World premiere play written and directed by John Patrick Shanley
with Annika Boras, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Sean Leonard,
Chris McGarry, David Potters
Prodigal Son is a passionate, explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (of Tony, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize fame). A 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He’s violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members (Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard and Chris McGarry) wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?
The world premiere of Prodigal Son marks another exciting step forward in the collaboration between Manhattan Theatre Club and this visceral New York playwright (Doubt, Outside Mullingar).

i literally gasped when i read this. YOU'RE RIGHT. I NEED HIM AS HOLDEN NOW :O
YES
YEEESSSSS!!
That's exactly what many critics said about Elliott: that he was parading his education.
I can understand that, though I love Eliot to death. On the opposite side of the spectrum, you have a poet like William Carlos Williams, who was Eliot's contemporary, who vowed to stay away from things like Greek and Latin, and opted to write in a "common vernacular" that anybody could understand. I love Williams as well, but it's so startling to see the contrast between the two. :)
Elliot was concerned with using history to determine the present, and he said that without his predecessors, he wouldn’t have been able to adequately speak to the disillusioned post-war generation. The wasteland is a masterpiece, but just reading it isn’t enough, it has to be analysed to death unfortunately
We need Timmy and Leo in the same movie .......

1 dislike is mr hoffman
This is just a simple play and the performance is okay. Time will tell, if this boy becomes a decent actor. Being in a movie will be the real test of his ability. Let me know if he "makes it big".
It’s timothee chalamet
this is sarcasm right? you wrote this 8 months ago. he was already nominated for an oscar and the golden globe
I hate ts eliot too
Can you imagine a Jew, acting as the Prodigal Son, which is a very prominent character in the Christian Bible!
Gee. Jesus was a Jew.
timothee is jewish and french.
I don't think he's a Jew. His father is a French Catholic, but probably non-practising. His mother is New York Jewish, but probably non-practising. I don't think he identifies as Jewish.
@R. Tolmach I understand that Jews are both a religion and a race. On the former point, what you said about the "values of Torah", etc, doesn't apply here, because how do you know that the boy didn't follow his Catholic father's traditions instead of his mother's? Even if he was closer to his mother, that still doesn't mean he was raised with the Torah. On the latter point, yes, he is racially half-Jewish, agreed. But what if he has a child with a Gentile who will be a quarter-Jewish, and a grandchild who is an eighth Jewish? At some point, you would have to leave it up to the individual to label himself racially, too. Many people write "mixed race" on forms.
@R. Tolmach Thanks for all that information! I didn't know Hebrews were matrilineal. I can see all those values in common between him and Hebrews in general. However, I don't see where I have made any stereotypical claim about the Hebrew personality, nor where I said he can't be a Hebrew because his personality doesn't match. (Over-sensitivity may also be a Hebrew trait, then.) I said he may not be one because of the fact his father is a French Catholic. I'm sure his father wouldn't have allowed his son to be circumcised, for instance, as most European males don't do that. Other traditions, I don't know. Maybe he follows his mother more, as you say. That's perfectly possible.
