- Today we look at the history of Earthbound from a new perspective. We break down one of the most unique RPGs ever made for the SNES, and see how it was in fact ROMs and piracy the both kept the game alive and wound up making Nintendo more money.

Fantastic video, SK! Love anything talking about EB. Ironic how ROMs ending up making it more famous. No wonder Nintendo has raged a war on ROMs. They HATE Earthbound! lol...
In all honesty, I remember playing this from renting it and LOVING it. There was no internet to share my passion for it back then (along with so many others), and because of that, it totally fell into obscurity for a bit.
Bravo dude... Again, Great job! Loved hearing the perspective on how you got exposed to it.
Found your channel from a comment on a Steven Crowder video. *I loved Earthbound,* so I had to watch. It's just so *_wholesome_* and perfect! And I think Paper Mario TTYD is probably the only game that comes close to it (at times) in terms of style, but there really is something about Earthbound which is different. Shigesato Itoi is a genius.
Great video SK! Admittedly I have not played earth bound but have known about it for quite some time. I need to get it for the 3DS virtual console along with Pokemon Crystal. Would love to see more retro Nintendo game showcases like these. Keep up the good work!
Never played it and don't know if I ever will. BUT, what a GREAT video I must say. I thoroughly enjoyed it and please keep up the great work....my son and I look forward to all your videos. Thank you
While this is true, I'd say Ness' inclusion in the original Smash brothers played a larger role here. Nobody knew who Ness was when they unlocked him, so they began researching and found Earthbound. The release of Smash 64 coincided with the boom of emulators, so it was the perfect storm for an obscure game like Earthbound to shine among gaming enthusiasts.
Melee did the same thing for Fire Emblem, turning it from an obscure Japan-only game to one of Nintendo's major franchises. You could argue Brawl did the same for Kid Icarus as well, but by then emulation was not as large a slice of the PC gaming market or as prominent in broader gaming culture.
Excellent points and I can't argue with any of them. There's no doubt that Smash helped out all the titles you mention. There are quite a few factors that lead Earthbound having some quirky yet legendary status. I just thought that the piracy aspect was particularly interesting and wanted to make an argument that piracy and roms/emulation isn't always bad.
Either way, thanks for watching and taking the time to drop a detailed note, I really appreciate it!
Nicely presented you make seriously valid points and I agree ... forgotten and neglected games get a revive due to roms. I wonder what other titles are like that ... would EVO count as one or Little Samson? I would have to do some research on those. Luckily I found my copy of Earthbound while thrifting so I was very lucky to get it for under 5 bucks. Back in the day, when thrift shops sold games at reasonable prices.
Great job on this!
Much appreciated! That means a lot coming from you sir!
True story, and great vid! If you enjoyed Earthbound, absolutely play Undertale if you haven't already.
Wow you already responded
You know it!
I played and finished for the first time a few months ago. It's a good game, but damn, it's highly overrated. Not saying it's bad, just over hyped.
First
Yes indeedy! And hopefully not the last lol!
