- Which are the best Starting Characters in Medieval 2 Total War?
There's many ways to judge, but this video mostly looks at their traits, retinue, and skill points - command, management, and influence.
Hope you enjoyed today's video. 600 Likes and I will cover the topic again, for Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion. Only if it gets the support and clear demand though.

Hope you enjoyed today's video. Do you agree or disagree? As this one had to be a little more opinion based.

I am liking straight away
how do you even get 6 chivalry on a normal general? Besides releasing prisoners and a crusade...
That's about it. Release prisoners, occupy settlements and crusade. (I believe they can also gain it by just sitting and governing settlements too, but that counts up slowly.)
MELKOR kingdoms as well please!
have you considered doing something similar to third age DAC, I think there are a lot of very strong interesting Characters
"I've tried whipping them sire; the men are spent!"
Based Emperor Alexius he was a pragmatic centrist.
I was always confused about why dread and chivalry work like that. I mean if you are facing a person who is really kind and known for releasing prisoners than you would probably flee as you will probably get released by the enemy as he is kind so you dont fear you would die if he captures you.
But if you face an enemy who kills every enemy that flees you would hold your ground as even if you flee he will straight up murder you.
I guess you can see it in both ways. Both ways are fine.
I guess most people didnt think they will get captured to begin with, in fact, if they had enough brains no soldier would ever flee the battlefield, since this basically creates a rout, wich makes the enemy automatically win the battle, wich makes them pursuit and kill the fleeing soldiers, and surprise, one of thems it happens to be you.
Thats why if you want to survive, ironically what you had to do is stay on line fighting, but most people didnt think that much.
Most will ignore all rational thinking and follow his natural instinct to flee the danger.
In fact i dont think that the general reputation was that relevant like its painted in this game, unless he was really, really famous for his cruelty/kindness.
But about fear, i could imagine that a average soldier would think like this:
"This monster tortures to death anyone he captures, and he is going to win the battle, better flee now to not get captured".
I think of it more in the Lord of the Rings sense, with Nazgul, Balrogs, etc. having dread, being so purely frightening that you can’t help but be paralyzed with fear and run away, whereas people like Aragorn and Gandalf have chivalry, so purely inspiring that their men would fight with them to the end
@John Doe I mean, you're taking a very specific example of an insane commander, i shoul've been more specific that routing is not always the stupid idea.
A rout is when you, as an individual, act on your own free will and disobey your superior commands . By nature is an individual act and thus chaotic and not coordinated between the officers.
You say that IRL soldiers will regroup/ambush the enemy and not resign to die like rabbits, wich is true, but how will this disorganized, non-coordinated force will ever fight better than an organized one?
An army fractured into a 100 pieces is an easier prey that a whole one, and that's my point.
The only situation a rout is a good idea is when the average soldier is able to see that the battle is lost, but that rarely happened because an infantryman cant possibly see the bigger picture from the ground. It was the *illusion* that a battle was lost wich caused most routs.
It’s just a shame most of these great generals will drop dead within a few clicks.
Usually get better/op generals during mid-game is this the same for others?
@@shaokhan2845 yes, same here. It's because of heritage and the buildings you have
Name of Russian duke Vsevolod
I don’t know why it’s Ysevolod in game, maybe mistake
Where is El Cid from Valencia :( ?
I think that you should have considered weighted Authority more since Faction Leaders with high authority make it less likely that low loyalty generals and captains rebel. I believe that it’s even more important in higher difficulties were rebellions are more likely
Max dread is the best way to play and theres nothing anyone can say to change my mind
Dread is better for General on battle, but tbf with chivalry, giving extra population growth can help rushing for some buildings earlier in the campaign, they also can just sit in the capital with high taxes and not care about population growth penalty as much.
the way i see it: Combat general = Dread. Governor = Chivalry. Dread is easier to get in general, but if you are christian, just throw people into crusades and they get a fuck load of chivalry.
@St. Petersberg yea, but you also dont have go deal with enemy armies as much. + you can just ransom them, if they refuse, you get dread, if not you get money. Its a win/win situation
Other point for dread is that getting it on your faction leader is simply too easy. Having spies and assassins pretty much gives them free dread and authority ( cant rememver how much, but should be like +4 authority +6/5 dread ).
The point of chivalry is to rush buildings. And its very easy to just get chivalry with crusades. I think chivalry with muslim factions is a bit harder go aquire.
Dread has an extra advantage as well in government as it gives extra law, which is public order and reduction of corruption. So not a longterm bonus of growth, but a good one especially for newly conquered lands or rich ones with high corruption
Chivalry also grants additional public order (same amount as dread) in addition to the added growth
New to your channel.... Really enjoying your videos. Thank you.
Great vid!
You trying to say Władysław made me laugh so hard LMAO. Keep up the good video's
Will you do also a worst 5?
I'm thinking about it. : )
@@MelkorGG Would be nice if You did.
The wprst 5 would LITERALLY be every single "husband" or "benefactor" i have ever seen. With a a total of 0-2 command, and none of anything else to include loyalty.
Dread also improves order in settlements. So, it is fine when You want to keep order and prevent too fast settlement growth.
Top 5 Characters - shogun 2 Total War should be next please
i hope you will get to 20k subs real quick
the best starting faction leader is harold godwinson.
Very surprised Laszlo of Hungary did not make this list.
Like this video, I want to see a barbarian invasion guide 😎
Based on this and R:TW best characters video I conclude that Melkor has a thing for grandpas.
Before watching the video I said Prince Louis of France was number 1 but it’s nice to see him at 2.
There are a lot of great generals with high potential in the early game. Istvan of hungary and boleslaw herman of poland come to mind. I target them with my beginning princess.
personally i disagree with william the conqueror simply on account of his age, hes at 50 at the start, and in my experiance at least, usually dies in the first 10-20 turns, so while his stats are great i feel his lack of longevity really negates it
Also poland can acquire a templar guild really fast so remember that
Didn’t know that dread was better than chivalry.
It is better to be feared rather than to be respected
Depends really, If you are playing for a good economy chivalry is better. If you want to destroy and conquer your enemies like there is no tomorrow dread suits you better.
Üstteğmen Tuğberk I always preferred chivalry
@@kebabdefender49 exactly. i feel that chivalry is more valuable early game than dread. sure dread can give you free wins through mass routs, but early game enemies have low enough morale to the point where this is not an issue, and having the extra morale on your own troops give you the edge there. but most importantly, early chivalry allows you to rush for better settlements and castles, which means better units. also allows for better taxation in settlements a better economic growth in general.

Top 5 Best Rome Total War Barbarian Invasion characters. Oh, I also shall tell you a small spoiler, number one is Sprius the Christian Zealot.

Vsevolod, actually this spells like that
Medieval 2: Why don't we make completley useles ruler who didn't have any power and authority best character in game. Srsly this guy didn't claim polish crown, made his bastard Zbigniew his hier instead of royal blood Bolesław (who became a king anyway after wining a war against his step bro and cutting of his hand, toung and eye) and made Poland completly ruined. He didn't even rule on his own. True ruler was his wifes lover Sieciech who was his counselor and ruler of Kraków.
You know too much, WE MUST BE A WITCH. BURN THE WITCH! Or not I kinda want more content.
Can you explain me how age works? In Rome 1, you could have characters living up to their 70s, however, in Medieval, unless you savescum constantly, every single character in the world will die in age 61. (In 60 they are safe, but the moment they get 61, they kick the bucket). Did something change between these two games?
@Generic Name Yeah, the centenary dude was a legend. I finded one too in Orcs vs Humans mod, very rare and amazing to see a duded living the whole game.
And when the family gets really big, their longevity is better tested because you also had women, and sometimes one gets to his 90s, and while rare, these things never, ever are seen on Medieval, wich is a deception and i hope it could be modded.
@Generic Name As far i know, i could only either make them immortal, or to put a new, fixed death age in the descr_campaign_db, but it would be the same, but instead of dying a 100% of the time at 61, they will had immunity to old age lets say, until 80, and then they will die magically. Not very immersive though, i wonder, what they did on Stainless Steel?
@@asasas9146 No actually there is a formula to calculate death chance in M2TW, don't remember the specifics but it has to due to a difference of max-age, and old age. You could make it so generals die off much slower.
it's a bit funny because in the reality prince Wladislaw was rather a moderate ruler. Not terrible but not so great as for that stats.

Loool, really it is written Ysevolod? It is mistake, there should be V, not Y
I expected to see El Cid
What black magic is this that the English faction leader William is not automatically at the top of the list. Just kidding, any chance of seeing the best generals from kingdoms?
Yeah, Poland's king is great. The Hungarian king is excellent as well. Currently he is my ally.
@@user-lb1id9yh1v what do you mean you can't trust horse archer and feudal knight spam armies?

Why did you chose a battle where you fighting french to illustrate 5 differents factions ?
Why do you think XD
@@MelkorGG Well the question is why them ? You could have done 5 differents battles where you played the factions you chose against some randoms. Except if you have something to admit ?
Imo Louis is easily number 1 just because dread is far more useful than chivalry. Why? Chivalry grows settlements faster yet everyone has access to a castle at the start of the game where you get mailed knights which is all you need to win the game. Dread just minimizes your losses on the battlefield which lets you fight more before beeing forced to replenish. Louis beeing only 21 makes this even stronger since he will be your best general for a very long time. Hes an absolute Monster.
But thanks to Wladyslaw you get Templars really quickly
Kurwa Poland strong husariaa ura Bolacyyy!1!one!1
Wladyslav
Hallo wo ist Heinrich?
Chivalry is better because you get to fortresses and citadels quicker.
