- In this video I get a rare chance to take a look inside the General Motors Heritage Center, where GM keeps some of its most rare and exclusive cars, like the 1938 Buick Y-Job, the 1951 LeSabre concept car and various experimental Corvettes, as well as many other unique and quirky cars.

I am so proud to work for General Motors. I grew up just a mile or so from the GM Tech Center in Warren MI and being able to work there a fulfillment of a childhood dream!

And the same company that engineering sucks so bad they wait for the completion to innovate a new design then copy it? Like they did for the mid engine mid-life crisis GM fanboys fondle themselves to?
It truly amazes me that every single German OEM has a spectacular museum yet no US car company has one that is open to the public. Chrysler had a small museum in Auburn Hills but that was closed many years ago. The Henry Ford-Greenfield Village is an independent operation although the historic association with Ford is obvious. Thanks for the tour!
Encore, encore! I was so sorry to see this video end, I loved every car, every piece of info and trivia you gave us about them. If you have more footage from this amazing museum I think a lot of us would love a second (or third, fourth...) video!

Oh wow - you're so lucky to have gotten in there, and thanks so much for filming some of it for us! The Buick Y-job has long been one of my favourite cars of all time. It's just so gorgeous - and not overly styled. Everything's "just right".

I’ve been in there with my father 2 times now at the Heritage Center. My dad has a C7 Corvette and is part of a group on Facebook so it’s a treat when we go there. They do alternate the cars every now and then. Thanks for sharing!
Edit: 3:37 I’ve only seen that ‘59 Electra once there as an example for them changing the vehicles. They might be moving facilities out of Warren so hopefully the new place is nice. So many rare cars there! My second favorite in Michigan, The Gilmore near Kalamazoo is a crazy museum if you get the chance.
I always wondered how to get in there..why have such an awesome place if only very few ever get to see it 😔
@@Jag-leaper I think it is possible for the public to see it’s just very, very rare. They are moving to Grand Blanc so make sure you check out their schedule, who knows if they will have a grand reopening. All I know is when I go with my my dad, the owners of the club organize it and then everyone that goes has to donate to keep the cars as stunning as they look. I hope that helps.

Incredible! What a fabulous place to visit, and I am amazed you were given access. Its a testament to how popular your CZcams channel is becoming, congratulations! I could spend days wandering around such a collection, such a pity the public are not allowed to visit (but completely understandable). Very enjoyable video, I hope there is a part 2 planned.
Buddy, your videos are, hands down, at the top of my list. And you've appeared in videos produced by my other top guy! Tremendous work and thank you.
That collection is, without intending to, a perfect metaphor for a consistent failing of GM over the decades: "Here is an incredibly cool car. You can't have it." I am not much of a car buff, but even I am amazed at the ability of GM to tease the car buying public with amazing concept possibilities and then produce turgid, uninspiring designs for sale.

You really, REALLY need to go to the Duncan Imports warehouse in Christiansburg, VA . Aside from a ridiculous amount of JDM vehicles for sale, they have essentially one of everything in terms of US and European vehicles in the private collection, all open to the public.
I got my 93 Suzuki Cappuccino from there. It's the most fun on 4 wheels I've ever had.
The Buick Y looks like it has some Cord style a great look.
The GNX is a beautiful car in person. I believe it is the very first production number.
Well, now Ed, we're really talking. What a superb and delicious lineup of cars! Ed's Auto Reviews, Premium Edition. The LeSabre cyclops was amazing. When that oval plate rotated around, I just about lost my marbles. I have never, ever seen a critique and evaluation of the auto industry as erudite, as fascinating and as intelligent as yours.
Great presentation! Out of all of the examples shown, probably the most mind blowing for me was the 80's Corvette with displays on the inside of the doors. Talk about thinking outside the box.
That Buick Silver Arrow may well be my favourite car design ever.

My family was an Oldsmobile family - mom drove a 75-76 CustomCruiser wagon and dad had a same era 98 Regency Sedan… gotta love that tufted pillow upholstery

Thank you so much Ed! My first view of the Pegasus. As Pontiac is my by far favorite brand and the Firebird and ta my favorite car EVER I am surprised I never saw or heard of it. Didn't know about the Electrovair either. Maybe now I've seen all that gm has ever done, maybe not but I am surely closer to that goal after seeing this video. Again ty I really love your vids. GM should have this open to the public we have a right to it, even more since the bailout we got nothing but no more Pontiacs from!

As usual, another fantastic video! Thank you for including the Electrovair II, the Astro 1, and the Rampside pickup! Please note that the Greenbrier was the window van version of the Corvair 95. The pickup was just a Rampside. Not mentioned was the Loadside pickup, which was just about the most useless vehicle on earth. No ramp, no opening of any kind on the sides, and with the engine in the back, very difficult to load anything in the middle. Can't wait for the next installment! Please let there be more...

10:08 the Station Wagon. I almost bought one of these, a '76 Pontiac Catalina Safari with no engine inside and with a missing seat from 2nd row and with a damaged doorpanel in it, once upon a time eaten by a dog, etc. Unfortunately when I had arrived with the agreed amount to buy that beauty, the owner made up his mind. So I finally bought a Chevrolet Trans Sport.

I'm usually the last to know but I have never seen or heard of this museum before. Very nice.
The GM Heritage Center is great- for nothing else than it's such a normal place to see such extraordinary automobiles . The cars aren't on a pedestal, nor behind glass or Roped off: They are... Just there. You are standing next to it.
These cars are what the PAST thought our FUTURE would look like, and for a few moments you get to look at them not as 'far fetched dreams of the automakers', but as real cars, parked where you can reach out and grab the handle (not that you'd lay a finger on these handcrafted art pieces).
All of these cars (excluding the pre-tech center models) are built in Warren Mich, just south of this site by a few miles. The original facility remains operational, with people creating the vision of our automotive future: Artists put pen to pad and clay to model. UAW Skilled Trades making forms, panels, and paints from scratch to make the future. I'm glad to say I get to work with the GM Design Teams daily and I will always be proud to see GM Heritage cars.
Thank you, Ed. I loved seeing the Olds Limited and the proto Corvettes. Look on the cutting room floor and see if you can piece together another episode, please.

Ford was at the RenCen for years prior to GM. My mom worked for Ford there in the late 70s early 80s.
In 1968, when GM, opened the GM building in NYC ( 5 Avenue & 59 Street) the entire lobby had GM automobiles in it, the building takes up an entire city block.I remember, it was awesome !!
great video. I remember when I was a child my older sister had her driver's license at 16 years old. I grew up in Canada and at the time we had very big cars. In the 1980s. she had a very big station wagon. Let me just say those cars were built tough. And could hold a lot of stuff. The only thing that the problem was was the gas mileage.
Such a place whatever the manufacturer can only be called an automotive walhala!

That must have been a walk in automotive heaven! And one heck of an educational visit. History, styling, concepts, so much to take in! Didn't see it in the video, but was there a 1955 nomad wagon with corvette nose there? Also really curious about that white 1963-64 chevy nova there..
Ed, good guy, another great "insider's" video about American cars, especially my favorite 50's and 60's General Motors brands! And thanks for the humor about how differently Americans and Europeans pronounce that very light metal, spelled here in North American English "aluminum" (ah-loo-min-um)!
I think I like the Firebird II as its the car that is on the Harley J Earl trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Daytona 500
Edit: I also wish that the GM Heritage Center was open to the public, like it seems like it's one of the holy grails of automotive history... Also I find GMs history of toying with electric vehicles interesting, as the electricvair, the GM EV-1, Chevrolet Volt and now vehicles like the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq (or however you spell it), Chevrolet Bolt
Edit 2: I wish that the C8 Corvette wasn't called the Stingray and was called the Zora or the Duntov as a tribute to the man who made it his life's mission to make the mid-engine Corvette a reality

GM rarely gets things right nowadays. But this is something other companies have not done that makes me happy! A museum for rare and one of a kind gm cars! Makes me so happy to see these cars and trucks preserved!

Well done, Ed. First there was Doug and Hoovie and now there's Adam and Ed. There's something going on in the world of CZcams auto enthusiast channels that feels maybe a just a little incestuous. That was an interesting look at a place none of us can get into from the perspective of an inquisitive Dutch tourist with the wherewithal to pull it off. Impressive.
I have owned five corvairs starting from 1960 to 65 regularly took the engines out and worked on them

Ok so the Buick Y is literally the sexiest vehicle I have ever seen.
This would be such a fun road trip. I gave a passion for aircraft as well, so would pad out my journey with some additional stops.

Very interesting. The Y-Job is like a glimpse into the future. For the most part it has all the lines of the post war GM lineup.
One thing I will point out about those mid 70's wagons was that since they were so huge, there was plenty of room to take your date into the back, if you catch my drift.
Early 70's were wider
Nice to see some love for the Corvair. Misunderstood and not helped by Ralph Nader's book Unsafe At Any Speed, which some independent studies found to be inaccurate about the Corvair. Novice drivers were just not use to a rear engine car with more than 50hp. I've been to a wrecking yard full of bent Porsches in California that proves the point.
Even Mercedes was using swing axles at that time.
This is the 1st time I have ever seen the Pontiac Ferraribird..

A million thanks for this video, Ed. Ive always been fascinated by concept cars. Funny enough, my first car was a Chevy Vega, although mine was the last year of production (1977). I swapped out the original 4 banger for a mildly modified 327 V-8 that I rebuilt in high school auto shop class.

Next time you come to the US, check out the Harold Warp car museum in Minden Nebraska. Out of the way in the middle of no where but worth it.
