Foxwell NT630 Elite ABS and Airbag OBD Code Scanner Review - FAIL!

  • Update: DO NOT BUY Foxwell! I got new 2020 Nissan and SRS and ABS modules have "Unable to communicate" errors with latest firmware software updates. Regular OBD2 works fine. Manual selection shows 2016 latest year supported. Contacted customer support and got reply that new cars not supported and to buy NT630 Plus. So life time support means only supported until a newer model is released! I wasted good money on a Foxwell product that is now useless junk for future.
    This OBD2 reader works for ABS, SRS (air bag) and SAS (steering angle sensor) calibration. I used it to diagnose an airbag warning light in live real time and found it was the clock spring unit. I show how to register unit and update system software. You get free lifetime upgrade support once registered.
    Standard CAN BUS OBDII diagnostic readers just scan common stuff and reset clearing codes. Bluetooth ELM327 units are junk. To repair the hard stuff you need this model. The Elite seems to be newer than Pro model. I got this cheap from China on Aliexpress and 7 day delivery to USA. Use to bleed air from anti-lock brakes. Works for many domestic and imported cars. Will not fix transmission problem errors. Other brands like Innova, Autel ML619. Maozua C310+ and Launch X431 are similar ODB and ODB2 products but cost more.

    Older video but I just got one of these from Amazon. I replaced the clock spring assembly in my Infiniti and had to calibrate the steering angle sensor. Worked perfectly and was also able to clear a flashing airbag light.

      This worked fine on my old car. Got a 2022 Nissan and found that no newer cars are supported. I requested help from Foxwell and they have stopped any new development for this model and said I need to buy newer model. Very disappointed.

    Interesting that you bought the new scanner direct from China, and it took 2 hours to download updates. Of course after you hooked up you home computer to it and downloaded software from China, after giving them your PI. You're a brave man.

      The support is the most important part. I got a 2020 Nissan and found out Foxwell stopped updating for this model so it is useless for newer cars. Very disappointed.

    My understanding is it is faster and better to remove the SD card and use an adaptor and plug in the card to the computer, not use the cord to connect it during updating.

    Software to access thousands of vehicles is complex. Most cannot be reversed engineered, so it is purchased from the manufacturer w/royalties paid for each unit sold. This is why many scan tool have no access to sub-systems on vehicles. The Onboard Diagnostic System-2 has been in use since 1992 & all after 1996. The engine data is global and not specific to each vehicle as required by law. Ex; Steering Assist System needs re-set after replacing a position sensor, motor, controller or alignment. A GM Malibu from 2013-2015 has identical parts & software then changed. The Factory re-set is turn left to stop, hold 2 seconds, then right, hold for 2 seconds then center as if on alignment rack. The controller learns new values and provides the appropriate assist. Otherwise it wants to pull left or right while going straight. Sensors on the steering shaft are common failures, but GM instructs techs to replace upper assembly complete, not just sensor. Plus there is 9mb of data on the card to cover all models from 92 to present. Special functions to sweep gages, roll windows, lock & unlock are not accessible as in SIR. Passengers presence sensor detect 42 pounds. Groceries or child, no inflator module deployment. If replaced it must be learned for weight on cushion. This is why the Foxwell NT650 Elite must be used as you know the body system actually exceed trans & engine (PCM) but not full access to SIR module or Body Control (BCM) as class-2 serial data & CAN data are used depending on how fast data needs transferred. Class-2 modules have back-up programs and CAN data, quite to allow important data to pass, then resumes regular communication. State-of-health messages are sent every 2 seconds, if a module or node fails to reply, mode master module takes over while flagging the module that failed. GM uses global architecture for every country with exceptions, but emissions fall into a need to know everywhere, just basic info only. Live data is extremely useful for proper diagnostics as global says; Bank 1 O2 sensor. The O2 sensor is good & reporting but after 20 seconds of lean or rich, just show O2. Live data shows all injector open time is less than half. Best practices lead a tech to inspect fuel pressure, then vacuum hose to return-type regulator. Here a leak is found. Fuel dumped into engine that fuel mapping cannot correct. $52 regulator fixes problem while $158 O2 sensor repeats same code, problem still there. Knowledge of systems, live engine data (Not Generic Global OBD-2) and software by the manufacturer not from a cubical in a building, fixes vehicles, but cost $2k plus annual updates for the Brand. Plus bi-directional communication is important to all control by a tech as the procedure is written into the diagnostic flow chart.
    DK, ASE Master Tech since 78, Delco instructor on 30 subjects. Retired.
    Interesting product, but one can't do all as software files would be huge! No pending DTC's or 5 fail records for current code to drive & reproduce exact trouble specs. It's a tuna, but not tasty, sorry Charlie!

    Wow, I sense there is a great need for an ABS actuator (module) reset scanner, that bleeds the ABS module for the DIYer and thus saving the owner from having to take this issue to the dealerships, what with their exorbitant rates. Problem is, there are no reputable sources that the average Joe can count on for a factual and true review. I was hoping this was to be it, but alas it is not so. Do your viewers a good service and actually use the ABS function to see if it is actually possible to bleed the module with this unit, and not some sort of vaporware. You are in an ideal position to advance our knowledge, Kent, and I am hoping you see the need as well and lend a hand.

    • @steadyeddie7453
      @steadyeddie7453 Před 5 lety

      Hey Steve. I feel your pain. I bought an Autel that said it would bleed ABS. It did not. Sent it back and got this NT630 Elite. Plugged it into a 2002 Silverado and it actually worked. You probably know, so for other readers- ABS bleeding moves the air from the ABS unit only. You will still NEED to get the air out of the lines by bleeding a 4 corners. These thing are quirky and now it wont read a 2004 Tacoma. And you have to be prepared to download to your computer updates files from a 100% Chinese company.

      @@steadyeddie7453 Therein lies the problem for me, I drive a 2002 Tundra and I have yet to receive a good answer from Foxwell - their agent in the U.S. says it will, yet their agent in China says no (admittedly after much prodding on my part). The NT630 Elite is the unit I have been most focused on but I can't get past the uncertainty. Are you able to give any reassurance knowing it won't do the 2004 Tacoma? Not going to hold your feet to the fire, nor am I going to hold you responsible for my actions, but a little knowledge would be gratefully appreciated. BTW: I have a number of 1st generation Tundra owners waiting on my resolution to this issue. Thanks for the comment.

      @steadyeddie7453 Před 5 lety +1

      @@counterpoint6718 These lower priced scanners are hit or miss. The manufacturers oversell the features and range of applications. Both the Autel (which I sent back) and the Foxwell are hit or miss. I kept the Foxwell NT630 because it is designed as a dedicated ABS and SRS tool. The 630 has limited bildirectional communication which is needed for ABS bleeding. Now , will it work on your Tundra? Cant say. If I had one here I would try it. So, I sent back my Autel for a full refund. I suspect Foxwell would do the same. I suggest that you verify the return policy and if its 30 days like mine, then go for it.

      @counterpoint6718 Před 5 lety

      @@steadyeddie7453 I'll probably have to check out their return policies, though I was hoping someone would answer up that was knowledgeable on whether or not it is applicable to my vehicle. After emailing a dozen or more, and being assured that they will do everything I could image, I have become quite skeptical, hence the problem - whom do you believe?

    • @steadyeddie7453
      @steadyeddie7453 Před 5 lety

      @@counterpoint6718 Copy that. Unless you find someone who specifically used it on your make and model it becomes a crapshoot. I question some of the CZcamsr's as they are given the tool in exchange for a video review. Others are testing a product right out of the box and are obviously clueless, or just want their 5 minutes of video fame. You could try a dedicated Toyota Tundra forum. I would think someone there must have found a scan tool that does what you want. Otherwise, take a chance and get the Foxwell. Try it out, and if it doesnt work send it back. Then post your findings specific to your vehicle. Thats how we all learn. If I get a Tundra in, I'll test my 630 on it and update my findings. Good Luck.
