  • Danny is supervising operations. Mueller maul 5kg (11lbs) from Austria working alongside a recently acquired heavier item from Poland which weighs 6kg (13.2lbs). Both do an excellent job on knotty sitka spruce, which can be difficult to work on. Beech handle on the bigger maul.

I like your splitting cage, and smart idea to put a scrap wedge in the split with the stuck maul.

Never seen anybody use such a heavy maul, most i use is 3kg or occasionally a 7kg sledge hammer with wedges. May have to try one out, seems to work well. I like your chopping block, reminds me of a boxing ring

The spruce here can be really dirty stuff to split with the knots and dead branches, especially on the bigger rounds. Strange as it may seem, these heavy implements make the job easier.

Ben, I got this address directly from the Muller company, a few years ago, giving the details of a company in Carlisle that carry their products. Check their website. I'm sure that if you ring their number, they should be able to help you. Be specific about what you want. The Muller catalogue number for the 5kg maul with ash handle is 0257 50; and the hickory handled item is 0259 50.
