Back in the mid-70's, chatting with Billy just after he'd finished a gig at The Orange Monkey in Rochester, NY, he told us that after gigs, he goes home, puts on his headphones and plays for another 2 hours. Incredible dedication.

  • @rockhard2654

growing up in buffalo in the seventies you could not go out WITHOUT seeing this guy play
they played everywhere the barrel head, uncle sams, bullwinkles, stage one, salty dog,the high school dance, the local drive in, various parking lots, you just kinda grew up with him. he was like the wall paper.this is back in the days when RUSH would come down from toronto once in a while too, the whole town was totally spoiled as far as bass playing went
then you'd go out to see the famous bands at the aud and say to yourself
"this is supposed to impress me?"
you could tell the bass players in famous bands would be looking out at the audience and be thinking "nobody seems to be amazed" they think im the shit in new york city
    these people must be rubes"
then they would be told the guy around the corner in the local dive blows you away.
then the next time they where in town you could see the sadness in their eyes
"buffalo, these people cant be impressed" i remember one time, a VERY HIGHLY RESPECTED bass player who was playing with pat metheny, came to the end of his bass solo at the salty dog to be met with.........CRICKETS!.... literally ZERO applause, painful to watch....he was clearly shaken, the same thing happened to Scott Thunes, with zappa, i can mention his name
because he was clearly NOT shaken... he simply steped to the mic and said.. "i know, i know"
    that was a cool move
this went on for what seemed like years and years and you'd think "why isn't he world famous yet?"it really got to the point of total ridiculousness but he got to where he belonged eventually

This was a great interview with Billy. He is also a true innovator and inspire me, as a drummer. I love watching him perform and also own a few of his instructional dvds. I recall driving as a young teen with my musician buddies, across the Niagara river from Canada to go see Talus, one of the local bands that Billy played in, typically at some dodgy rock club in Buffalo, NY. He was a bass phenomenon even then, and had the biggest bass rig of the day- larger than some PA systems of the time, and a killer sound... and could play like a MOFO back even then. What a pleasure to hear such articulate, informative and heartfelt discussion about the music itself, playing, inspirations, perceptions, learning, listening...all the important stuff. Great series, Dom. Do more please. A fan....and guitarist/ musician.

Towards the end Dom says "what would you say to the kids watching this?" I really hope that is true, that younger musicians don't glean over this because its not a flashy interview on the surface. Dom asks great questions and Billys answers dive much deeper then the instrument he plays. Im off to watch a few more of Dom's interviews, I like his style.

One of the WORST things they did to music was pigeon holing everything! I remember hearing Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra, Peter, Paul and Mary, George Jones, Liberace, Sonny & Cher, Percy Faith and his Orchestra, The Four Tops, Percy Sledge, The Grateful Dead, Donovan, The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline and Buck Owen's all on the SAME STATION!!! They have TAUGHT people to ONLY like a VERY Narrow slice of life in music! As a working Musician, all of my life, my LOVE for ALL genre's of music guaranteed me work. I could play it ALL, and sincerely ENJOYED it ALL. Today, alot of young players only KNOW about one style, never HEARD much of what's there to be enjoyed. Imagine if Movie Theaters only showed ONE kind of Movie.....nothing but War Movies, or NOTHING but Horror Movies. What a narrow minded bunch of people that would develop and then cater to. If you are a victim of the musical pigeon-holing, do yourself a HUGE favor and PURPOSELY look into and listen to EVERYTHING you possibly can! You'll be very glad you did, as what you can enjoy increases EXPONENTIALLY!

Is Billy in free masonry illumanti he is using the triangle eye of providence hand symbol throughout entire interview. Most famous musicians are in the craft I wondered why he was selected and not other members of Talas. He is talented but he had some help and was promoted groomed. I enjoy his music but I'm getting more turned off with all these musicians because of the hidden agenda and cult
