- Hi everyone! This video took a lot longer than I thought it would. It was intended to come out in June, but it wasn't nearly ready yet. The I had my heart set on July, but I had a play to direct, and thus, it was pushed back. But it's finally here! The long awaited sequel to my Homestuck Iceberg video, in which I go into more detail about leprechauns than anyone ever should.
Also, it just so happens that I currently have 413 subscribers! So let's call this a 413-subs-special.
The final render of this video for some reason removed some sound effects, so please pretend that the Deltarune stock explosion sound effect and the Kool Aid Man saying, "OH YEAH!" are still in there. Just put them wherever you want.

to be fair, leprechaun romance suits were invented to take the piss out of homestucks fandom on tumblr for jumping into the deep end with quadrant shipping. like the dancestors, its a mean joke towards teenagers who were fans of the comic. we were mever really supposed to grock charms in any real sense, though we can guess and piece together a whole picture through crumbs left in the comic

A few notes i would like to add:
In the (probably not canon) Paradox Space comic: The Inaugural Death of Mister Seven, Crowbar says "They're all wrong for balloons, anyway. Trust you, it wouldn't work out", and "Besides, you aren't down with moons. It's not how you roll". This confirms that compatibility between charms differs from leprechaun to leprechaun, along with a few specific incompatibilities.

Maybe you could look at it like a graph with the top left (the heart/unconditional love) being 0,0 and the more you move right the more it focuses on jokes and pranks well the more you move down the more conditional/controlling one side of the relationship becomes; meaning leprechauns looking for a more equal relationship would be unsuited for the lower charms well leprechauns looking for a more emotional relationship would be unsuited for more right charms and vise versa. Just throwing out ideas here.
Also to use calscalzones example of the heart, diamond, pot of gold being love, friendship, and pure pranksters I think the only change needed would be to point out that the pot of gold is more a mastermind and minion prankster relationship.

Here's my proposal: the charms represent stuff they like to do together or find themselves doing automatically. Hearts: romance, pot of gold: moneygrubbing, wagers, scams, and coin tricks, blue moon: repeated chance meetings, like they always randomly manage to be in the same place at the same time, horseshoe: betting games, like literal horseshoes and horse racing, clover: having good luck in general together, rainbow: liking candy, winning candy as prizes like at a fairgrounds or pinatas, balloons: parties, comedy, doing clowning with pranks and party games, star: straight-up competitiveness with cheating and skullduggery, diamonds: finding and collecting rare trinkets and artefacts, the more unique and valuable the better, aquired by any means nessisisary. They find attraction based on what they do or would like to do to/with eachother, and by playfully enacting these rituals, show affection and self-expression. Compatible leprechauns enjoy the same pursuits as eachother, or being with eachother makes the pursuit enjoyable. Maybe!

I feel that the fact that they can have a combination of any or all of the charms makes the idea of the charms being on a spectrum an impossibility since they have to be distinct enough to be clearly defined in Any combination. So the chart would have to be more of a list of types of prank and mischief than a spectrum from lovey to mischievous

i also think that the reason hussie chose to have clover feeling a certain way about being beaten up by karkat and jack is simply that the rhyme for lucky charms starts with "hearts, stars, and horseshoes". through your explanation, the surface level understanding of that trove could be love for the heart, the desire to prank with the star, but /also/ a strange horse themed infatuation with the horseshoe; quite on brand for our clown-y author. when you play horseshoes you have to throw your shoe-shaped links at a stick so it also could just be some vulgar joke about being gay i guess. furthermore, eventually not in canon but irl the pot of gold gets turned into an hour glass and the moon becomes blue. i think the moon could stand in for rare opportunities and lucky chance meetings between leprechauns especially with timeline shenanigans, and the change from gold to an hourglass could be the urge to SPEND / TIME with them. i think the inclusion of the pot of gold and gold moon was deliberate. the rhyme was changed in 2008, just before the publishing of the comic. be that as much of the comic was written with 2009 in real time in mind, it would be understandable that not every memorable reference stays clear, especially with the mish-mashing of timelines and the ever fading memory of the 90s. the balloon was added in this change, as well as changing the gold to an hourglass and the moon to blue, so ON TOP of the leprechauns having complex romance systems, but theyre also ever changing and being merged with other timeline's understanding. maybe in a bout of time hopping one of them entered a timeline where the moon was gold and not blue, or they spoke with an alternate reality self and learned about balloons. the 4D chess that is understanding these charms goes hella deeper with understanding that maybe not all of these romance terms and systems were understood at first, or maybe they were in different timelines and were learned about through time traveling. its?? weirdly philosophical??
unironically, i think itd be cool if we all came together and formed our own idea about what these charms mean and use them to the extent that some people really do use quadrants to understand their relationships and the ones around them. love is so much deeper than whats been given to us by our ancestors tbh. besides everything is canon, so really we can say what they mean however we want and it cant be really argued -- anyone who says otherwise is just a spoilsport. cringe does not exist in this universe and party poopers can go poop their own parties

Though you put it on screen, you seem to have missed probably the best hint we have. While clover is on the ground, tied up by karkat, his eyes flash 3 symbols. This indicates that his feelings in that moment are likely romantic, relevant to the situation, and directed at karkat, who defeated, humiliated, and spared him. Maybe you did use that in your logic while creating the table, but you didn't include that in your argument for the validity of the table.
So like, that's extra evidence and a working example of the table in practice, if correct

okay all i can think of is the idea of female leprechauns existing and by extension reproducing homosexually as well and straight leprechaun romance being seen as super weird culturally and having jig donors be a thing and this is all so dumb and i love it.

@Cal's Calzones tbh I really wish for more problem sleuth content to have a great big expanded universe for that whole thing. Pre homestuck MSPA had such a neat vibe and I wish I was there for it.
Ok so does this mean Top to Bottom can be seen as whether the ship is Love or Prank based while Left to Right can be seen as whether Love or Pranks are pursued?
While interesting, this way of designating the chart kind of totally defeats the explicitly mentioned "charms are not mutually exclusive" thing.
It is far more likely that each charm is more distinct from each other in such a way that achieving multiple silmultaniously is possible.
For example, perhaps the horseshoe charm represents something akin to people who are and enjoy being intellectual sparring partners, rainbow could be those who simply enjoy each other's company while doing their own thing, and a clover might be those who consistently "get away with things" with each other.

To put it more simply, I think their supposed to be closer to badges of general dynamics you've had with an important person in your life (like you could be romantic, or you could be someone fun to work with, or someone to have fun with like pranks ect). I still wonder if that is the case, can't shake the feeling we are simplifying these poor guy's romance but oh well

Hi! as the Literal Only crowbar fan Ever, i just want to point out that saying that crowbar and die are comprable is a bit misleading. caliborn gifts the crowbar to crowbar, and prior to that literally cannot do anything. iirc hussie (the character) tells caliborn "he doesnt have any powers" when caliborn asks - because up to then every single leprachaun (including die) had come with their own power. crowbar is different because he didnt come prepackaged with the crowbar. in the innagural death of mr seven, theres a few pieces that make him stand out from other leprachauns in general as well, and hes probably considered a huge weirdo to most other leprachauns.
I love intermission fans so much. thank you for this info! I've gotten a few comments about that paradox space comic, I definitely plan on looking into it. I believe that bit about comparing crowbar and die came from the wiki, but I had forgotten about that distinction from later acts.

Imma be honest I saw another way of analyzing these into actual cereal charms meaning and I now have been using a big old excel sheet to categorize a bunch of my relationships
I figured that sawbuck may have been using a 10 gauge shotgun, another gun pun. and that the Walter PPK has a full capacity of 11 rounds. I haven't come up with a reason 13 uses a Rhino revolver or the minigun. I also believe that Doc scratch being omnipotent and capable of teleportation ties in to the character Q from start treck, because he is like a Q ball
great video, though something else interesting to note about crowbar is the implication that he does have a time-based power: he can remember different timelines. in inaugural death of mister seven crowbar goes on a lot about how it's his job to "remember" and, more specifically, says he remembers the first time he was offed "like it was yesterday". if the comic got continued i feel like we would have gotten more elaboration on this but as it stands it seems crowbar's able to remember things he'd only be able to remember through timeline shenanigans, i.e., his death
he also says he remembers his first kiss so presumably we would have also seen that in a hypothetical pt 2. we are truly living in the worst timeline

I'm surprised that the "Star Heart Horseshoe" gag from Problemsleuth wasn't explained in your not tangent. It would go along way to explain how carpations seem to understand some Leprechaun romance since they ostensibly came from the same source.
based on several comments and on the speculation at 36:44, there could be a sort of 3-way "axis" deal going on, where some of the charms are luck based, maybe based on how well pranks go, then based on how very innuendo-themed the whole about leprechaun romance seems to be, it could be spoken in "domination" terms
then much like a D&D alignment chart, it could be a cross-section system where Luck takes a place similar to neutrality, and then there's the two axis which would be the Romantic (Dominant versus Submissive) and a "pranking" axis (in a sort of Prankster vs Straightman, one likes doing pranks, and the other enables pranks to be done), this could also explain why some charms seem to be incompatible (in a "oh no they're both bottoms!" kind of way) and why do you need at least 3 charms to form a trove, because you might both "be tops" but maybe you are a compatible PranksterxStraightman/Prankee duo. this MIGHT tamper a little with the "charms arent mutually exclusive", but maybe this speculation will provide some insight and further development, like, some leprechaun must enjoy getting pranked themselves, right?
Also a Small edit but I also realize that this could leave out vers, but maybe Vers leprechauns just have multiple charms at once

The way i puzzled this out was pretty similar, but different just a bit! I ended up sorting the charms more like a traditional dnd alignment chart, with rows being person (other centered, dynamic centered, and self centered) and columns being physicality levels (highly physical, kinetic but not physical, display based), with mixed pranking and romance being more a product of charm combinations.

i love the idea of romance built upon japery and romance because japery is like one of my favourite things
that being said, the idea of "collecting' charms puts me off of your interpretation a little. its a good interpretation and the only real one that could be theorised with any actual sort of 'evidence" to back it up, but in my head i feel like itd work sorta like
heart being love, the diamond could be like trolls sort of platonic soulmate stuff, but then the other charms could each be for one thing too, like the clover for games of luck, the horseshoe for jigs (sorta like, more 'sexual" since jigs are the mating ritual), and other symbols for stuff like pranks and jokes and other stuff. thatd mean when you have multiple charms, it could be like a mix of pranks and games of luck and jigs, or a strong reproductive trove could have love and jigs and some other third thing (for some reason im inclined to pick the rainbow)
its all just ideas and there will presumably be no concrete answer ever though, which is a shame. unless, of course, hiveswap goes in a completely different direction to anything anyone was expecting, or homestuck^2 comes back from the dead and has intense leprechaun lore

another weird point: in both timelines, humans only get named at the age of 13. which begs the question: why? and do they just refer to themselves by their gamer tags until they reach 13 years? it's something that never really gets addressed bc the youngest of the group turns 13 before the game starts but... what if the game had started BEFORE john's birthday? would his name just have been EB for the remainder of the session? in school, was he putting GT as his name? and does changing his name to EB mean that john (or june, rather) was trans-coded this whole time????

Close, but we have seen a scrap or two of what Leps are like for eachother. This is close to perhaps the red side of things, but im not convinced this is the end of it
Oh, hell yeah
Y'know, before you made the analogies for every symbol, had to take a quick break and had time to speculate on my interpretation of the comparison to an alignment chart.
And we come to very similar conclusions!
To contextualize how I had to speculate on the analogy is that I see the alignment chart on a diagonal gradient, where the two pure color points are lawful good and chaotic evil. The gradient reaches 50/50 along the chaotic good, neutral, lawful evil line. The gradient transitions from "Selfless" to "selfish". Lawful Good is 100% selfless, while Chaotic Evil is 100% selfish. An LG will uphold a code of conduct that is to the good of others, even at their own sacrifice. A CE will do things pure because they want to, and even due to impulse, they never care about others in their actions which ends up portraying them as evil.
Alright, so how does this work with our lucky charms? Well there's no "good" and "evil" here, nor selfless or selfish, either! Instead you must replace "selfless" with "love" and "selfish" with "trickery". Where you reached the exact conclusion. Heart is purely positive romance, complete love with no japery or pranks. Pot o Gold is pure japery, complete jokester territory with many laughs.
Now following the gradient... we have to make unique interpretatons for the two corners, bloon and star, since they can't be the exact same thing, there must be a difference. That difference is in presentation and intention. Chaotic Good people do the wrong things for the right reasons. Lawful Evil people do the right things for the wrong reasons. Thus they're "Evil/Good" and "Good/Evil" respectively. Since we're replacing these terms, it ends up as follows. Star is "Trickery/Love" and Balloon is "Love/Trickery".
What this looks like is as follows. Stars will primarily prank their partners, but do it out of sincere love for them. The kind of person to hit on you by actually hitting you. Their pranks will toe the line of going too far, but the reassurance of love prevents you from staying mad at them too long.
Bloons will present love and romantic actions, but do it as a prank. They will want to gain your trust, and share in romantic feelings, but it's just so you might let your guard down, and they slip a whoopee cushion under your ass. Interesting how the symbol almost LOOKS like a whoopee cushion...
So there we have it, one PRESENTS trickery but INTENDS love, the other PRESENTS love but INTENDS trickery. Oh and diamonds? They're completely without any draw in any of the love or trickery directions, and find attraction outside of that binary.
The in betweens? Well, that ends up being a 25/75 of the same relationships described with stars and bloons, depending on which side of the gradient they're on. Moon is 25 Prankster Present/75 Love Intent, Clover is 25 Prankster Intent/75 Love Present, (where 25% means half the time they adhere, and half the time do not, and 75 means they are leaning much stronger into that aspect) Horseshoe is 25 Love Intent/75 Prankster Present, Panbow is 25 Love Present/75 Prankster Intent.
And there you have it, each of the symbols represent a dynamic actions and intentions form of relationship. Which tackles the archetypes of unique expressions of attraction. As well as tackling relationships which aren't typical marry me commited romance, but comprise more of a fling or friends with benefits situation. Though I guess I can't say for certain, maybe two leprechauns currently in the pot of gold in their trove will end up committed, married partners. I also like how troves present dynamically altering relationships. Showing how someone might begin with mostly prankster intentions, fall into a mess of pure love, but then return to a shining star romance once they miss the spice of their old dynamic, the trickery.
There must, therefore, be 16 (4x4) types of romance for Squiddles/Horrorterrors.

not really an expert in any other quads really, and not meaning to be a snarky assmunch, but moiraillegiance kinda isnt really 'platonic soulbros', hussie said otherwise in one of his JK Rowling lore dumps in his books. it's just one troll pacifying another. but that doesn't mean a healthy moiraillegence per se, and i don't believe that what equius and nepeta had and, to a lesser extent, what vriska and terezi had was as scarce as it seems.
one interesting fun fact we know about troll culture is that quadrants are a big thing. we also know the term karkat coined, the "human disease called friendship". karkat may be loud and stubborn, but, especially when he was 13, heavily subscribed to the ideals and views in Alternia. he was a massive bootlicker. he would not denouce a thing that was widely popular, and he would not push it onto the humans if it was not a thing humans suggested in the first place.
i'm not denying that the alpha trolls were friends, but the close and kind friendship pushed by the humans is different to the sometimes murderous and vengeful relationships of the trolls. friendship did exist on alternia, but it wasn't like how we understand it. besides, i think it was said once that most trolls dont form groups without killing each other off at some point. our trolls did that. to sum it up, i don't think that friends could be trusted and cared for the same way we do on earth because the alpha trolls live in assdick shithell.
so where do trolls turn to for acceptance and trust? that's right, their quadrants. specifically their red and pale quadrants. matespritship is already hailed as the perfectly lovey-dovey relationship, but only having one troll in your life who you could trust might get a lil annoying, especially if that was your (human's view on romance) romantic partner. so they might turn to the only other one in their life contractually obligated to not kill them, their moirail.
i believe that the moirail was the only (human's view on romance) platonic relationship that trolls could safely have. if there was only one person in your life besides your concuspient partner who you could trust, wouldn't you be close with them? would it be a far fetch to call that troll, your moirail, your best non-concuspient friend, your platonic soul bro?
to sum it up, the only requirement for a moiraillegence is pacifying another troll, but i believe that in alternian society, what the majority of the fandom percieves as the standard moiraillegence probably happened a lot in canon. also i never played hiveswap and i dont want to, shut up and your welcome dickfarts
