- Austin Dillon joined the Dale Jr. Download on Tuesday to discuss his controversial win in Sunday night’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway. Dillon gave a detailed explanation of his move going into Turn 3 that ultimately took out Joey Logano, and the follow-up contact off the final turn that hooked Denny Hamlin.
Earnhardt Jr. asked Dillon if he has spoken to Hamlin since Sunday night, where the speed in his No. 3 Chevrolet came from, and what he expects in terms of penalties. Moving on from Richmond, Earnhardt Jr. wonders about the future of Richard Childress Racing and what caused Andy Petree to leave.

Nah Dillons wife was there for sure. Logano was limping into the box with his damaged car and pretty much revved most of the way to stay straight until people who werent supposed to be there came into his path and made him stop. Man just hit it harder to get going again.

If Hamlin or Logano were out of the playoffs with 3-4 races left and had a 3 second lead before the final caution they would have ran over the entire France family and their own crew to make the playoffs . To say otherwise is naive. Nascar's rules valuing wins above points made this inevitable . The next time a car in the 30s in points is in that situation it will happen again.

This is NASCAR's doing. #1 Dillon had this race won and was leaving them but NASCAR insist on the green, white, checker, overtime bullshit. #2 NASCAR says you win and you are in the Chase. Well hell, anyone that's out of the Chase and see's an opportunity to win is going to take it no matter what. NASCAR created this and they love it. They will never admit it but they love the cheering fans, ticket sales and TV ratings that it all creates.

While you may be right about Nascar wanting this, let's not ignore the fact that Dillon blew the restart and that was the primary reason he was in the position he was in. If he gets a good jump, he would've cleared Logano and none of this would've happened.

23 Top 5 finishes in 395 starts. The desperation on that team is understandable.
The refusal to replace a driver with that record IS understandable, given the employment situation. Desperation is no excuse for that bitchy move.
For reference, Bubba Wallace has 21 Top 5’s in 242 starts. Daniel Suarez has 20 Top 5’s in 274 starts. Dillon has more than 100 starts more than these two and has only a couple more Top 5’s. Yet those two get criticized way more than Dillon despite them being more respected by other drivers.

What Joey, Denny, even Dale Sr. did in the past is not even close to what Austin Dillon did. Austin came flying down the track and didn't make an attempt to race. He treated it like a video game. He did it because he thought he 'deserved' to win. This was one of the most pathetic things I've seen as a NASCAR fan. Just because you have a good car for one week doesn't mean you deserve a playoff spot, and that's the real problem. This dude is a clown, but blame the playoff system.

They have, but what Dillon did wasn’t just “moving somebody for the win” either
Denny and Joey have never sped up to rear end someone when 4 car lengths back then hooked someone to win, let alone do both back to back seconds apart. Joey who I have not liked has admitted he's fine with bump and run and it's something he has done, but that is not what Dillon did. And Denny has been penalized for hooking someone when not even doing it for a win. He admits it, he takes issue with how this is allowed because it's for a win and takes issue with the format that has this happen.

I think everybody is justified with their feelings in this scenario.
NASCAR has created a situation that lends itself to these kind of moments with the playoff structure and lack of officiating.
Austin did what a lot of drivers would have done when they got screwed out of the win due to somebody causing a caution late, and need to win to make the playoffs.
Joey and Denny are also both justified in being pissed off about it, even though they would (and have) do the same thing.
I also imagine that Austin will get some payback at some point because he could’ve raced clean despite everything being the way it was, and he did choose not to. I also imagine that Austin understands this and fully expects it, and still felt it was worth it.
If he makes it to the halfway point in the next race I'll be shocked.

Let’s take a look at this situation Austin had the best car all day. Yellow flag comes out with two laps left, then gets a bad restart. What would you do? He use the gas pedal to get into the corner as hard as he could with the car under control and got to the back of the Joey Logano. It happened race after race after race over the last 20 years… With this generation car that everybody runs within a quarter of a second of each other you have what you have?…NASCAR promotes win and you’re in… Austin did nothing wrong with moving Joey…. he didn’t turned Denny if you look at the video, Austin stays on the white line in the center of the track, and Denny comes up the track and as soon as Denny hit Austin car… I could see why Austin turned the steering wheel to the left holding that line.. NASCAR got exactly what they wanted out of this… look at all the advertisement all the news outlets are talking about it….social media is blowing up. Look you guys got an interview with Austin’s…. enough let’s go to Michigan. Yes, SHR Closing has open the doors for teams to pick the cream of the crop from SHR and yes Richard Childress is picking a lot of the cream from SHR. The only thing they missed out on is getting Rodney Childers money, money money talks… When Rick Hendrick gets involved and helps make that deal happen you know there’s a lot of money.

On the last lap I was yelling at the tv...your the #3 car...do it...do it!...and he did! If Dillion would have said "I just wanted to rattle his cage" after the race it would have been epic. Disclaimer: I was not a Dale Sr fan but he did make it exciting.

Great Interview! Enjoyed Ad's insight and Dale's questions. The crazy finish is taking away from the fact that AD had the best care at races end, excited to see what they can do the rest of the year
A lot of people keep saying that the #11 and #22 do this same thing all the time. Can anyone actually recall a time one of them torpedoed someone from that far back or right-hooked someone into a wall? Sure, they’re both dirty from a sportsmanship standpoint, but I don’t recall either of them doing anything this egregious. That said, I don’t really think anyone is blaming Dillon for this particular incident. This is just the system. His problem is that he really doesn’t belong in the series. He knows it, everyone does. He’s over his head all the time, but in this instance he’s effecting everyone and waisting a playoff spot. But it’s really the rules that are the problem. The team who is 32nd in points has no business being in championship contention in any sport. They should penalize him and keep him out of the playoffs to prevent others from doing this sort of thing…and because he doesn’t deserve to be there.

As a fan, well former fan, this is the absolute last straw. Things started to get hard with the chase, and then more changes to that format that made it worse, then stages. Then everything that's happened over the past few years. It's nothing more than NO TALENT rich kids playing bumper cars. I don't know what this is, but it's not racing. Why did Dillion start his explanation from the Hamlin Hit? His explanation should have started from when he ran over Logano. I'm disappointed in Dale that he didn't address the Restart that caused Dillion's actions Dale was too much of a Gentleman and let him dictate the conversation 🤔 Wasted Interview that provided no real/true information on his unethical actions, only allowed Dillion to attempt to change the story line.

I believe that's because Dale specifically asked about the data that showed Dillon turned left when he made contact with the 11 and asked him to explain the reason for that. I do agree it would have been better to hear his story beginning at the restart.
Because Hamlin was an accident that Hamlin caused himself he was explaining that it looked intentional on data but he was just trying to hold his line, the incident with logano needs no explanation that was just “good ol short track racing”
if you pay attention closely to Austin’s eyes, I think he’s reading off of something as his explanation.

Denny needs to rename his show to ACTIONS HYPOCRITICAL
Look at replays for the contact of the 3 and 11. Look at the position of the 3 and 11 in relation to the bottom yellow line of the track and the first lane dashed line and keep in mind that they are both still in the exit of the turn. You will see that the 3 in straddling the first lane dashed line and the 11 is at the bottom of lane 1 next to the yellow line. Now go frame by frame and watch the cars in relation to the 2 lines. You will clearly see the 11 moves up and into the 3, the 3 actual moves up slightly just before the 11 hits him. The 11 caused the accident.
Look at the SMT data. For Dillon to turn 30 degrees to the left to hit Hamlin, Dillon would have had to start the turn before the impact. (Look at the video. Do you see Dillon's car make left into Hamlin's car? NO.) The turn happens just after the impact starts. Dillon's car is straddling the first lane dashed line. When Hamlin hits Dillon it pushes Dillon's car into the middle of the second lane. Dillon has to correct for that and that is what the steering changes are about.
Hamlin admitted in his podcast that he never saw Dillon. Hamlin was NOT clear and thought he could run normal racing line, but Dillon was still there, and Hamlin ran into him.

Dale, thanks for this interview with Austin. I've been a Nascar fan since I was a kid. It was cool to hear his side and his appreciation for the sport and his team. Regardless of his lineage, it is good to hear from Austin as a man. If that makes sense. Keep up the good work!

If nascar lets it slide then that confirms they have fully evolved from motorsports to strictly entertainment WWF style. Its all good for the highlights and media until somebody get's hurt which is almost certain with 3 high speed tracks in the next four weeks-Michigan/Daytona/Atlanta. Nascar puts an end to it now or they have lost all respect and control.
When you let your sport devolve into the WWE version of motorsports, expect these kind of situations.

The other point is that the two drivers who have absolutely wrecked their opponents to win are upset at the result of Austin's actions to win is very hypocritical.

Many have commented the same thing yes with out a doubt. And they would have fought tooth and nail to get in the chase also with the same result. And as for the wreck him over the radio. It was delayed and had nothing to do with real time action. It happened simultaneous as the wrecking and hooking was happening. It's all on Austin Dillon.

I've never been a Dillon supporter, but that was a bad ass move. He was just reacting. I'm now a Dillon fan. Remember that Dillon also had to survive the wreak. Any of the drivers involved would do the same.

That's how I see it. Logano and Hamlin have punted cars many times. Now they are upset that they got punted. Downplay it and run it hard the next race.
Nascar shouldn't allow anyone except Officials and Pit Crew Members over the wall until all vehicles have come to a complete stop after the race and all drivers have exited the vehicle. I am all for their spouses and children to enjoy the win their respected partners but what happened Sunday is a prime example why Nascar needs to implement this rule immediately.

The interview was a waste of time. Austin Nvr talked about what he did to Lugano, and blamed Hamlin for being in his way (hahaha what a laugh) my question to austin would be how do u sped up and ram a man in the backend of his car to wreck him, WHY didn’t u jus pass him at the speed u we’re going
Watching the end of the race and seeing the 3 car in the position it was in, my mind went back to when the 3 and the 5 tangled at Bristol. I can hear Dale Sr saying Now that's how you drive that 3 young man...
He doesn't care about anything, he doesn't even care if he has a good car at the track, all he cares about is wrecking people to win. I see bumping and rubbing and beating on each other, that I respect, but just dumping a guy and not caring you did it, that's the problem. Dillion is a liar, you see Hamlin about to clear him and he turned down to clip him, just like his spotter was telling him too. His spotter didn't become a fan in that moment, he was telling him to wreck the 11, cuz that's what he wanted him to do
Its racing. Hamlin has done it Logano has done it. Hamlin tried to take advantage of it and got caught up making his move. Last lap last corner that is what racing is all about.
