    I'm a private pilot and have landed on gravel and grass but a 737 on gravel? That's just awesome!

    I was on Air North Boenig 737-200 flight from Dawson City to Fairbanks, Alaska in 2017. Smooth take off on gravel runway.

    And this is why NOTHING will properly replace the 737-200!

    I witnessed this last year, but in murky weather. The old models are used for charter flights to e.g. Fairbanks

      PeterNGloor Yes! Saw it again the next day in Fairbanks. So cool to see a 737 take off on gravel though!

    What are the items attached to the front landing gear an under the front of each engine? Is this a feature on the old -200s or something for gravel or cold weather operations?

      Its a special gravel runway kit that was developed for airfields like Dawson City. For this take off the engines would more or less be maxed out for thrust to get the bird off the short runway . Its awesome to watch live .

      The tubes in the front use engine bleed air (high pressure air made from the compressor in the engine) to blow away the engine intake vortices and dissipate the vacuum effect preventing gravel from being sucked into the engines. The gear attachment keeps rocks from being flung up and damaging the fuselage. A mud flap of sorts.

    Must be a pain keeping the gravel on the runway

      Gerald Schaerig I think you mean 737-300. They retired their last 200's in the mid 90's.

      So the gravel doesn't harm the engines? Is there so device preventing the gravel from entering the engines?

    • @Av8tor16
      @Av8tor16  Před 7 lety

      skyraiderjet Yeah, these 737's have special gravel kits. I can't explain exactly how they work to you so here's a link haha. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravelkit

    • @skyraiderjet
      @skyraiderjet Před 7 lety

      Thanks, do you ever get any turboprop aircraft operating on the airfield? Do they have any gravel kits?

    • @Av8tor16
      @Av8tor16  Před 7 lety

      skyraiderjet I was only there for about 45 minutes. I know Air North flies Hawker Siddeley HS 748's into Dawson but i don't know if they even need gravel kits.
