  • The ALC-42 is a brand new, state of the art locomotive design built by Siemens Mobility in Sacramento, California. Amtrak has purchased 75 of these locomotives, which are part of the Charger diesel-electric locomotive series, to replace P40 and P42DC units that were built in the mid 1990s. I was invited by Siemens Mobility and Amtrak to document the completion of the first new locomotive, Amtrak number 300, and explore the assembly process for these highly advanced machines at their Sacramento manufacturing facility. In this video, we talk with Armin Kick of Siemens Mobility as well as Roger Harris and Scot Naparstek of Amtrak about these locomotives and how they will improve Amtrak service in the years ahead.

The Siemens Charger is absolutely taking North America by storm. Not only has every intercity operator in Canada and the US purchased a large number of them (Brightline, Amtrak States, Amtrak Long-Distance and VIA Rail Canada), but it has even been purchased by commuter railways such as MARC, Coaster, ACE and Metro North despite competition from the EMD F125, MPI MPXpress and Brookville BL36.

im an amtrak engineer out of chicago and i can say currently, state owned chargers are a NIGHTMARE! they are constantly breaking down and seem to be 15 years old, even tho they are still technically new enough to be under warranty. ive personally picked up multiple dead trains when chargers have failed, and were talking minor to major failures people; from unavalible HEP (passengers freeze for hours in the dark while i rush to get them to chicago) to a connecting rob blowing out thru the crankcase, to the fire department called to put out an electrical fire.
i tell people that chargers are like a keurig coffee maker. if u fill it up with water, put in the pod, and the light doesnt come on............thats pretty much it. youre dead on the rails. the p42's they are replacing (btw ive never met anyone in my profession thats ever called it a genesis) are built more like an automobile from the 90's, you can actually TROUBLESHOOT THEM when something goes wrong. seimens is very careful to not let any of their proprietary information get out to too many people. this is a great buisiness model, but doesnt really work when a seimens tech works 9-5 monday thru friday.
also the locomotives are roughly 10 tons lighter than p42s, which might not seem like much, but running thru michigan in the snow? sliding past station platforms is just a common part of the day now, even for the most experienced engineers.
basically put (and i know im goimg to start a huge argument here 😖) chargers are the expensive apple devices of the rails: whenever something goes wrong you "need an adult". p42s are the tried and true desktop pc that your parents own: not perfect but you can at least figure out the issue. and as we say regularly "not the greatest equipment, but at least it'll get you home" 😎

Thanks, Mike Armstrong! I’m so happy that Coaster is getting their Dash 8s from Wabtec and Amtrak and also, I wanted to tell you that the new Class 1 railroad in North America, the New Jersey, Ohio, and Illinois Railway between Newark, NJ, and Chicago, IL, is opening soon! Since it will be Class 1 railroad #6 to replace Kansas City Southern (KCS), the NJOI will run both freight and passenger trains on their trackage. With new Siemens venture passenger cars being built for that freight/passenger railroad, Amtrak is rebuilding 46 P42DCs in Beech Grove, IN, as non-powered control units (NPCU) for use as cab cars on the NJOI's passenger trains with a roll up baggage car door on the rear of the long hood on them. The locomotive working hard on the front of these passenger trains is either an NJOI SC-44, ALC-42, or EMD F125. NJOI is getting ALC-42s from Siemens as well, but they will be used on their passenger trains only. Here’s my focus for this Class 1 railroad: Silver is mainline freight, orange is remote control, and dark green is passenger service with a P42 NPCU on the end of NJOI's passenger trains. NJOI will also be acquiring some GP40PH-2s from New Jersey Transit for use on their passenger trains as well. I can’t wait for the EMD SD70ACe-RCB to make its debut, though! Along with new cities being built in the US, do you want them to build that Class 1 railroad and add it to North America's network once it’s 100% complete with construction on the New Jersey, Ohio, and Illinois Railway (NJOI) set to begin by the middle of August?

Are those the new trainsets that are meant to be replacing the Amfleets on the NEC? Amtrak did say that Siemens is the preferred builder for the Amfleet’s replacements! I know the Siemens Ventures on the left of the ALC-42 are for Amtrak Midwest! Also will the ACS-64s be repainted into the Phase VI livery like the ALC-42 Chargers? The AEM-7 had changes to its livery from Phase III to IV to V and I’m wondering if the same thing is going to happen to the ACS-64s?
