    Phenomenal Zinka Milanov, one of the most beautiful sopranos of the 20th century! At the beginning of her career she also sang Smetana's Libuše in Bratislava! Thank you very much for this valuable video.

    Late in her career, Zinka Milanov beautifully sings a lovely aria from an operetta I never heard of by a composer I never heard of. I was surprised to read that this piece is by a Croatian composer as it sounds so Neapolitan. I would have thought it was composed by Tosti! Heartfelt singing of such beautiful music.

    What a beautiful document! Video footage of old time opera singers enable us to better understand not only aspects of their technique but also their overall artistry. To see this video is really, for me, a dream come true. The sound of Milanov's voice is always present in my mind, even when I'm not listening to her recordings. You'll notice how clear and colored at the same time her voice is coming out. Thank you for this posting.

    A rare view of a legitimate link to a genuine old lineage of operatic vocalism. Such grace and absolute exquisite mastery. A fine musician, to boot! Of course, in that grand old style, exceptional artistry was expected of exceptional voices and technique. Brava. One time I heard a story about how she went to see Tebaldi debut some standard role that Milanov was known for (one of the Puccini Big T’s, probably?🤷‍♂), Zinka apparently cut her string of pearls during a big aria, which made a long noise and caused a commotion as everybody frantically searched for the pearls! I understand that Tebaldi was given an encore of the aria and sang it again!😂 I have NO IDEA if that is actually true, but the source was very knowledgeable. Music prof at a prestigious collegiate music school and of course an opera queen🥰, who I believe might have actually known Ms. Milanov socially. That is a lapse in my memory, not in his details, he in fact told me, so I’m assuming it must’ve been that he did meet her on many occasions, as I believe it was that they shared a social circle for a time. Again, no idea if the story about the pearls is true, but he didn’t seem one to fabricate such a story whole cloth. He did tell it with great delight-anyone in a similar position would, I imagine!

    A true dramatic soprano. She was in her early sixties in this recording. She was only 27 during her debut singing Il Trovatore, one of her signature roles along with La Forza del Destino, Aida, Cavalleria Rusticana and her incomparable portrayal of La Gioconda. Brava!

      @@rogerchandler8415 Singing the dramatic repertoire does not make you a dramatic soprano. Aprile Millo sang the same repertoire as Milanov, and Aprile Millo is not even a spinto but a lyric. Today we have Anna Netrebko who sings Turandot and what is Netrebko? a coloratura lyric soprano.
      The characteristics of Zinka Milanov's voice are not those of a dramatic soprano, nor a pure lyric one, but a lyric-spinto.

      2. Salce, salce...Ave Maria (Otello)
      3. Rusalka's aria.
      4. Vissi d'arte (Tosca)
      In between were instrumental pieces.

    On the one hand it is marvelous to have a video of her singing, which is great because I'm a fan. On the other hand - shame about the aria and honestly, not really a worthy legacy. Hard to tell exactly because the sound is not all that but basically the pitch sags and really there isn't a proper legato. More like portamento masquerading as legato. Maybe it was an off night.

    • @ivanatodorovic8073
      @ivanatodorovic8073 Před 2 lety +1

      She sings exactly in the style this (not particularly valuable) music requires and she does it great, no real legato needed there. The pitch is very stable, considering her age.

      It does nor cease to amaze me how people criticize declining stars like if they were at their peak. The idea of a last concert is to say farewell and remind people of how good they were as opposed to how they are at that particular moment. It is a truism of course but too many people seem oblivious to this concept.
