- This touching, globe-trotting documentary travels from Kenya to Patagonia, Morocco and India to show the incredible physical obstacles that some children must face every day simply to get to the classroom on time.
In many parts of the world, getting to school is a challenge in itself, and this globetrotting documentary shows us what some young people must face simply to make it to the classroom. In Kenya, Jackson and his sister cross paths with dangerous elephants; in Patagonia, Carlito and his little sister ride a horse over 18 kilometres each way through treacherous terrain; in Morocco, Zahira and her friends trek across mountains and even resort to hitchhiking to get to class on time; and in India, Samuel is pushed through swamplands in a homemade wheelchair by his younger brothers. Touching and inspiring, On the Way to School celebrates the strength, determination and courage of these young students willing to brave great obstacles in order to pursue their education.

This documentary on netflix made me ashamed of myself ,how i use to complain and waste the opportunities i had. I was in tears when samuel said those words about life 'We come into this world with nothing. We leave it with nothing. We must follow that logic . After watching this I promise myself that I will do something for kids who are struggling to get proper education. Wake Up Indian corrupted politicians ,stop saving money in swiss banks which you never use. Save these kids.
I now appreciate what I have more. God bless these children and I hope they get what they deserve in life.
OMG, I'm in tears just watching the trailer. I'm not naive about what goes on around the world but these children and their circumstances are very touching. They and their parents really value education and do what it takes to get it.
I have no words to express how Amazing and Inspiring this documentary is to me. I feel sorry for my lazy and spoiled life.
I watched this last night on Netflix, and I absolutely loved it. The documentary reminded me of my life and how lucky I am to be where I am today. I want to be more involved and help others in need as well. These kids are truly inspirational and I think the rest of the world can really learn from them. Education should never be taken for granted. Children here (in Canada) all have transportation to schools, either by school buses, public transportation, or their own vehicles.
I am looking for an update on the children in the documentary, my heart really goes out to them and I wish them all the successes and joy in this world. I really want to know how they're doing, I'm so happy that I got to share a piece of their everyday life. Wow.
Amen! Very well said! As a Middle Eastern migrant who moved to the USA to chase the American dream at a very young age, my goal is to be successful someday and help out other less fortunate people like these wonderful children. There are barriers in life and I know for certain these kids will become successful some day
Good reminder that some of us are very lucky - and should appreciate more.
THIS has to be one of the most profound and moving documentaries about the struggle of children to get an education. It is a MUST-SEE for any spoiled western-hemisphere children who constantly complain (like my own did until this film changed their attitude to one of gratitude) that they hate going to school and the school is "stupid" or a "waste of time."
This is a great story to show our kids to be thankful for what we have. God bless all the kids around the world that have to struggle to get to school!!
I was so glad to see that New Yorkers brought their children to the Quad Cinema to see the world. The film is a terrific achievement.
This is the type of documentary they should show at school
Yes absolutely!!
+yesi rivera They showed this to me last week and we are making a response paper on it.
they showed us the trailer!! and after that day I go in CZcams and watching it and thanking God for everything he gave me !!
Same
They show that documentary at my school and some students cried
I would never have thought a 13 year old could inspire a grown adult. But that's what these children have done for me. An amazing film and told as it should be - simply, without proselytizing, which can be such a turn-off at times.
My new favorite movie! I'm very impressed with the example that were set in this movie. We all get to live like these children do, full of dreams, hope, encouragement, open to difference, positive and energetic attitudes..etc. I'm fortunate to be able to assist and serve children here in America that deserve assistance with their path of knowledge. It's a marvelous thing to watch them grow and learn.
Saw this doc at The Academy of Music, Northampton during school break week. So inspiring! A must see. The theater was packed with middle schoolers & their parents. Wide screening blew us all away. Thanks
This film touch my heart , how lucky our kids are, God Bless these kids how courageous they are!
my class is studying this God bless these kids
I saw this documentary in Netflix and I was crying. we take things for granted and don't appreciated what we have and we complaint about a lot of things. my kids watch the movie with me so they can understand how easy life if for them and to learn to appreciate life and be considered on other things that they don't need and appreciate other people and their cultures. As a mother these kids parents also taught me how they blessed their kids before leaving their homes something that maybe many of us don't do with our kids. I relearn again about it, because my parents used to bless me and brither and sisters and yet I stopped doing that with my kids, how awful we can be as humans having it all, is to be ashamed of ourselves. The little kids from Africa make cried a lot and they have take that journey every day just to learn without knowing that they could get hurt by the elephants. God bless them and protect them. the little kids from India they also were so amazing they didn't complaint a bit having to carry their big brother around. all the kids in this movie are heroes and I appreciate them as good citizens for in our world. Thanks for making films like this one to remind us how easy we have it. May God bless all the people around the world and stop racism and open the hearts from those that could help financially and have more possibilities to help the poor around the world.
Amazing documentary. I am especially touched by the 2 brothers who pull their oldest brother in a old self-made wheelchair thru unpaved roads, river and crazy Indian traffic to school (daily!) - all with a sense of love and responsibility. Not a word of complaint (at least on video). What a definition of Christian brotherly love. Must-watch TV !
We come into this world with nothing.
We leave it with nothing.
We must follow that logic.
Samuel...
Cesar Mendoza Such wise words coming from a child so young. I couldn't believe it when he said that.
watched this for the first time yesterday and I just said how kids complain that they have to walk to the bus stop but have these kids are walking hours. the girls have to walk four hours to get to school. Jackson and his sister take what's supposed to be 2 hours can take longer because they have to make detours to protect their lives. Samuel and his brothers, I'm amazed by his brothers who struggle of getting their brother (Samuel) to school all the time with obstacles in the way it's just heartbreaking. I've been to other countries Haiti, Romania, Nicaragua, Senegal. I've seen them up close. drinking, showering, and washing clothes in dirty water. not having clothes at all. not knowing when they're gonna eat next, but seeing this was different. this was a new eye opener.
I've been sharing this beautiful film as much as possible.
Doesnt only make you appreciate what you have but also gives you an inside of different cultures and people.
+Gerardo Maldonado yes I agree, that will make us more tolerent and more thankful
These children have such beautiful souls, never take anything for granted!
I just finished watching this movie on Netflix. It has left me in tears. What a touching movie. Masterful direction and those kids really pulled my heartstrings. Not a word of complaint. They need to study was so great. They must show this movie in schools in North America who complain so much all the time. The kids in the movie were not discouraged with so many obstacles in their path. A must watch.
Wonderful wonderful kids and there willing to seek education. may there dream come true. Make me cry but worth it.
My wife watched this at the Mill Valley Film Festival a few days ago and can't stop talking about it. This movie should be mandatory for every school age children in the US. We had our local Walk to School day yesterday and many parents drive most of the way to school, park on my street, walk their kids to school and then drive home.
Parenting... something the West is getting totally wrong!!! These children in this video are worth a million of most of our pampered, spoilt, bratty kids here. They are brave, dedicated, humble, honest, hard working and never complain even though they have it so much worse than us. Our kids get on the bus to go two stops to school - two small children in this documentary have to navigate across African plains with lions, hyenas and elephants in it. The disabled boy gets carried to school by his friends. The young African boy speaks amazing English - something a lot of US can't even do! I have so much respect for these children, and if our kids were more like them, I wouldn't dislike kids so much!!!
My son (11) watched this movie at school yesterday and says we have to watch it.
I am so deeply moved by those children.
This video make me more greatful, God bless these courageous children
This film celebrates children and their intense desire to learn like no other. A story that is as beautiful and inspiring as it is poignant.
What an amazing documentary!! those spoiled kids in North America need to see this..I sat my 2 boys down 7 and 5 and they were glued to the TV. I narrated as we watched..it's such an eye opener...people need to see this ..
This was amazing and incredibly inspiring ! I watched it with my 4 yr old and he loved it too. I hope they do a follow up documentary on they are doing when they are all grown amazing.
Just watched this with my 10 year old son. All American children need to watch this & get a quick view into how other children live on our planet. Great movie
We watched this at school today its nice too see that we kids can actually fight for what we want if we want to
wow I'm extremely grateful seeing that most of us have it so easy, beautiful film..
beautiful documentary. be thankful for what you have people.
We absolutely loved this documentary.
For one thing, those kids would not have an obesity problem with that kind of work out.
What a beautiful documentary, great stories and amazing pictures
These kids have taught us something by going to their schools! Amazing documentary!!
I watched this amazing and touching documentary in Singapore airlines, my journey to Jakarta last year. I think other kids who waste their time not to go to school have to watch this movie and learn from them.
I just saw this with whole school and it was beyond amazing!
I thought I walked for a long time in school (40 mins) lol, looking at these children running away from dangerous animals risking there lives to go to school. Wow.
God bless them.
This was such a great documentary. It was a real eye opener .
Brilliant documentary, it made me realise that the life we think is hard is much, much worse in other parts of the world, the kids realise they need an education to make money later in life and their determination will enable them to reach their goals
I am definitely looking forward to show this to my kids as sometimes they don't appreciate what they have,
It is very inspiring and specially the struggle they do everyday just get theirselves into school for the education to stand in this world.
God bless them all and make their ways easy as much as possible like He made everything easy for us.
Thanks to Allah and forgive us for being selfish many times in our lives for complaining about lil minor things.
Love this documentary watched it with my kids.
Incredibly poignant stories! Will move you to deep reflection and gratitude. A must-see for everyone and their kids.
I recommend this to all students so that they may be grateful for all that they have.
The camera angles and all the shots were so beautiful I would really want to see the behind the scenes, does anyone know where I can watch the BTS?
I always complained about the 10 minutes bus ride to school cause I didn't like the kids on my bus. Talk about first world problems.....
I recommend this excellent film to my college students in my Ethnic identity and cultural awareness in children and families class. Must see!
Just make a word document with a table that has four rows-one for each of the four groups of children's situation-Label them "Siblings from Kenya, Brothers from India, Girls from Morrocco, and Siblings from Argentina." Label the columns something like: Reasons these children Want an Education, Obstacles in Home Life to Education, Mode of Transportation to School, Risks in Landscape/Immoral People w/Bad Intentions/Dangerous Wildlife On Way, and My own personal thoughts (where your students can write down their own ideas)-and let your students fill in this matrix as they watch the film. You might even add a row for your students to fill out their own data for the same columns to compare and contrast the struggles of these children with their own risks and struggles to getting an education-they will certainly see how much better they have than these youngsters. Then, follow up with a class discussion and have them write a short paper describing their (these children's) struggle for education and on what getting an education means to them (your students).
...what an amazing story of these courageous children! we can all learn from these remarkable human beings! I would love to know any updates since the filming if anyone out there knows of any?
I just watched it and tears were coming from my face. I had to call my children and tell them to come and watch with me. It was such an inspiration
We watched this in school and I almost cried
Sorry, I did cry
How can I find a copy of this video to show to my spoiled American students who complained about walking 300 ft from the parking lot to the classroom? Please, somebody point a way!
It's on Netflix, perhaps you can get a subscription and show it to them
Yeah, you could get chromecast and show them.
Ingping Howe Please do show them. Tie them to their chairs if you have to... or maybe not, they and their self-important parents would either beat you up or sue the school!!???
I am so grateful for what I have and for what I have been through, and even though I live in a develop country now it was not easy before, I will never forget what is like to be born in a 3rd world country. I must teach my children this reality of struggle in life and not to take anything for granted, this must be a constant reminder for all of us, God bless humanity and for adapting to extreme situation for survival.
Anyone know how to reach the little boy from India in the wheelchair, it broke my heart to see it literally falling apart on his way to school!
I myself don't know. Try contacting the filmmaker. God help you find him.
very emotional and inspiring.
This is life for most of the world. Adversity, poverty, daily struggles just to live. But filled with dignity, self-discipline and daily toil.
What a condemnation of the spoiled malcontents in industrial nations.
Do humanitarian works and stop complaining, burning flags, protesting, looting and vandalizing. Build up rather than tear down. Or trade places with someone from a third world so they will not squander the gift you were blessed with. The gift of freedom, safety and opportunity.
The name of the song: Laurent Ferlet - La chevauchée de Carlito
Watching this now. 😭😭😭😭
Be proud now to have good transport to school...
Hello, I am an ESL teacher for a local primary school in Jakarta Indonesia. This term my students and I are discussing about transportation and its challenge. This trailer has been a suitable way in introducing the problem and encouraging my students to critically think and share how to solve the problem (in their point of views). We do hope that we would be able to watch the complete version of the movie. If anyone would like to share the link of the movie? Or anyone can show me how to get the link, it will be very helpful, and we really do appreciate it. Thank you before hand. :)
Please!!! If someone can help me to find this kids I would like to help Gabriel desperate for help them!!!
