  • A couple of weeks ago Take to the Road got the chance to spend some time with a super rare 1978 Ford Capri Faberge, at the world famous Silverstone racing circuit. This is a genuine Faberge team Capri built for the 1978 season. Under the bonnet lurks a beast of an Essex 3.0 V6 engine. It sounds epic!!!

    The Essex 3.0 V6 is probably the sweetest sounding V6 pushrod engine ever made. I had an Aussie built Mk1 GT 3000 fully worked road going sleeper which used to give the local built V8's and exotic imports hard time.

      @TaketotheRoad  Před 5 lety +1

      It sure does sound gorgeous doesn’t it! And a bit overlooked compared to V8 motors in terms of sound. Your build sounds cool. Must have been huge fun especially as a sleeper😎👌

      My brother had a MKIII 3.0s like that, had Vulcan full race heads, burton GpA cam, high comp pistons complete janspeed exhaust system. Would rev to over 7500rpm, It sounded incredible, like a Ferrari.

      That was some build for sure! It’s amazing how high they could rev. Could listen to that engine all day😎👌

      3kneeboi do you know if he used an alloy timing gear or the steel ones? As I’ve heard horror stories of snapping cams at high rpm

    Sweet sounding engine . And I've still got a bottle of brut 33 - the aftershave of choice for the 70s ladies man .

      Cheers Andy! Awesome stuff that Brut 33. It certainly was the aftershave of choice back then. Think they did a talc and shaving cream too. Better keep that bottle. It is a piece of history!

    Sounds and looks amazing! People seem to forget how much the Capri's won in everything they entered, they always bang on about the Escorts. The 2.8 just wasn't as good as a 3.0. I've had quite a few 3.0 capris, some were taken to 3.1, with stage 3 heads etc. Tried 3 or 4 different carb set ups too. but I went the Chevy V8 route with my current one and don't regret it at all, the sound alone was worth it. The parts for Essex v6 engines are ridiculous prices now.

    I owned a Ford Capri (yellow signal) 1978 V6 2.8 ltr standard and 4 speed manual transmission,140 feet lbs at 2,600 rpm, , here in Canada, whit double body carburetor: max speed 185 km / h at 4,800 rpm. It's not a vehicle; it is a magnet on asphate or on gravel. The day or the old version of this Capri will come back on the market, I will be the first buyer.

      You can do a lot with the Essex V6. The engine in the Faberge car is a very high end build. And it sure looked rapid on the track.

    I'm gonna shove a 3 litre V6 in my Capri... from a Jaguar S-type. 240HP when standard... lots more to be had, 300 easily achievable.
    Dunno if I want that much though, it is already pretty scary with the current bored-out 2.9 block. That Essex sounds sweet though.

      @TaketotheRoad  Před 3 lety +1

      The Jag V6 should be a good upgrade. I’ve been in a Metro 6R4 with one of those and it was epic. The Cologne V6 can be tuned well too and they sure sound good. Best of luck with your conversion. Sounds like it will be fun😎👍

  • @EugVR6
    @EugVR6 Před 5 lety +3

    Really nice sound, are they about 320hp like the Lavant, Shell Gordon Spicer capris?....I saw a 1978 Lavant ex touring car 3.0s capri, show a clean set of heels to a Ferrari 430 challenge car a few years ago at a Goodwood test day..very fast capri and yes the Ferrari driver said afterwards, he thought he would of beaten the capri and was slightly gutted but it was all good fun for the day.....

    • @TaketotheRoad
      @TaketotheRoad  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't know the numbers on this one. I did ask but was told it is a secret, since the car is used for competition at the likes of Goodwood etc. It is going to be somewhere between 200-300BHP. But if you saw one beat a Ferrari 430, then they must be able to squeeze a lot more out of the V6. The Capri body is very heavy, they have a lot of metal in them. So it would need all that grunt to outrun a modern light Ferrari.

    • @EugVR6
      @EugVR6 Před 5 lety +3

      Take to the Road the guy who owned the capri said it was an ex works car and the shell had been acid dipped to thin the metal for weight saving when it was first built and total weight was just under 1100kg with a ric wood 320hp v6 and he had slicks, the 430 challenge car is a standard road car on sticky road tyres and had the FIA air restricter in with roughly 460hp, which is less than the road car but around the 1400kg mark...it was close spectacle but again the drivers make a difference too but being an open test day isnt really proving anything but it was 5 or 6 laps of fun for us spectators.

    • @TaketotheRoad
      @TaketotheRoad  Před 5 lety +1

      Interesting info. I expect the Faberge Capri had the same applied to it as well as it was a factory build. Hard to tell. Under 1100kg for one of them is impressive. I did notice on the Faberge car though when opening the doors, you could really feel how heavy they were. But obviously everything is stripped out inside. And in the video you could hear the noise generated by the stones hitting the floor. It was so loud! Obviously yeah a lot of it is down to the driver. A lot of fun to watch though!

    • @EugVR6
      @EugVR6 Před 5 lety +2

      Take to the Road If my memory serves me right, The GAA capri's were just under or just over a 1000kg with 470hp quad cam V6, imagine what that feels like to drive!
      The last 1973 RS2600 race cars with maxed out 2.8 engines with westlake heads were about 950kg with 330hp,
      I did find some ford test figures for the race car RS2600 with 0 to 125mph being done in 14.4sec!
