Top 10 Most Iconic Episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog

  • Courage the Cowardly Dog is a classic show that, in my opinion, completely embodies the nostalgic feeling of late '90s-early 2000s Cartoon Network. Drawing inspiration from a large collection of various popular horror media, Courage is one of the first cartoons I remember watching that incorporated a spooky twist on the modern children's cartoon.
Having originally ran from November 1999-November 2002, Courage the Cowardly Dog remains (in my opinion) one of the best cartoons to air on Cartoon Network to date.
Today, we take a look at the top ten most iconic episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog.

I 1,000% agree with #1. You can't think of Courage without Ramases being the very first episode to pop in your head.
But one episode I wish people would talk about is the puppeteer one, "The Great Fusilli". The ending to that one where Courage's owners both become marionette puppets, that Courage has to operate, always made me feel uncomfortably sad and freaked out as a kid.
The places your mind goes with that ending are a real rabbit hole morbid-ness. Are they dead, and Courage is playing with corpses? Are they alive forever trapped in wooden puppet bodies? It's just plain creepy, and no one ever talks about it.

My husband and I often reference Fred with the way he says "Naughty". And King Ramsey's"Return the Slab or suffer my curse" endeared this series to my whole family(Mom, Dad, me, and my brother) when it aired. Ustes and Mirriel reminded my parents of my dad's father and my mom's grandmother(both of whom passed away the same week of my junior year of high school) and this episode earned this series the nickname "The Selma and Clyde Show" in our home. My brother and I LOVED the "King Ramseys Demonic Arts" song riff in this episode and I couldn't help but notice how Ramsey's himself looked a lot like that one character in TV commercials during the Beatljuice cartoon. Great list!

After just discovering your channel like 2 weeks ago, mostly of your later videos, I am now newly subscribed and starting to binge your channel from the start. I LOVE doing this when discovering a new channel (more so when they're relatively newer as they have less videos lol). I'm excited to see this from the start! See you later in a couple of days. lol

I also felt the same way with the King Ramses one feeling so long despite being just 11 minutes long. This mentioned episode and the Windmill Horsemen were the longest for me because they were so terrifying I kept waiting when would they finally stop.

Before I watch, here are quotes from the episodes I remember most (since I remember quotes more than show titles)
    10) Where's your hat? Little boy needs his hat.
    9) It's Doc Gerbil's World!
    8) NAAAUGHTY
    7) ...or the fat lady gets it!
    6) We're duck brothers. We don't lay eggs!
    5) Where's me mallet!
    4) (Creepy mermaid lady beckoning Eustice to his death.)
    3) You see these bones? You wanna know what made these bones? You don't wanna know what made these bones.
    2) How... Now... Brown... Cow...
    1) RETUUURN THE SLAAAAB!!!

well it had it's terrifying moments to be sure, but it was also quite funny, whether it be when he's trying to warn his owners, laugh at his agony or trying to "Ask Jarvis" when he needs info.

Essentially this is a comedy series. The show was often packed full of comedy: slapstick and pratfalls, the sarcastic computer, Eustace's incredible greed, etc. It *had* to have humor to soften all the frightful creatures and situations. You could not have had the Courage show with just monsters and evil beings; parents would not stand for it.

I loved courage as a kid and still do.
I honestly expected perfect or the slab to be on this list since everyone says one of those 2 episodes caused them nightmares. As a kid, they didn't scare me but one episode that did was night of the weremole. That creature scared me so much and I had nightmares about it grabbing me through the bed and then dragging me down and tearing me to shreds. I re-watched that episode and I noticed I missed all of the jokes there. Like the wack-a-mole part. Or when the doctor tells murel that there's nothing to worry about when her hand is massive. I'm still kinda scared of it as an adult but. This episode will still be remembered by me along with the space squids and the one with the man eating vegetables.

  • @mr.knightthedetective7435

Scariest, iconic episodes to me in no particular order:
Night of the Weremole- Weremole Muriel chase was suspenseful
Head of Beef- the man-eater implications
The Demon in the Mattress- all round scare to scare
King Ramses Curse- King Ramses had me genuinely tucked in blanket terrified
Courage in the Big Stinkin' City- the screaming crazy girl scared the shit out of me
The Revenge of Chicken from Outer Space- headless chickens head-popping slideshow made me go YI-IKES and headless Eustace gave me unexpected scare at the end
Car Broke, Phone Yes- another alien episode with scary overtones
Hot-head- Eustace exploding frustration had me in suspense

You are a genius- or maybe I think this because we think alike. Lol! I watched Courage with my granddaughter every weekend when she was 8. She absolutely loved the mix of horror and snark.(She's absurdly intellegent and as an only child, not really childlike in the typical way.) Your list is perfection. I love "The Gods Must Be Goosey," "Queen of the Black Puddle," "King Ramses Curse," "Remembrance of Courage Past," and "A Night at the Katz Motel." These are just a few of my favorite episodes as well as your list. I think I might have duplicated a couple, I'm sorry if I did ☺️

A favorite moment was in "Courage in The Big Stinkin' City" (loooove that title) when Courage, while exploring the spooky red halls and stairwells, discovers the little girl in one of the apartments. Holy moly, that was awesome. Shades of Large Marge from "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure".
Another fine aspect of this series was the amazing color palette they used, and many of the background designs. Sublime and strange and memorable.
