Thank you, I am 62 and i have been watching some tech videos to see "who knows what". You are the only one I have seen who knows this repair. I have done 50 to 75 of those through the late eighties and 90's. Plus, replacement of the surface mount , I think they were 162 pin IC's. Good job. i also re-built 16mm projectors, Singer, Bell & Howell, Eiko, Kodak, etc. and slide projectors and filmstrip projectors. The mechanical skills are a lost art. Hell, to repair a FenderRhodes keyboard in the 70's was a nightmare. Thanks again.
12voltvids AV work was a new vista. 16mm projectors from the 40's till the 80's. WWII projectors were built for extremely rugged duty. Hardly ever needed parts, just a rebuild and lube. No scoring, etc. Around the mid 70's came the downhill slide for most consumer electronics. It took awhile, but it happened. thanks again.
Really enjoy these videos, helps fixing older VCRs. I have an old mitsubishi hs-423ur that will FF very very slow then stop and spit the tape out, it plays just fine. It has svideo out. Thought it was the belt but likley after watching this it could be the rotory switch.
@@12voltvids My next tackle is a JVC SVHS machine (the terribly designed HR-SC1000U), but the difference between Panasonic's practical approach to easy servicing and JVC's is,well, horrific - if your video on the SVHS loading mechanism is indicative of their design, so many components have to be needlessly removed just to access the gears. My VCR's state is actually worsened by a hack soldering job done by a tech decades ago - the circuit board is now permanently bonded with the gear's lower chassis. Just want to reiterate thanks for your series covering consumer and industrial gear - you're informative, concise, and frank, and have a wealth of knowledge + humour. Best Wishes - Mark H.
Thanks for this detailed video. My G21 has this exact same mechanism on the bottom, and when I hit the eject/power buttons, this piece your fingers points to at 13:00 seems out of sync with the other gears, making a loud noise and preventing the loading mechanism to work. Everything else seems working. Should I attempt to repair it myself? Nobody else seems to know how to fix these nowadays

I have never seen a G-Deck without a Capstan brake and with this type of belt. All G1 and G2 decks I know have a Capstan brake. So which model is this??
hey, these are awesome videos you have taken the time to post. I am trying to get a panasonic nv-fs 100 (ga1970) lined up, and am so close but having some problems still. the timing marks are slightly different in this vcr, the holes exist in the bottom gears, but on the top side cassette load, and the roller drop gears have different marks. eg cassette load metal gear has 2 dots on the teeth, 1 per tooth beside one another, and a larger counter sunk hole on the other side-ish. The issue originally was when a tape was inserted it would jam and ejected. I have it now that the tape will load ok, but when I try to eject, it jams at the stage just before lifting the casette. the tape is visibly taught over the post which pops up, that's driven off the same gear cog which drives the sliding guides around the video drum. I can't for the life of me see what is off... any suggestions? ive verified caasette load mechanism, roller drop and head thread mechanism move ok individually, i think my timing is still bad. Also any idea what other Panasonic VCR share same gears ? I am worried these old gears are going to break, and one has slightly worn teeth, which I think will strip soon. Jonathan
Sir my PANASONIC VCR similar to this one which you are working has gone into standby mode. by pressing the VTR button which we have to press for powering on the machine is not working only the red little bar led glowing of standby mode on the panel....kindly help
Hello, thanks a lot for uploading these videos about this type of chassis, I have a Panasonic PV-2900 that it was not working, I've already put in time the tower and planetary gears also cleaned both switches and now the loading, eject, REW & FF functions are in good working condition. But when I press play the supply spool moves but the take up spool won't, so because of this the tape came out of the cassette, this lasts about 3 seconds then the vcr shuts off , when the vcr is powered the loose tape is rewinded into the cassette and the mechanism return to the mid load position and the cassette can be ejected with out a problem, I would really appreciate your opinion about this problem, regards.
Hello thank you for your video.I have one question.My VCR player is an old NEC I have one problem I change the 3 black elastics(the 2 of the motors and the 1 the big)are all broken.I change them because put inside the cassette not eject it now is working again take Tha cassette eject the cassette but the movie playing in slow motion and at the eject the cassette not let the film of the cassette to move out I pull it with my hands to put out.What is the problem of my vcr player?

I have a Panasonic NV-HS1000 from 1997, Its only been used less than a week but it stopped working and displayed a E9 error back in 1998. I just took it out and it still has the E9 code. Powering on the drum spins at a crazy high speed and then stutters down to nothing. Not sure what to do with it. Can It be repaired?
Hello: I have one of these machines but I believe my problem is with the Power Supply because trying to power up the VCR via the remote or the power switch nothing happens. Have you ever encountered this problem? Secondly I've got a Samsung DVD-V1000 combination unit and the gears that drive the tape load levers were all at the bottom of the pcb because it didn't have a bottom access panel have you ever shown how to reassemble those gears?Thanks Steve Speckmann

I have a Panasonic PV-D4732 "Doublefeature" DVD/VCR. The VCR plays with beautiful picture and sound for about 60 seconds then stops playing, push play again it plays then 60 seconds later stops playing repeat this several times and it stops and shuts of the power. After seeing your video I tried again this time listening for solenoid noise I did hear some light sounds on the left side of the machine, don't know how loud the sound would be and I think on your video the solenoid was on the right side. Can you give me some help with this, perhaps this trouble shooting could be your next VCR video. Thank you Dave

Thank you for your videos. I have two question. 1) audio tracking has difficulty engage in hi-fi and when happens the L side is disturbed more than R side even fail in manual mode. I fear touching that tracking section because i know there are important adjustments and without oscilloscope perhaps the cure is worse than the disease. 2) I hear a low mechanical noise during play and during "moviola rewinding" becomes more intense. Would you please give me some advice I would like to repair these damages. Its a G Deck Panasonic. NV-F65
Tracking is more critical for the hifi tracking. The audio tracks are recorded under the video track at a different angles but very thin tracks. It is possible to do alignment without a scope. The guide pin on the left side will affect the picture at the top of the screen, and the guide on the right at the bottom. You can tweak them slightly, and the hifi sound will be affected before the picture is disturbed.
Have you seen the power supply failures on these? I forget the names at this point, it was 20 years ago. A couple of leaky diodes and, I think, 2 or 3, out of tolerance caps?

Hi Bros., I have problem with Panasonic vc-f500. The cylinder motor run at very low torque and low speed. I did check the ET level and got 3.1v. (schematic value is 2.5v). When I touch the drum, this level go down a bit (about 2.7v). I did swap the other drum module and had the same result. Please give me an advice, many thanks, I love to use this to play HiFi audio via headphone!
@@12voltvids Thanks for your respone. That model is belong to Japan domesic market. So we find any information by Google. But luckyly, the schematic is nearly identical to NV-F75B. I found that the structure are the same. Drum drived by AN3815K. The servo pack is identical to NV-F75B. (MN6742).

Not sure but is the Z Chassis the cheaper less reliable chassis? I didn't realize there was a "K". Where does that fall? I also thought thus G chassis was a good reliable deck.
The two gears that you point at at the beginning, talking about how they are correctly aligned - those two seem stuck on my vcr. And it's causing quite a bit of problem. The tape loading stucks when they are supposed to turn. It doesn't seem like the gears themselves are stuck, but (probably) what the small one is connected to. Do you or anyone have a clue what the problem could be? The vcr is a Panasonic NV-FS200.
Those 2 gears will not move untill the cassette is loaded. the planatary gear set locks those gears, and the tape guides untill the cassette housing is down. There is a rocker arm that releases that gear as soon as the gear below the cam gear locks. There are 2 gears sandwiched on top of each other. The main cam is on top and an intermediete front load drive gear below it. If you watch the video longer I will demonstrate how they work.
12voltvids Wow! Thanks for the reply! The problem is with the loading - it doesn't complete the loading operation, but stays just before the tape is supposed to go down into its final place, while making a clicking sound a few times, as if two gears are skipping cogs (and possibly rapidly wearing them down!). Followed by ejecting. I saw your other exceptional video about the top mechanism alignment and I figured I should check that out on my vcr. Thanks a bunch! You are a proper mastermind!
Pajaspojken In the other video the top side, I show the metal gear that meshes with the Front loader assembly. If that is a white plastic gear as opposed to a metal one, there is probably some broken teeth on it. The cause for that is the cassette encoder switch is dirty on the side of the cassette housing. It detects when the cassette is down, or ejected. If the contacts get dirty it doesn't register that the tape is out, and broke the old nylon gear. If it is a metal one, it is possible that the plastic one it meshes up with is damaged, or just the timing is out. Check the entire alignment of all the gears, both top and bottom. There are timing marks as I show on each gear. Make sure the encoder switches are clean.
I've been wondering why Panasonic didn't use casted steel in their VCR chassis. Then, I figured that it's because steel is considerably vulnerable to becoming magnetized, isn't it?
12voltvids Probably someone had his hands in it and didn't put it back correctly, otherwise I don't see how the gears that drive the tape guides would be misplaced.
Mr Magnétoscope Alsop went type cleaning tapes. They created many mechanical problems. Made me much more money than the salesman that sold the cleaning tape.

12voltvids Thats an oldie. I was, or am, mainly self taught. A friend managed to get me hired for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1979. All av equipment that was used in classrooms throughout, then, 327 schools. I had 5 years previous repairing stereos and tv's and guitar amps and such at a music store in swarthmore, pa. Times sure have changed. 97 till 2007,tv and home equipment. I truly miss the work. Throwaway kinda killed it. The old projections tv's were an eyeopener. 3 crt's in a 600 lb. box. LOL.
Ah yes the old 3 tube projectors. Fun stuff. 83 to 2003 did it for me as a professional. I could see the writing on the wall. Still stay active working on vintage audio mostly. Work in telecom now.
Speaking of VCRs using this chassis, I just scored a 1988 vintage Philips VR6885 Super VHS deck for about $12 in near mint condition and complete with the original remote. Of course, I couldn't be lucky enough to get one that didn't need attention. I cleaned out the mode switch and I had to recap one of the video boards as they used those darned SMD caps. Fortunately, only two of them leaked, and not too badly. But, it was still a pain to do the work because of how delicate the pads are. Anyway, I managed to get it done and it's now playing with a good, solid picture with VHS and Super VHS recordings (aside from some wavy lines in the video, which are probably due to out of spec caps in the SMPS). Now, what's left to do on this machine is to recap the power supply and replace the old belt with a new one.
Yeah, they apparently did. I had a Panasonic made Magnavox SVHS VCR that had the same problem with deteriorating surface mount caps in the video circuits. And, as you know, you had some newer Panasonic hi-fi units having hi-fi modules using those blasted things ... of course there were some hi-fi VCRs that had Sony hi-fi modules which used those stupid leaky caps, such as some GoldStar hi-fi units from the early 1990s. Speaking of Sony, I have an MDP-605 LaserDisc player. One whole board having surface mount caps that crapped all over place. Then there's all those compact camcorders from Sony and Canon. My goodness.
From what pictures I have seen the inverter board in my car has them too, but I would imagine in a 47,000 electric car that they would use better quality American made components. One would hope right.5 years in, 100,000 KM and not as much as a hiccup.
12voltvids Plus, I imagine that there have been advances, such as more stable electrolyte formulas and longer lasting seals, compared to caps from the 1980s and 1990s in general. And, I'd imagine that the surface mount caps in your Volt's inverter board better darn well be able to take it, considering the application and operating conditions. Too bad the Chinese and South Koreans were kind of slow to catch on, especially with all those bulging caps they made in the mid-late 2000s.
i had a panasonic "slim" vcr back in the day with that exact mechanism and i can tell you, that was Panasonics worst chassis they ever made. the planetary gear wears out fast in those.

I've done hundreds of them. Lots of broken cam gears.
I worked in a warranty depot for Sony, Panasonic, JVC , Toshiba, so I got lots of practice.

Compare this with the R4 mech which I believe was one of the last, and it's amazing how much simpler they made it over time.

Some Panasonic and Quasar VHS and S-VHS camcorders use this mechanism. The Quasar VM-22 and the Panasonic PV-460 are 2 examples.

20:12 - Wouldn't it be easier to remove the flexible circuit board assembly rather than un-soldering the switch?

Yes tons of them. Caps go high ESR and a diode went leaky on some.

Hi Bros., I have problem with Panasonic vc-f500. The cylinder motor run at very low torque and low speed.
I did check the ET level and got 3.1v. (schematic value is 2.5v). When I touch the drum, this level go down a bit (about 2.7v).
I did swap the other drum module and had the same result.
Please give me an advice, many thanks,

Thanks for your respone. That model is belong to Japan domesic market. So we find any information by Google. But luckyly, the schematic is nearly identical to NV-F75B. I found that the structure are the same.
Drum drived by AN3815K. The servo pack is identical to NV-F75B. (MN6742).

Having worked on the NV-7500, I would suspect the two loading belts at the bottom side of the mechanism.

I have a couple of Panasonic AG-W1-P VCRs with K mechanisms that are out of mechanical timing. Can I send them to you for repair ?
Not sure but is the Z Chassis the cheaper less reliable chassis? I didn't realize there was a "K". Where does that fall? I also thought thus G chassis was a good reliable deck.

It's easy when you know what you are doing. I forget the model of that one but the mechanism was common to all the Panasonic units for about 5 years.
The two gears that you point at at the beginning, talking about how they are correctly aligned - those two seem stuck on my vcr. And it's causing quite a bit of problem. The tape loading stucks when they are supposed to turn. It doesn't seem like the gears themselves are stuck, but (probably) what the small one is connected to. Do you or anyone have a clue what the problem could be? The vcr is a Panasonic NV-FS200.
Those 2 gears will not move untill the cassette is loaded. the planatary gear set locks those gears, and the tape guides untill the cassette housing is down. There is a rocker arm that releases that gear as soon as the gear below the cam gear locks.
There are 2 gears sandwiched on top of each other. The main cam is on top and an intermediete front load drive gear below it. If you watch the video longer I will demonstrate how they work.

The problem is with the loading - it doesn't complete the loading operation, but stays just before the tape is supposed to go down into its final place, while making a clicking sound a few times, as if two gears are skipping cogs (and possibly rapidly wearing them down!). Followed by ejecting. I saw your other exceptional video about the top mechanism alignment and I figured I should check that out on my vcr. Thanks a bunch! You are a proper mastermind!

In the other video the top side, I show the metal gear that meshes with the Front loader assembly. If that is a white plastic gear as opposed to a metal one, there is probably some broken teeth on it.
The cause for that is the cassette encoder switch is dirty on the side of the cassette housing. It detects when the cassette is down, or ejected. If the contacts get dirty it doesn't register that the tape is out, and broke the old nylon gear. If it is a metal one, it is possible that the plastic one it meshes up with is damaged, or just the timing is out. Check the entire alignment of all the gears, both top and bottom. There are timing marks as I show on each gear. Make sure the encoder switches are clean.

I've been wondering why Panasonic didn't use casted steel in their VCR chassis. Then, I figured that it's because steel is considerably vulnerable to becoming magnetized, isn't it?

How did the gears and tape guides get misaligned? What caused that?
Rotary encoder causes mechanism operate incorrectly and motor turns past end of travel causing teeth to skip. That or someone had their fingers in it.

Probably someone had his hands in it and didn't put it back correctly, otherwise I don't see how the gears that drive the tape guides would be misplaced.

Alsop went type cleaning tapes. They created many mechanical problems. Made me much more money than the salesman that sold the cleaning tape.

12voltvids Thats an oldie. I was, or am, mainly self taught. A friend managed to get me hired for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1979. All av equipment that was used in classrooms throughout, then, 327 schools. I had 5 years previous repairing stereos and tv's and guitar amps and such at a music store in swarthmore, pa. Times sure have changed. 97 till 2007,tv and home equipment. I truly miss the work. Throwaway kinda killed it. The old projections tv's were an eyeopener. 3 crt's in a 600 lb. box. LOL.
Ah yes the old 3 tube projectors. Fun stuff. 83 to 2003 did it for me as a professional. I could see the writing on the wall. Still stay active working on vintage audio mostly. Work in telecom now.
Speaking of VCRs using this chassis, I just scored a 1988 vintage Philips VR6885 Super VHS deck for about $12 in near mint condition and complete with the original remote.
Of course, I couldn't be lucky enough to get one that didn't need attention.
I cleaned out the mode switch and I had to recap one of the video boards as they used those darned SMD caps. Fortunately, only two of them leaked, and not too badly. But, it was still a pain to do the work because of how delicate the pads are. Anyway, I managed to get it done and it's now playing with a good, solid picture with VHS and Super VHS recordings (aside from some wavy lines in the video, which are probably due to out of spec caps in the SMPS).
Now, what's left to do on this machine is to recap the power supply and replace the old belt with a new one.
Panasonic loved to use those SME capacitors that piss off over the board. Lines in the video could be caps in the power supply for sure.
Yeah, they apparently did. I had a Panasonic made Magnavox SVHS VCR that had the same problem with deteriorating surface mount caps in the video circuits.
And, as you know, you had some newer Panasonic hi-fi units having hi-fi modules using those blasted things ... of course there were some hi-fi VCRs that had Sony hi-fi modules which used those stupid leaky caps, such as some GoldStar hi-fi units from the early 1990s.
Speaking of Sony, I have an MDP-605 LaserDisc player. One whole board having surface mount caps that crapped all over place. Then there's all those compact camcorders from Sony and Canon.

From what pictures I have seen the inverter board in my car has them too, but I would imagine in a 47,000 electric car that they would use better quality American made components. One would hope right.5 years in, 100,000 KM and not as much as a hiccup.
12voltvids Plus, I imagine that there have been advances, such as more stable electrolyte formulas and longer lasting seals, compared to caps from the 1980s and 1990s in general.
And, I'd imagine that the surface mount caps in your Volt's inverter board better darn well be able to take it, considering the application and operating conditions.
Too bad the Chinese and South Koreans were kind of slow to catch on, especially with all those bulging caps they made in the mid-late 2000s.

i had a panasonic "slim" vcr back in the day with that exact mechanism and i can tell you, that was Panasonics worst chassis they ever made. the planetary gear wears out fast in those.
