The great migration took place between 1910 and 1970s. Black folk got the hell up out of the Jim Crow south in pursuit of new opportunities on the East coat, mid-West, and West Coast of the United Sates of America.
Compton, CA was the womb that sheltered and fed me. I was snatched from that womb and landed in a suburb. Life in the suburb was foreign; I hated it. I lived amongst people with different outlooks and perspectives, I simply didn’t fit. The way we love and cares for each other in Compton didn’t exist in the suburb. What saved me from jumping off the bridge? The Chicanos…they took m me in with no questions and no judgement. Treated me like I mattered and stood up for me when BS went down, fed me, my teammates, drove me to and from practice, so on and so forth.
This young brother D-Smoke…he’s us paying homage; giving that much do respect. Man, I hope and pray this generation of black and brown folk come realize how connected we are as people.
The history is there…the families exist…my own brother married an amazing Latina - other family members too.
Anyway, I love what this young man is putting down.
