@phillipclearman859 look, if you like a politically infested show with age old political talking points, that's fine. But let's not pretend like this is comedy. There isn't a punchline or joke being made. It's "look at this effeminate man with a manbun with a feminine voice! Isn't that whacky and crazy?!" It's literally on par with baby humor. There isn't a joke out of that.
The problem with modern day "political humor" is that politics is 95% and the joke is 5%.
Look up some George Carlin skits. Dude made excellent political points but always delivered it as a joke to reinforce his thoughts. The point was never to force a view down your throat, it was to make light of politics with humor itself, it just had that following effect of making you think about what the subject was really about.
Edit: Also, the hate boils down to it just not being funny. As a comedy, it's just not good. Pretty sure the only reviewers that have reviewed it positively are actual, known grifters that say whatever they have to for controversy sake.

The bad cutaway gags make me so angry, so here are two ideas to replace them.
For the "vegan wolf" one: After Birchum makes his snarky comment about vegan wolves, hard cut to a close-up of a wolf with a David Attenborough voice saying "And here we have the noble North American Vegan Wolf in its natural habitat: San Fran, California." Then zoom out to reveal that it's on a date at a hipster coffee shop.
For the puking one: The character who pukes (idk his name) says that he's thrown up on every continent except one. Birchum says "Let me guess, you haven't barfed in Antarctica yet?" And the guy replies "Nah, Australia. I did Antarctica last year." Hard cut to him being chased by a leopard seal, throwing up in fear, and the leopard seal being grossed out and losing interest.
Are these stupid? Sure, but not nearly as garbage as the ones in the show.
EDIT: replaced the polar bear in the Antarctica one with a leopard seal, since there are no polar bears in Antarctica. My bad guys!

This really isn’t even a hard premise to screw up: rather than trying to paint Birchum as this all-powerful, never wrong superhuman, you make him the underdog; he’s trying to prove that he’s still relevant when the whole world seems like they’d happily leave him and his worldview in the previous century. Build him *wanting* a relationship with his wife and son, but feeling like they just don’t have anything left in common, and then here’s this liberal stereotype that embodies everything Birchum feels he rightfully deserves but sees Birchum as a friend and equal (kinda like what early season Simpsons did with Homer Simpson and Ned Flanders).
Alternatively, it could actually be even funnier to showcase Mr. Birchum and the leftist as the extreme versions of both sides of their respective political leanings; we often see that politics can get wildly out of hand from both extremes of the spectrum, so showcasing the two clashing ideologies could lend itself to a lot of comedy and drama.

But that’s what makes the book compelling is that Scarlett isn’t a good person, she uses all those bad traits and it propels the plot.

  • @bonedude1286
    @bonedude1286 Před měsícem +127

Everyone should get together and remake this show with Karpanzi as the true protagonist and Birchum the antagonist he truly is.
Edit: I decided to create my own take on how I would write it:
Mr. Birchum and Mr. Karpanzi are both teachers in woodwork and computer science respectively, both in the same school. Birchum is an middle-aged man who wants the world to be as simple as possible. Karpanzi is a late-teen who's supportive of everyone, despite being oppressed by the rest of the teachers.
Each episode would have the two take turns of being the voice of reason. Birchum-centric episodes would involve him being frustrated with the advanced, "woke" world, trying to force people into his worldview while Karpanzi teaches him to be more accepting of the new age. Meanwhile, Karpanzi-centric episodes would involve him trying to befriend the other teachers, often to extreme lengths, while Birchum tries to help the two get along.
And no, they would not be gay lovers. As funny as the idea is, people only make that joke because of the original show. My rewrite would try to find a balance between the two sides. They could be _friends,_ which would explain why they help each other, but making them lovers would lean too much towards the right.
The show would probably be about 8-10 episodes. With this setup, I don't see how this show could last more than 1 season. But hopefully, this version of the show would be... y'know, good.
This is obviously as simple of a plot synopsis as I can give. Not only would the characters have more depth, but so would many of the side characters (Birchum's family, the other teacher's, etc.), maybe even introduce some new characters, like a life partner for Karpanzi.

Maybe show him as someone who sees the world change around him so fast which makes him act frantic and spastic as he tries to keep this world away from his daughter which in turn creates a divide between them and the Karpanzi could be everything Birchum hates in the changing world that he feels will hurt his daughter and the story could be about him learning more about him and how he and this new world as a whole is not really his enemy.
Maybe there could be an episode about war vets where maybe he suffers from severe ptsd which contributes to that. Maybe there could be episode where he is called back into the army and the episode would focus on his daughter who despite being made uncomfortable by his outlandish behavior still is deeply worried for him and the episode could be about how she deals with it. And maybe you could also have some exploration of the Girls fears of maybe her dad hating her if she came out as something he despises and while she doesn't know if she is any of those things (because she is a kid) this Fear still lingers and that could be another focus point of an episode where Birchum has to consider such possibility and deal with that this future could happen and whether or not he should be afraid of it or embrace it.
Or maybe I take this garbage too seriously. Also didn't watch the show so no idea if that girl is actually his daughter or anything. I just assume. I ain't watching that.

maybe at the end of season one of the show, you can have karponzi get fired BY mr birchum or some thing like that and in season two you’ll have more area to explore other characters and the students and yada yada

As a conservative, I think the problem we have is that we think the best way to succeed is to relentlessly mock our opposition- ironically, leaving ourselves in a position to be mocked by the liberals. I’m not one of those nut jobs who declare anything featuring a female protagonist of color to be woke or shun anyone IRL who isn’t a straight white male like myself; I just take my time to do my own research and come to my own conclusions. I have tons of non-conservative friends and we get along fine because neither party really feels the need to bludgeon the other with politics in my area.
What conservative art needs are actual artists, not activists who think they’re artists. That’s something that those on my side say about the entertainment industry, but until we get our side of the industry right, then we can’t expect the other side to do the same. Write well, put in the funds necessary to support artists, and let them tell their stories rather than demanding they create echo chambers for those on either side- it shouldn’t be that hard.

So even though politics will always influence art and vice versa, I don't really want a successful "conservative counter culture." I don't view "conservative art" as a good thing. As long as either "side" is calling the shorts, creative freedom will suffer. Let art be art and politics be politics. Let them influence each other, but don't let them control each other.

Velma wants use Fred to be the villainous but the show accidentally made Fred a sympathetic character with depth. He was raised to the way his was at start(as his dad put his cigars on him and ridiculed him for being childish)
Later Fred has growth and he wants to be a better person.
21:21 Same with Velma. Like anything that other characters give Velma a lesson, she forgets about the lesson and does not grow as a person. It is the other way around. People learn from Velma and praise her.
It shows, no matter if The show is left wing or right wing, woke or anti-woke. If you make a show with spite, mean-spirited, Shallowness and to glorify your vision, like Mindy Kaling’ weird love and hate for rich white guys and Mr Birchum hate the Woke Agenda.

I think it could have been good if it was about an out of touch woodshop teacher learning that not everything progressives want is bad, and he could also instill some of the better qualities of conservative ideologies (ie. self reliance and good work ethic) into the next generation. I'm a hard leftie and even I can see that we can be hypocritical sometimes and often go to far in trying to be seen as better than our parents ( for example, white knighting women and minorities instead of letting them speak for themselves and getting mad at things they don't care about). I would love to see a show about different generations and ideologies finding balance. But the only way to do that is to acknowledge that Birchum is sometimes wrong.

You know, at first, I thought the only Parks and Recreation comparison I could make here is that Mr. Birchum himself was the poorest man's Ron Swanson, but now I realize this issue is WAY deeper than that. Mr. Birchum is Parks and Rec's polar opposite:
Parks and Recreation's main theme/message was that if we want to make the world a better place, we need to come together in spite of our differences. That's why all of the characters are so different and distinct from each other, why Leslie's friends deeply admire and respect her, but aren't afraid to call her out when they disagree with her, why Pawnee has so much lore behind it, why it never assigned one set of beliefs as being the right one, and why close-minded people were always seen as in the wrong. Because we're all living on the same planet, we might as well stop fighting and start working together.
Mr. Birchum, on the other hand, seems to preach the idea that things are supposed to be a certain way and anyone who disagrees with that way is wrong and should be ridiculed. That's why Mr. Birchum constantly gets away with being awful, why all the characters revolve around him and have little to nothing to help them stand out, why they constantly spit out pseudo-political takes and insults, why the show features almost no nuance, and specializes in only black and white thinking, because that's what it was created for. To tell people that everything was a lot better back in the days and people who disagree with you are wrong and you should never try to understand them, compromise with them, or be friends with them. They're your enemies and they always will be.
Parks and Rec teaches acceptance, cooperation, humility, and optimism. Mr. Birchum teaches hostility, superiority, exclusion, and close-mindedness. And I don't know about you, but I definitely prefer the former.

I didnt watch a single second of this show, but your recap of the episode where he remembers his old p.e. teacher fondly even though he was actually awful, really reminded me of the episode in bob's burgers where bob is basically forcing his kids to work through the summer because he remembers how much he enjoyed it when his dad made him do it. Only for the episode to end with bob realizing how sad his childhood was and deciding to let kids have their free summer. I love that episode and it sounds like this show wanted to do smth similar but missed the mark completely. I appologize for the long comment

It felt like they were trying to capture the success of conservative characters like Hank Hill without realizing why people liked those characters in the first place.
Hank was a conservative, sure, but he was also willing to change his mind. Even if he didn't always understand something, he was usually able to find something honorable in it. Not every episode ended with "Hank was 100% in the right this whole time" and that's what made the show interesting. Plus Hank was actually a good person with humanity at the core of his character, which is always nice if you want your audience to like your protagonist.

I remember the episode when Bill went out of his mind for a bit and thought he was his ex-wife. Hank realized he needed to have compassion & understanding when dealing with his friend instead of trying to yell the problem away.

That episode about him tricking the kids into building his deck is similar to the South Park DikinBaus episode. That worked because we got to enjoy Cartman’s antics while knowing he was clearly in the wrong and he ultimately lost in the end.

If you look closely at the screenshot Just Stop provided, the animation crew consists of mostly LGBT people when it comes from a company that despises LGBT rights. The reeks of hypocrisy doesn't go into the show itself.

It really says a lot when the Conservative Audiences, who this show was made for, don't have anything positive to say about and say it's a massive disappointment by how ridiculous it is.
If they want to do a show with that type of themes, King of the Hill is an example of how to do it right.

The only interesting thing I think came out of this show is this yaoi thing between Mr Birchum and the woke teacher (even if it's meant to be a joke). I mean, I get it. An ultra conservative that hates anything on the left side, being romantically involved with an ultra gay teacher who hates anything to do with right wing politics - now that's some Romeo and Juliet sh*t right there.

This whole show reminds me of that American Dad episode where (at the time homophobic) Stan made a play about Abe Lincoln and never realized that the whole thing was a gay love story

No, it reminds me of that one episode where I think Stan enters his kid into the Log Cabin Republicans thinking they’re just entirely Boy Scout-esque but then slowly finds out they’re all gay.
