Filipinos have a few unique techniques for doing their laundry! I had a few clothes that needed to be washed and so I went to a Barangay on the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao. All of a sudden I found myself on a "Laba Adventure"!
A little bit of scrub scrub...
A little bit of twist twist...
A little bit of smash smash...
and a whole lot of "chika-chika/chis-mis"...
This is my experience washing my clothing "Filipino Style". Oh... and don't be grossed out by the colour of the water. It is actually very clean :)

During my childhood in the 60's and 70's the waters in the river were clear and pure. They flow over stones and pebbles and the rivers are so wide that we don't have to be in line to use the water that already passed through a previous user. Hand Powered jetmatic pump became plenty in the early 70's and the people in my barrio stopped washing in rivers.

When I was a kid, people in my dad's baryo would go to the town's just for laundry and also to store water using clay pots, plastic gallons, timba or bamboos. The waters are clean as it is a mountain spring and they place bamboo as pipes and place it at every springs.

I remember when my parents also wash our clothes in the river while me, my brother and my cousins play and swim. My father used to put me also in our big batya or planggana (same as yours) and then pull me while floating in the water.... it's like you are in a tiny moving boat. Awe, I miss those times.

That must be in some remote part of the Philippines. I dont remember anyone washing their laundry like that. We had indoor running water and that was a long time ago. But sun and wind dried laundry on clothesline are the best. It smells really good.
