  • This video was filmed a while ago - I just found out that while Greenbeetle was making his knife from the billet, there was a weld fault where the forge welds didn't take! Noooo! :( oh well! I'll make him a new billet as soon as possible!

    OH NO! The Damascus billet failed! Greenbeetle discovered a large area where the weld didn't take! Hopefully this doesn't happen on the next one I send him. Sorry for your wasted effort, Greenbeetle!

      @philipprigmore8723 Před 7 lety +2

      I completely agree, any mistake is also a new opportunity to learn. Everyone makes mistakes. Masters take those mistakes and learn from them. From all the videos I have watched of yours, you are a master. Never deny your degree of expertise, you (i know from watching) always admit your mistakes, but I have yet seen you repeat a mistake. BTW, the pattern was awesome.

      It's beautiful damascus, even more so in person than in this video believe it or not. I'm honored you would take time to send me another billet.

  • @AlecSteele
    @AlecSteele  Před 7 lety +30

    After reviewing the photos he sent me and the video again - the billet failed at the weld where I drove the fuller down into the material to suck down the pattern! Interesting! I think most guys cut the billet in half completely to better get in there and clean the welding surfaces. I'll do this next time to see if I get any better results! :)

    welding a bar stock handle onto the billet from the beginning makes it easy to control, especially when it starts to get thin and hard to grab with the tongs

  • @Conan568
    @Conan568 Před 7 lety +1

    You put the carbon steel on the outside, because it welds at a slightly lower temp.
    After the initial weld of the stack, you will only be welding carbon steel together from there on.
    I gives you a wee bit more time and temp range to weld at.
    If you have a weld failure, it's usually going to happen on the stack weld in the center area of the stack.
    You need to soak it really well, it's the most critical weld of the process..

    I'm continuously impressed by the quality of your work and drive to produce. It's a rare combination.
    If you're interested in a challenge and accessing a new viewer group, maybe try making a damascus tube for a rifle or shotgun barrel. Lots of guys have knowledge of reaming and rifling pre-drilled bar stock blanks, but seems there aren't any gunsmiths or blacksmiths that can make damascus barrels anymore. Spiral or straight seam welds were both used - I'd imagine a spiral weld would look better with damascus. As long as it's straight any imperfections can be reamed and filed out.
    You'd also be safe from any particular laws regarding firearms manufacture as the tube isn't considered a firearms part in any country until reamed, rifled and fitted with a breech plug. If it was finished in North America - Canada especially, there are no laws regarding proofing, that would require special consideration like in the UK.
    Anyways, as always I enjoyed the video.

    • @AlecSteele
      @AlecSteele  Před 7 lety

      +H Wal. I absolutely love the idea! I think it would be a wonderful experiment. So I was completely within all interpretations of the law - if I were to do it I would leave a portion of the barrel blocked however!

    So, given where you believe it failed, would the solution be to, once you have run the fuller in, cut the two layers completely apart, forge the two pieces flat, clean, stack and then weld? Or possibly just chemically clean out the fuller area and then flux it as soon as it is hot enough for the flux to stick, to forge the gap closed?

    • @albertrasch4793
      @albertrasch4793 Před 7 lety

      It's a fairly common issue. Generally a well fluxed fold is adequate. But as in all things in life, it becomes easier as you gain experience! But either solution would work.

      Plus I thought exactly the same when Walter Sorrells participated in it (also a youtuber knifemaker, smart and experienced) S3E14
      One of the difficulties of the challange is controlling your heat treatment in an unknown forge, that is also brightly lit, so the cameras can get good shots. Notice how Alec keeps his workshop dim, allowing him to more accurately tell the temperature of his steel. Also oftentime there's some sort of mistery steel involved, which is a big unknown.
