  • This is a recording from the archives of WIRL AM 1290 in Peoria, IL. Thanks to Spencer Stewart who saved the original reel-to-reel master (and scores of other recordings) while he worked there. News director, Ira Bitner, recorded this tribute the day Weaver was being laid to rest. Robyn Weaver had worked for WIRL as their "Early Bird" morning announcer for over 30 years. He died unexpectedly at home doing some yard work at the age of 64. This recording was made directly from the original master tape for the clearest possible audio. This recording presents a plethora of information about WIRL's legendary morning personality. In addition, there are audio tributes from Peoria's then Mayor Richard Carver, WMBD's Bob Carlton, WXCL's Don Elliot, and WGN's Jack Brickhouse. I hope you enjoy glimpse at one of Peoria's broadcast legends.

When I was 4 years old, I was hit by a car down Hines street from Robyn Weaver"s house. He picked me up and rushed me to the hospital. I recovered and am still alive at 73!

What a great story! Robyn would have been fairly new to WIRL in 1952 when that happened. Wow!

Glad Spencer kept this and you posted it. What memories. First heard Robyn when I visited my cousins in Peo Htgs in late 50's and when I moved to Peoria in 5th grade. RIP Robyn.
