Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on CZcams, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on CZcams. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on CZcams, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

Nope, her Mom doesn't want Sylvia to hear who's on the line so pretends it was someone else.

  • @amyk9175

The mother said “please call again” as if she were talking to someone other than the author of the song. It was a polite way to end phone conversations back in the day. She didn’t want to tip off Sylvia as to the true nature of the call.

Wow what a fun flash from the past. Thy also did "Cover of the Rolling Stone", which was a bigger hit, but this was everywhere at one time. Let's go see how you like it...
May Sylvia, your mother rest in peace. Beautiful name, as is Avery, actually. Shel Silverstein wrote "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and many other great children book classics. Not sure if it is the same Shel. They're big rock singers, they got golden fingers, and they're loved everywhere they go. "Cover of the Rolling Stone" is worth your time and show. Huge hit.

Great rock band from the 70's-80's. They had lots of hit songs such as "The Cover Of Rolling Stone", "Only Sixteen", "A Little Bit More", "Sharing The Night Together", "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman", "Better Love Next Time", "Sexy Eyes" etc.

I was very little when this song came out, but I would just cry when it came on the radio. I always assumed the song ends with Sylvia never knowing her ex-boyfriend called, and she catches her scheduled train. The mother tells the caller, “Please call back again,” but she doesn’t mean it. She never told Sylvia that he called.
The band is formed in New Jersey, but they do have some Southern roots. Ray Sawyer (man with eye patch) is from Alabama.

Dr. Hook and The Medicine Show, one of the best band names ever, and a real throwback to the 1970's, and the days, daze, of my youth. Their biggest hit was "Cover Of The Rolling Stone", but "Sylvia's Mother" was very big at the time as well.

One of the best harmonizing bands. I love their songs that never got radio play. Funny story my oldest sister got a postcard from one of the band members and also, with permission from my mom, she and her friends went driving around with some of the band members to show them our city.

I love Dr. Hook! Carrie Me, Carrie, If I'd Only Come and Gone, Freaking at the Freaker's Ball, Turn on the World, I Can't Touch the Sun, Queen of the Silver Dollar, these guys had a ton of hits. Sloppy Seconds is my favorite of their albums, every song is amazing! I even saw them in concert! There is an interview somewhere with the actual Sylvia's actual mother. She was Shel Silverstein's (who wrote the song) girlfriend.

  • @jollyrodgers7272

This was such a tear-jerker, and based on a true story that happened to Shel Silverstein, the songwriter. NO! Mrs. Avery is covering up who's on the line by sayin' "thank you for calling, and sir won't you call back again..." He substituted 'Galveston' in place of Mexico, and since she settled in Mexico City, it's clear Shel's heartache was not assuaged. Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show could handle about any genre, even Disco, and they changed to just "Dr. Hook". Try WHEN YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN and SEXY EYES by Dr. Hook. Yes, they did ON THE COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE, which actually got 3 of them caricatured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which is a fun little song, too.

It's a real weepy, written almost to send up tear jerkers. Ray Sawyer is the guy with the eye patch, he died a couple of years back. Dennis Locoriere (?) Is the bearded guy singing. These two did most of the vocals on their hits. Other hits include A little bit more, and when you're in love with a beautiful woman. None of their other stuff has the emotional angst of this one though.
It's fairly obvious that the relationship is dead in the water and nothing is going to come of it. Mrs. Avery prevents any conciliation.
The real Sylvia was tracked down not long ago and confirmed the story. Her marriage to the guy she was heading off to, eventually ended in divorce and she returned to New Jersey. So many might have beens.
Great song, reminds me of teenage broken hearts about the time it was out.

To me it sounds like Sylvia’s mother told her stalker exactly where and when to find her. 🤦‍♀
Of course, we didn’t think that way back when this was popular. I did watch a CZcams video showing an old interview with Sylvia’s mother, telling her side of the story. If I remember correctly she did have a conversation with him later. She seemed like a kind woman who cared about him but knew he wasn’t right for her daughter. There’s also an interview with Sylvia herself on CZcams.
