Based on the # 1 New York Times bestseller “A Man Called Ove,” A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grump who no longer sees purpose in his life following the loss of his wife. Otto is ready to end it all, but his plans are interrupted when a lively young family moves in next door, and he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol. She challenges him to see life differently, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world around. A heartwarming and funny story about love, loss, and life, A Man Called Otto shows that family can sometimes be found in the most unexpected places.
Directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland), A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Cast Away), Mariana Treviño (Club the Cuervos), Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven). The screenplay is written by Academy Award® nominee David Magee (Best Adapted Screenplay, Life of Pi, 2012; Best Adapted Screenplay, Finding Neverland, 2004) based upon the best-selling novel “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman, and the film A Man Called Ove by Hannes Holm. The film is being produced by Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman.

My wife and I were in Pittsburgh for an appointment, arrived way too early so we went for a walk. We saw a film crew setting up, they had streets blocked off, so for curiosities sake we stood by and watched for a moment. Out of nowhere, Tom Hanks walked right up to my wife and I... even though he was wearing a face mask he was instantly recognizable and as he approached my wife said "OMG it's Tom Hanks"!!! Mr Hanks pretended to look about frantically and said "REALLY? WHERE????!!!" and we laughed. He stood and talked to us, took a photo with us, and was so kind. Anyway, he did that because we were in an area where we weren't supposed to be, and someone on the film crew was about to come over and yell at us and Tom Hanks scolded the person and decided to just come over and talk to us, rather than someone yelling at us. We had no idea what actor was there or even why the camera's were being set up, we were just people going for a walk. Thank you Mr Hanks for making our day that day, and for your overwhelming kindness!
How very kind of him! Then again, he is The Nicest Guy in Hollywood! 😊
Only in Pittsburgh…..
What a great human being
You’re so grateful to a man instead of God. No God fearing man would praise humans like you do, disgusting
My favorite time was when some guy drank too much and passed out on the bar with his cellphone on the counter. Tom Hanks picked up the guys cellphone and took a bunch of selfies with him and the passed out guy. It was hysterical 🤣.
Just saw this. This movie delivers a very strong message about how we should cherish our memories and live a full life at the same time, no matter the age. Don't get trapped in the past, it becomes a burden too heavy to carry.
U worded this really nicely🥲❤
@@stxrgene Thank you. 🙂
I don't cry for this movie
I like it!😊
❤❤❤❤
I loved that the protagonist grew and started to heal with the help of platonic friends (particularly Marisol's family) and neighbors and not with the help of a romantic interest. We need more movies like this. It was absolutely the best one I've seen in a while. So many amazing messages and it was just absolutely touching. There are many people struggling just like Otto, and sometimes with a little compassion, love, patience and a dash of humor we may just be able to be a "Marisol" to someone or an "Otto" to someone like Malcolm and vice versa or really any of the amazing characters in this film that loved one another (particularly Otto) when they most needed it and help them through the darkness to the light.

just finished watching this on netflix and I'm still bursting into tears, from this film I came to understand the life of senior citizens who are more than just humans who are enjoying their old age but also they still have to deal with their own problems . This film really opened up my way of understanding senior citizens and moved my heart to become a personality like Marisol, as I am a 19-year-old human being who has never acknowledged senior citizens like Otto himself. so yeah... this is a movie you must see once in your lifetime .
💙
Me too it takes alot to get me crying and this movie made me cry it was wonderful it also made me smile and burst out laughing it had it all a 10 out of a 10
Everyone needs a marisol in their life ❤️
True.
Even better if you try to become Marisol yourself :)
hmm... makes me reflect... anyone can be a mirsol in somebody's life 💖
Honestly
I love her character!!!
I read A Man Called Ove when i went to rehabilitation for alcoholism. I don't think I ever appreciated how much joy and love there is in this world outside of my negative, depressing, loveless ways of thinking about the world around me. 60 days of being internal with no tv, cell phone, or news, just books. And Ove, well, he changed my life. I always imagined Robert Dinero or Tom Hanks playing Ove in my head. I literally just thought about the book looking back just now and to my surprise a movie is coming out this soon. Unreal. Although I am sober right now there are times where i start with that negative thinking and i remind myself all the love i would lose if i drank again. Thank you to the original Author of a Man Called Ove, thank you to T.Hanks and his crew for making this movie , and to the makers of the original swedish version (which i didn't even know or thought it would exist until now).
Here's to being sober. And to all of you struggling out there with addiction, remember to never say never, just say for now, the next 5 minuts, next 5 days. Just never say never and BREATHE. Your family loves you, your kids love you, and even without that know that, not just God, but YOU Love YOU.
Try the original (Swedish) movie of the book. It's one of those rare movies that is just as good as the book.
Good luck to you. Do yourself a favor and read the rest of Freddy backmans books.
For those who are "struggling" with addiction, STOP struggling! The basis for getting and staying sober is to "SURRENDER". Without surrender, there will be no willingness to "live differently". I have taken the words "struggle", "battle", and "fight" out of my vocabulary and thinking. My mantra is, "Live in the problem, or live in the solution. I know what I'm talking about. 5/8/1994
All the best to you Frank! ✌

I cried watching the Swedish movie and cried even harder reading the book, it was a great blend of dark humor, seeing Ove (Otto) processing his grief was quite sad but watching him grow with his community was wholesome. I love Tom Hanks and i hope this version is as good as the Swedish film and the book.

Im a 27 year old guy, i randomly watched this beautiful film. I hardly cry in movies. This movie had me in Tears. Made me imagine a life without my loved ones. The ending broke me. Tom hanks is one of the best actors along Leonardo.
I’m 28 and lost my dad suddenly to a stroke almost 5 years ago. My family blew apart at the seems and I moved home from college thinking we would grieve together, but have been the only person living in the house we all grew up in since, which is like living in a loop of both what was and what you wish still was, the most
Not too proud to say life’s been a mess: I have been so lonely, angry and shut out from the world since he’s been gone that I am quite indeed a young Otto… but I almost felt like my dad was talking to me through the movie telling me that it’s okay to keep living without him. I broke down multiple times and that’s something I haven’t let myself do enough. Thank you Tom Hanks ❤️
Check on your friends. You never know what battles they’re fighting
Hey, man. Im so sorry for your loss... I know it has been tough but you got this. I hope you are doing better now. But if not, just take one day at a time, fight the negativities, and persevere. The struggle is real but better days will come. God bless.
Sending you peace
My condolences man I know it’s hard but hang in there
Hey bro. I’m 33 and I lost my dad I to cancer 3 years ago. I’m also now living in his home and the place we shared such fond memories. It’s been a tough road. I was inconsolable for a whole year. I hated the world. I couldn’t understand how people could laugh or smile at anything. I hated them for it. Severe grief and depression is a terrible affliction. Time has slowly helped and I can look at his photos now with a smile. Each day at a time bro. Love.
I still have to watch this I bought the DVD but -- a few years ago a girl I dated for 6 years died of leukemia - it's been very hard to get over -- But it gets easier 😢
The Swedish movie was PERFECT. i felt every emotion. I hope that it is the same with this one.
It's Tom Hanks. Let me assure you that you will feel EVERY emotion.
@@nula14 Well. I'm a big Hanks fan, but to be fair, this trailer didn't sell it properly. It will be damn difficult to top Rolf Lassgård's performance.
From the trailer I am disapointed. Tom Hanks can't do it as good as Rolf Lassgård. Tom does not deliver the correct feeling in the trailer.
Hope so,but a lot of American comedies lack subtlety and nuance, and go for the obvious laugh...
This seems good yes but why change the name around which the whole story revolves😢
this movie was so precious I cried in my bed for 2 hours like a child. Tom Hanks never disappoint
The scene where he takes her out to dinner is a thing of beauty.
As a widow of just under two years, I can fully appreciate where "Otto" is coming from. My husband was the light of my life...to be without him is a pain I never thought I'd feel...at least until I was near 80, anyway. He passed after along struggle with COPD...now I do find myself a bit of a grump, it takes serious efforts some days to get my head out of that dark, depressed place. I keep busy and realize, I am still here for a reason...when that reason time period is over, I will get to join my dearly beloved. Rest in peace, babe...
I am so sorry for your loss ❤
Im sorry.
Like you said you are here for a reason and it will be also your time ….we all have to go at some point …..hope you can take advantage of your life
I agree. It's not my time yet . I also know he is nearby and we will be together in eternity ❤
I can really imagine how you feel.
But you’re still needed here.
A hug for you.
At the right time you’ll join your husband.
A chunk of this movie was filmed outside of Pittsburgh. I work in the one town and whole filming the crew couldn't have been kinder to everyone. The fact that Tom Hanks was waving and talking to everyone not to mention randomly showing up at people's weddings to wish them luck just makes me want to see the movie more.
My old boss was an extra. I'm gonna be looking for him in the background. If I spot him, he'll be the 3rd person I know that has made it into a Hollywood movie.
Yea...my best friend lives right beside that apartment they used which I thought was too cool
This new version seems to have changed an awful lot of the story to things that could have been literally borrowed out of MY (ACTUAL OTTO) everyday life.

The original movie A man called Ove is truly a masterpeice. Ive cried so hard to that movie.
I will watch this, but I doubt they will catch me getting as emotional as I was during the original swedish version.
Tom Hanks a really good actor though, so Im somewhat hopefull this will make it.
I usually hate American remakes, especially of Swedish films as a Swede, but I actually think this looks good!
If anybody can do it justice, it's Tom Hanks
@@themacocko6311 Absolutely! But I also think the story works pretty well in an American context which is usually what I take issue with.
A man called Ove is wonderful. Tom Hanks is a great comedian but is too likable to sell the grumpy old man bit. This is just karaoke.
I’m sure you will have no problem getting emotional. It’s what liberals do instead of thinking!
i felt Otto's sadness right from the start of the film. I knew what's going on on his head. The kindness of his old and new neighbor/friends to him, his subconscious gesture to take initiative of giving a hand when needed, plus the comfort of having a pet to keep you company, and the reality of life of old people--everything on this film was painfully beautiful and i cried my heart out. This made its mark on my heart already. Such a gem i found. I thank the author of this novel btw.
Tom Hanks, no questions. hands down acting. Bravo. But i came here to check and i didnt see any high recognitions to what Marisol contributed to this masterpiece. The actress was so great here. Netflix should give her more projects. An amazing actress.
Best part for me is marisol laughing at doctor diagnosis report "big heart"
This movie made you think of so much. Amazing . Also makes you understand why a lot of old people are grumpy because of their life missing one another.
Exactly,
They usually get attached to their past:
“In my times…….this and that was better”.
I’m sure a lot of things were better but, it wasn’t so much the things; it was the people they shared them with.
Great movie
A fellow Otto living in the US here. My heart skipped a beat when he had to spell his name for the little girl. I have to spell my name regularly when people give me a blank look after I introduce myself.
If I pronounce the "t"-s, many people think my name is "Octo". If I pronounce it with an American accent as Tom Hanks did in the trailed with a "d", many think it's "Auto". I can't win. Sometimes I just tell them my name is Arnold.
I sincerely think this movie will change my life, and I can re-claim my own name! I cannot wait to watch it...😍
My Dad was born in 1940 as the tenth child in a poor family in rural Hungary. That time Hungary was on Germany's side in WW2, and had big hopes in getting their lost territories back. This is why he was given a German name, which became my own name as his firstborn and why I became known as Arnold in Starbucks.
Take comfort in the knowledge that there is a minimum of 3 countries where they never get your name wrong and will never expect you to spell it out. Hang in there, this movie might change your life. And if it doesnt, you can either stick with Arnold or immigrate to Germany, Switzerland or Austria - they got your back! 👍
Another Otto here, I usually go by my second name though.
They Murica don't read much don't they? even in a 3rd world country we figure out the name of Otto and how to spell it.
Love your story! Otto has a sense of humour. And a great name. Bestens, Chris
Hello Arnold in Starbucks
Tom Hanks, for me, one of the only well-known actors that completely disappears every time I start one of his movies. When I’m watching him, I never find myself thinking, “Wow. Tom’s really killing it. I am so impressed,” because I forgot that Tom was in it about five minutes in, and am instead just watching Otto go about his life.
I forget how good Tom is sometimes, but when I remember, I remember that he’s one of the greats.
Gotta say im so tough...dont really tear for anything.
That being said.
THIS MOVIE. TOUCHED. ME. SO MUCH. TO ALL THE OTTOS OUTTHERE... WE LOVE YOU..TAKE CARE
Just finished watching this wholesomely beautiful movie! I am in tears right now! I almost gave up on Hollywood after a series of awful flicks that I had to go through but this gem of a film singlehandedly restored my hope. One of those movies that is supremely feel-good and at the same time it had a sad hint to it and the acting was phenomenal. Tom Hanks is always good and he doesn't need any introduction but the rest of the cast was really great too. Go watch it if you haven't already!

As someone who has just seen it this past weekend, I have to be honest when I say this was the most aspiring film I’ve seen in my whole entire life.Even more than one of Hanks’s famous roles as Forrest in Forrest Gump, this film will bring out every single emotion that any true human being has. Not only the writer and the director do I applaud, but every single actor and actress in this movie played their specific roles better than I have ever seen in a single movie. A man called Otto has another incredible performance from the great Tom Hanks. All the other actors were impressive as well. Especially Mariana Trevino, who was exceptional. She has this endearing, lovable presence that captivates the viewers attention every time shes on screen.
Actually my wife and I recently looked into the cinema programme and decided there was nothing that really tickled our fancy. However, a few days ago, the evening before a holiday we decided on a little date night and just went for A Man Called Otto, which in my mind is a beautiful piece of film! I didn't even watch the trailer beforehand, so except the few bits of info my wife fed me, I wasn't really sure what we were getting into. I think I can confidently say that I have never cried this much during a film. From the reveal of what happened to the wife and the baby over to Otto becoming a sort of grandpa to Marisol's kids just took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I envisioned becoming a father one day, making my dad a grandpa, which I know he'd love and be awesome at. Those were the tears of excitement and joy. At the same time, I remembered my own grandpa who passed over 16 years ago and I am still very sad sometimes that he isn't around anymore. Furthermore, my wife and I have not even been married for a full year and known each other for just over five but the film made me go through all the memories we've made so far, making me even more thankful for her being with me, me not being alone and having someone by my side to love and cherrish the time together. This made me feel positive about the future and what is to come for us.
I will probably carry the memories from this one forward for a long time. It has a special place in my heart.
Thank you, Mr. Tom Hanks for playing this character in such a great way and thank you to the entire cast and crew for making such a wonderful piece of film. In my opinion this one deserves a few awards! Greetings and lots of love from Berlin, Germany.
I was pleasantly surprised because this movie was amazing ❤️ There was laughter and tears but most of all it was heartwarming. Tom Hanks and all the other actors gave wonderful performances. If you get the opportunity, definitely watch this movie, you won't be disappointed. Cheers 🥂
@Tom Hanks LOL you are almost as good an actor as the actual Tom Hanks. It's a shame that your channel is only 2 weeks old and that you have no subscribers. Bravo 👏 Cheers 🥂
@Tom Hanks are you dumb?
Finally Tom doesn't have to act and He just can be Himself. Great movie!
Amazing movie best of 2023 .....we need such movies ❤
I'm like crying already and it's only the trailer!!!! hahaha. I FREAKING LOVE TOM HANKS!!
I started the book but never completed it, but my sisters are fans of this one. I really love the fact that Tom hanks is the actor, and havent seen the movie yet but the comments here are pure heart love letters. Thank you for creating this one.
Hello how are you doing, how long have you been a fan of mine?
I love it . I was crying my eyes out !!!! I love you Tom Hanks !!!’ Amazing !
the whole story about the principle of the environment, friendship and even with his wife, 99% is very similar to my father who is gone. makes me keep repeating this story, in order to cure my longing for my father. but I can't stop crying afterwards. I hope mom and dad are in peace there with God, and hopefully God will call me soon so we can be together again.amin
Absolutely loved this movie. 10/10
Well done Tom Hanks 👏 👍 👌
Just finished watching this movie and I absolutely loved it! Tom Hanks is seriously going to be missed! This movie made me wanna cry a few times! It’s like peeking into the life of an elderly person. Brilliant performance ❤
Wait… tom hanks is not dead why you saying that ? 😂
Well he did passed away in the movie but not irl though
@@thecitizens4573 I said he is going to be missed ** Future tense
@@_Nikki_ I never said he passed away lol what are y’all reading
What a meaningful movie with a touch of humor. Real life with sadness and joy but above all, love for each other. Beautiful.
"Every word you say is like a warm cuddle" - love it!!
Tom Hanks is back with another book adaptation which is feel good
It's not feel good. It's just boring swedish literature. Over acted by Cuck Hanks.
From the trailer, you'd never be able to tell that this is a movie about a guy continuously trying to kill himself. The trailer for Man Called Ove very much led with it and it's not like it isn't what the movie is about so it's not a secret. It's the premise. It's written in the description of the movie that the studio put out.
Groundhog Day again lol
Shhh. Don't give it away. :-)
I hope they didn't take his attempted suicides out! That was sad, yet funny!
Are you talking about after life show?
All he needed was a stoop and some balloons 😂🤣😂🤣
All be darn, I started crying watching this wonderful movie. Tom Hanks has done it again
Hello ma’am I really appreciate your love and support for my dad’s movie careers thanks for the love ❤️ ❤
I cried so much!!!!! Wow! Beautiful movie and beautiful message-
We all need community and a sense of purpose💛 be ready to cry!!!!
Nice to see Tom getting on so well with children
Nah… he’s a Pedophile and Evil
Nothing new
Tom absolutely LOVES kids 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
He is a National treasure. I appreciate his talent and honesty in the characters he has portrayed. Congrats to you and your wife, that’s a memory you’ll always have.
Really What a loser
@@alberttrombino3171 What do you have against Tom Hanks?
This movie is not about story, action, twist and turns but about feeling and smile on your face while watching it ♥️
I'm at the emotional tender age of going to be 73 soon. I'm not like Otto. I'm the opposite and very empathetic. I see all things caring and compassionate, even the indifferent seems wanting of compassion and love. Otto is like an emotional rollercoaster. Being human is what I think the better part of us strives for. This movie engenders all of that. I like stories of love and compassion... being human. 🙏🏼❤🙏🏼❤
I went to go and see this just to keep my mother company. And I was in awe about it. It was awesome. I laughed, tears was coming out. It gave me a 80’s love of one’s neighborhood, everyone look out for each other, family vibe.
This movie is a masterpiece . Tom Hanks at his best and all the actors demonstrated true talent. I’m thankful there are still movies written and produced showing good in this crazy world.
I am going to go see this masterpiece of a movie for the second time today! Absolutely brilliant!!
Right it's so hard to land on a good movie these days.
This is a remake of a Swedish movie (A man called Ove 2015)....both versions are very good but to be very honest the Swedish version is Slightly better (Atleast for me) bcoz i had watched it before and the Swedish actor nailed the Character.....like Tom Hanks but i still liked the Swedish version more than this...I would suggest you to watch that as well...with English subtitles or in English dubbed.....I am sure you will enjoy every bit of it....
I cant stop crying. 😢😢
Made me cry in the end was a really great movie
This movie brought me to a lot of places. Didn't even notice how long it is and every character has been a favorite. I normally don't prefer movies like this but clearly, it wasn't on my expectation that it will turn out perfectly wholesome.
The only mistake this film ever did was not naming the cat 🥺
I thought the cat and Otto were both at the same level of grumpiness and he seemed as feral as the cat sometimes so I called the cat toto in my head. rearranged Otto's name
Another movie from the legend himself....man i have to wait until January for this masterpiece.
It will be in selected theaters on the 25th of December.
Been really surrounded of Suicide and depression lately and Im of them altho im trying to heal my pain and lived life but sometimes sadness could just creep out and push you to dark place again. But i always remind myself there are people that Love and appreciate me. This movie is just one hell of a wake up call to realize that life should be lived in. Life is precious if you choose to. Tom Hanks never disappoints. This is just one great movie.
❤
I read “a man called ove” years ago and absolutely loved it. I’ve read several other books by Fredrick Backman after and they are always lovely. Can’t wait to see this movie.
Anxious People got me back into reading as an adult. I don’t normally read contemporary fiction but it was so good 😭😭😭
Me too!
