    Not many people would think of playing D flat scale as a warm up, but it is important to play in the flat keys and not just play follow the dots. Thanks for a very inpiring video, as are all your videos.

    One of the things I play for a warm up is Groove is in the Heart. Gets the old fingers ready to go and gets me in that funk state of mind too. :D

  • @dos_mas_805
    @dos_mas_805 Před 3 lety +10

    Playing broken thirds like you did at 5:42 is a part of my typical warm up as well. I usually start my warm up by playing major and minor arpeggios starting on C major (3rd fret of A string) and working up the fret board chromatically to the 12th fret. Then, run through a major and minor in broken thirds in all keys.

    Great insight, thank you Julia! I am not a bass player but my warm up "gymnastics" without instrument are pretty much the same. I just add some strechings for thumbs, hands, arms, shoulders and neck before playing scales and after the scales before practising music. I can strongly recommend that to everybody who has muscle-tension issues....

    After stretching my hands and back, I like to play an ascending arpeggio exercise. start on C and play major arpeggio, then minor arpeggio and ascend up chromatically. I think i learned this from a Daric Bennett video. I also like to play major and minor scales in broken 3rds and 5ths. After the ascending arpeggios and broken 3rds and 5ths. I'm warmed up and ready to go!
    EDIT: i had commented before watching the entire video and see Julia does the broken 3rds as well. Nice!

  • @dadgad1046
    @dadgad1046 Před 4 lety +2

    Try this.. Finger tips touching of both hands out in front of you. Flex the pyramid it forms to stretch the muscles. No need to push hard just flex back and forth. Next while flexing rotate your hands pointing away from you and back towards your self. That motion builds the muscles in the arms that help move the hands. You will feel the difference right away. This has helped the arthritis in my hands greatly. I hope it helps you or others.

    Okay that answered the question of how I and so many of my friends got in trouble over the years. Don’t swirl drinks in a glass and change the weight by drinking what is in the glass.......as warm up. My second and third base are both older than you my first died when I dropped it down a flight of stairs. Its last notes light me on fire and let me go out like a Jimmy Hendrix guitar. It is simply a pleasure to see how much you enjoy playing. My passion is now working of sounds for video games.......

    Tip if you get used to hearing the metronome as offbeats 2 and 4 of the bar ie where the snare would be in a straight rock beat, it makes practising anything more fun (and groovy) than the plodding onbeats 1 and 3 !

    • @joshstarkey8883
      @joshstarkey8883 Před 4 lety

      Good idea, I imagine you can take it further and try to play so the metronome is on an "e" or "uh" of the beat, or a triplet, and try and go between them.

    • @martinheath5947
      @martinheath5947 Před 4 lety +1

      @@joshstarkey8883 Absolutely yes, great for rhythm practise and especially good for your timing accuracy at lower tempos. If I'm working more on the left hand, notes, arpeggios, riffs and dexterity I default to an offbeat metronome and try to make it dance!

    • @ThomannsGuitarsBasses
      @ThomannsGuitarsBasses  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Martin Heath, yes I also love to hear the metronome as offbeats! Really good exercise! :)

  • @josefelicissimo7310
    @josefelicissimo7310 Před 4 lety

    Simply true, warm up is very important. Regarding the left hand, sometimes I like to sort of squeeze the scales inside two bars, according to the note's value. For example: if I'm playing quarter notes, I'll go up to the fifth and back; upwardly, playing eights will get me to the ninth and back; then, triplet eights up to the 13th and back, sixteenths, quintuplets, and so on... i do it so I can familiarize myself with the odd timing feels that the triplet and other related quialteras cause.
