    I’m not here to make mealy friends, I’m here to drown them all away.
    Mealy bugs will hide in the crevices and suck the life out of your plant one leave at a time. If the plant is small enough, a good soak is welcomed and repotted if needed. In this case this Hoya was overdue for. Repot anyway. You can repeat every 4-7 days but if the plant is not needing watered yet, cover the pot/soil with a bag hand rinse off just the foliage or you can make that solution and add in a spray bottle as well.
    Castile soap and water is an effective way to get those mealies knocked off the plant and running alcohol for spot treatment will kill them instantly.
    Mix ½ teaspoon of castile soap in 1 quart of water… or if you’re like me, add until your heart tells you to stop.

      Hi, I've been having issues with fungus gnats and I have tried all kinds of things - hydrogen peroxide solution, apple cider vinegar traps, sticky traps and my latest attempt was diatomaceous earth - but I still have a serious infestation, the last straw will be killing my young begonia rex....before we get to that point I just thought I'd ask if anyone could make any suggestions ♡ thanks

    • @mommyofcoquette
      @mommyofcoquette Před 10 měsíci +6

      Have you tried insecticidal soap and systemic insect control? I've tried to cover all my bases with those two plus diatomaceous earth, and, knock on wood, I've kept them at bay after a scare.

      @@emilyharlan12518Soak Mosquito Bit pellets in your watering can overnight then use the infused water to water your plants. If you don't want the pellets floating in your water you can make a tea bag by putting them in a nylon and tying it shut. It will kill the eggs/larvae in the soil. You'll also need sticky traps to get the adults to stop them from laying more eggs.

    • @colorfullymelodious
      @colorfullymelodious Před 10 měsíci +6

      @@emilyharlan12518U can also put something on top of the soil like rocks...BC they like wet soil but if they can't get to it they will leave the plant alone

    I'm a gartner apprentice and here is what I learnt to use against mealybugs.
    I use a mix of water, castor soap and rubbing alcohol in a spraybottle and a soft toothbrush. Spray the infected areas an gentley brush with the toothbrush, I let it sit for a little bit and rinse it of, when I see no more mealybugs. If the plant is very infected I let it sit overnight with the mix on because the remaining bugs will crawl out overnight, and then I can get the rest of then the next day.
    Works for me but you gotta keep on top of it. When I buy new plants, I often give them a spray before letting them join the family, just to be safe.

      I feel even more lucky now! I took a clipping years ago from my mom's Hoya. I heard they were hard to propagate in Colorado, but it's thriving and is nearly as big as its parent plant! Mealies and spider mites nearly took out several plants in my household but never impacted the Hoya. I learned over time how important it was going to be to quarantine newcomers for at least two weeks and monitor them daily. ❤ I'm now the plant nurse at work😊

    • @LulaMae21
      @LulaMae21 Před 10 měsíci +2

      If you quarantine new plants, clean with insecticidal soap and/or treat with a systemic pesticide, and keep an eye on them, you can usually catch infestations before they get out of control. I've had mealies pop up a few times on my hoya but always been able to treat them before it got bad, though mine are still fairly small.

      @kat1984 Před 10 měsíci +2

    A few months ago I thought there was a mealy. I went psycho on it. Killed it with peroxide, then insecticidal soap, then furniture polish (I said psycho), then drowned it upside down and then... I realized it was 99.9% more likely to be a piece of down from my pet bird, who was starting to molt and was right next to the plant... Sorry philodendron white wizard 😬

    I experienced mealybugs for the first time not too long ago and watching this short kind of settled my soul about the nasty critters. They were on a HUGE 8 foot long Hoya Sunrise that I bought from someone online. I've never had any pests besides gnats, so I was seriously freaking out. I soaked the entire plant with pure rubbing alcohol 😂 and added SO MUCH diatomaceous earth in my spray bottle with water that I can't even get the stuff off the leaves 😂 So thank you for this short!!!

    I did this to a Hoya of mine with mealy bugs. I soaked it with Castile soap and sprayed it with alcohol. I repotted it as well. After the repotting my Hoya was in so much shock that it had more mealy bugs than before I repotted it. But after a week it was doing so well after I gave higher humidity, light, and better soil. Now I can’t find any mealybugs 🎉!

I now have plant stands that sit in front of my windows, but ain't NOBODY ALLOWED to touch the glass or the wall 😂 Haven't had a spider mite nor meely bug in over a year🤞DROWN THEM HOES! @lisamiddleton2638 Před 10 měsíci

      Why do you think that is? Just curious on the thought process. I’ve yet to have any pest infestations and I know it’s going to happen. I have only about 40 plants. I used to just bring them home and plop them all down. Now I treat them. But I’m not really able to isolate them very well. But I check them and touch wood I have yet to have any issues.

    • @melissapiper7827
      @melissapiper7827 Před 10 měsíci +3

      Agreed! Especially the damn spider mites!! They attack my prayer plant each time it's too close to a window and have nearly killed it twice after I moved to a bug-hood haven. I think it might be proximity... those buggers can't fly or jump, so if a leaf is touching a window, wall, or floor, the life-suckers can more quickly get to the food source with fewer obstacles.

One day I noticed on the back patio mealy bugs on my plants I’m like WHERE ARE THEY COMING FROM? I found a HUGE patch around a tree. I sprayed them a few times on different days and I haven’t seen anymore since then. I think the new neighbors brought them to our neighborhood.

    A friend of mine gifted me an orchid a few years back. This orchid is the reason why I don’t like them and how I learned that you should always isolate new plants at first incase of hidden pests. This orchid brought me mealy bugs and infested a few of my other plants. I threw the orchid away and tried to get rid of the bugs as much as possible but it took two years since I fully got rid of them:’) except for that dreaded orchid there weren’t any fatal victims but one of my favourite and first plant got hit very badly and is a shadow of what it once was… but I still have a part of the original plant and it is recovering slowly but steadily❤️

    With my indoor plants, I just use an imidacloprid drench. There are no pollinators or beneficials in my house, so no reason to not go for quick, easy, and guaranteed death. (Does not work on spidermites, it actually somehow will make them worse.)
    It's not the treatment for everyone or every plant... But if you have a big plant with a lot of crevices, it might be your only solution other than trashing the plant.

    Wait. I literally just did this with my compacta that lives outside for the entire summer once I found a mealy!! Well started to get cold so I checked to see if she could finally come join the indoor planty party and that’s a hard NO. Those lil buggers were still kickin it even after hosing down multiple times with the jet stream and using systemic and neem!! So I resorted to dr bronners which I never even knew anyone used! I soaked the root ball for 30 then flipped the plant upside down and soaked the entire compacta leaves for 30- probably in too strong of a mix- sink or swim time baby!!!

    yaas. alcohol those suckers..😂 my mom owns a commercial greenhouse and those things are on everything at some point throughout the year. They love succulents and cactus too. to get rid they take water spray bottles and use 90% rubbing alcohol and mix it with water 60/40. spray all the bugs and they die quickly until the next episode.. a neighbor of mine uses peppermint oil instead of alcohol with about the same ratio. it also makes her home and yard pest free and smell amazing.. I have a big indoor rat tail cactus that they love to cling to and I keep my mini bottle behind it to spray when I see one..☺️

    I powder the heck out of mine with diatomaceous earth when they get any insect at all. Harmless to people and pets, and super effective. Leave them sit for a few days to a week and then just wash them off.

    I don't know how,, but the only two times I've found a mealybug on my plants, it was a only a single one. I removed it and that was that. Then again, I have a kalanchoe that keeps spawning aphids no matter how often I suds it up.

    I hit any that I can see with a q-tip dipped in alcohol---then you can see that you've gotten them because they turn brown when touched with alcohol and stick to the q-tip.
    I did neem oil treatments every week until they were gone, again hitting any malingerers with the alcohol-soaked q-tip.
    I love the "how are you? I am under the water---please help me...."
    Thank you for the smile!

    I got a few plants from home depot and i got fungus gnats!! My mom got them too bcuz i brought them to her place to get repotted. It is taking a very long time to get rid of them! I got the sticky traps, safer soap and need oil. The neem oil almost killed one plant. Then i got DE powder....it seems to be working so far. But noe my mini monstera had these tiny bugs. They look brownish. Ughhh

    Ugh. I don't wanna toss the whole pot of soil in my place, cuz I'm so sure they're coming thru a crack in the window from. Outside cuz my windows suck. I just wanna put a sundew next to the plant for a bit. I put a pitcher plant near one with fruit flies and it helped a little bit...

    There's a spray called Ardap. It kills the bugs and keeps them away for at least a month. Not meant for usage on plants but it doesn't hurt them either.

    I hate those things. Hate. I had a plant that had them, treated it and thought I was good. I went away on a trip and came back to a mealybug takeover of all my plants. It happened so fast. I was so overwhelmed and upset that I tossed everything 😩

    I added neem oil to my bucket of water, let it soak for 5 minutes, then rinsed it off. It worked on all my infested plants. No more mealy bugs 🙌🏼
