Is there something wrong? Between US I MEAN." is just very telling. He doesn't even actually ask how she's doing after she told him for ONCE about her actual personal problems. That man needs to learn

I think we also need to remember that it wasn’t just him rejecting her but it was also him influencing others. The Bridgerton family is one of the Highest status families. They are children of a Viscount who passed his title to Anthony, Daphne was the diamond of her season who was not only courted by a duke but also a prince, on top of that they along with Agatha Danbury have the ear of the queen, a queen who helped plan and influence Daphne’a wedding but also Anthony’s attempted marriage to Edwina. They are high high status which means they have pull and influence. If one of them suggests something loud and publicly it will likely influence others. By telling the group of friends he would never court her, Colin inadvertently influenced them and damaged any potential prospects beyond just him. It was a callous thing to do even if at the time he did not intend to hurt him. Penelope should make him grovel.

@@nikohl7046 the book Romancing Mister Bridgerton Pen and Colin are older and Pen is definitely considered too old for the marriage mart. There are no other suitors for Pen. That's something the TV has adapted to include. I don't want to give spoilers away but I'm not surprised they have added some competition for Colin.

Here she also says that she is a 'laughing stock' even when she changes her wardrobe. i find it so sad that the first time she took the step to be brave, she seems to have been put down and shamed. Especially because of the tears in her eyes here. Poor pen, i hope colin really sees her this season.

I noticed that too. I think that when she told him that she was embarrassing him, he realized how much he hurt her. Only then did he gather the severity of his actions. and you can see the pain and shock on his face
I’m shocked by some of the comments. He is in the wrong not because he doesn’t want to court his best friend, but because he said it to the high society as a joke like “pfff, I will never court her”. And everybody laughed, it was so disgusting. And that’s what Penelope trying to emphasize by “You miss me, yet I embarrass you and become laughing stock after your words”. She’s had the BIGGEST confidence growth above everybody else. Her mental transformation was amazing
And THAT is how you disembowel a man with your verbal daggers!! 😂 I love everything about this scene! It's like a master class in acting from these two. All their little micro expressions really show through. While there is dialogue in the scene, they've both made the absolute best of all their quiet moments. What I love is that while it's fun watching Colin get dragged here, this scene actually isn't about him. It's about Penelope standing up for herself. What's painful about what's happening between them is Penelope's demanding respect from the one person she never thought she'd have to ask it of. 💔😓
Totally agree, the acting is superb. The facial expressions are spot on and Luke in particular conveyed so much emotions without any words. This season is going to be amazing!

Less than 2 minutes long and my heart is already breaking for Penelope, one of the best characters in Bridgerton. She deserves better treatment (from Colin AND the Featheringtons)

You know, just from watching the series I do think he has always been attracted to her. The he looks at Penelope, the way he like catches his breath when she’s near, the way he smiles or just the way he approaches her… HE LIKES HER! In season one is much less obvious than season 2 but it’s still there! Oh, how my heart aches for the character Penelope. Forced by her mother’s bad taste to wear unflattering shades & hairstyles (s 1 & 2) while her mother focused on finding the other 2 daughters suitors. Poor Pen’s always been treated by her family as a nuisance when, in fact, she’s the heart & soul of it. She’s totally justified in her anger towards Colin for saying such hurtful things. Acknowledging him formerly & calling him out after being so meek & mild in seasons 1 & 2 shows how Pen’s grown. I hope Colin has to work the entire season to win back her love & respect.

Did you hear it? That sound? A thud on the ground? That was Penelope dropping the microphone after having just served Colin Bridgerton a direct hit to his ego and his pride. If my girl keeps serving it up like this through the whole season with other characters, then Season 3 of "Bridgerton" just might become my favorite season....!!!
Bridge is really reflecting real life drama. Men sometimes the woman they swear they dont want around their homies is that same woman they can’t wait to talk to when they are alone.
I do love that she is putting him in his place and let’s rejoice at the fact that she is looking like a total boss while doing it. Add to that the fact that she looks gorgeous to boot. This hairstyle on her looks super stunning. Make him work for it pen Colin is about to be pining after her for sure. He really is blissfully unaware. I truly believe he has actually liked her for sometime he just put her in the friend zone and has been actively avoiding actually realizing that his heart has been partial to her from the very beginning. His mind may lie to him but his eyes tend to follow his heart he stares at her quite frequently and for far longer than one would stare at a friend. He looks at her in awe and such admiration and not in the way a friend would. That bit with his friends seems more like an attempt at denial. His friends have noticed his feelings before he has otherwise why would the conversation be brought up at all. They have seen how he looks at her and his actions have been loud enough that they pick up on it. I can’t wait for him to realize it and I am sure his jealousy will be something to behold. I can already imagine the looks he will be sending her way once he actually realizes his feelings. I mean the looks he gives her now have been intense so I can only just imagine when he actually knows his heart the screen might actually combust.

It's interesting how we see Colin chase after Penelope instead of her chasing after him. I love seeing how much Penelope has grown in these 2 seasons. I also love how she's speaking her mind and even though she might still have feelings, she's telling him that she was hurt because of what he said about her behind her back. I'm enjoying this dynamic and can't wait to see how this ends. I'm so proud of Penelope/ Lady Whistledown
