"I drink because I'm lonesome & I'm lonesome because I drink" Best line in the song !!!
mine too! perfect description!
Yep.. Nails it!
I call it 1 of the best lines ever put in a song and the way he sings it says it all
I've always loved that line!
This guy is already a fucking legend
yup. just found him tonight. damn
Fucking A
you got that shit rite
Hell yeah rl fucking legend
Yep, but as he sez," I did it a long time for free."
I don't know if everyone who watched this felt that, but real COUNTRY music just punched you in the face. What a great song.
This song when i discovered it a few years ago punched me in the face! This song has sent me on a journey thru country music to find more and absolutely love anything and everything Chris Stapleton touches Steeldrivers and Jompson Brothers...he should stop giving his songs to other artists that hardly do them justice Chris plays them ten times better than the artists that made some of them famous. this comes from someone who once said "i hate country music" can i take it back?
Exactly. The way he sings it. It's just right
Exactly. The way he sings it. It's just right
You hit it right on the head brother.
Fact!
I love his voice. I hope his wins at the CMAs is a sign that country music is returning to a more traditional sound.
+Dītalian And he did! He won three CMA's!
+Dītalian He won three awards at the CMA's, I was sooo happy!
+Dītalian
Red Dirt/Texas country is making Nashville change.
+Dītalian Cole I don't give a damn if country music is returning to anything. For now I am gonna be just thankful we have Mr. Stapleton. Too many awards and too much popularity is only based on marketing and executive management. True music will always be my favorite regardless of what the populace seems to think. That being said I completely agree with you, I can only hope more follow in his footsteps and return...
+Tri Cities Kentucky bringin back true country too lol he's from Kentucky lot of the legends are from Kentucky
This guy's voice gives me goosebumps.
Amazing what a few strings of guitar and a soulful voice can achieve.
The human condition, it puts us right in our place. Music is something else….
There are two kindsa people in this world.
There are Chris Stapleton fans.
And there are those who havent heard him yet.
A drive home to Texas from Tennessee through Dixie made me find Chris and a few others. Brought life back into my soul. A Kentucky boy that moved to TX when I was a teenager...soul has been lost since. I feel restored. I've cried more in 2 weeks than in the last 20 years.
Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Jamey Johnson....these guys have soul in their songs- because they sing their own damn songs.
If you get the chance, go see them live. I took my wife to Jamey Johnson and Chris Stapleton a few weeks ago. Even better in concert than the studio.
The greatest country song I have heard in a long long time.
One of my most favorite quotes is "The best part about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain" except when Chris Stapleton sings it, I feel my heart hurt with his voice and his lyrics. What a well kept secret, Nashville!
Bob Marley was right ...when music hits you feel no pain ..
I grew up in bluegrass music, I played it all my life ... How could you hate this pure music!
I frickin' love this guy, he is amazing. And to add to that, he sure does have a rather magnificent beard.
TheMetalhead678 absolutely Love Chris & Morgane Stapleton💕♥️🎶💕♥️🎶
Think I just heard my new favorite song.. This man is the real thing.
No shit???
I'm going to have to learn that one myself. Very cool song!
This video had like 15 views when I first found it 4 years ago. Now look. Finally everyone has seen the light. If anyone deserves success it's Chris Stapleton. He is brilliant. The kind of talent of a generation.
When Tim McGraw sings it, I don't wanna cry. When Chris does it is something serious...
Chris is an intimate invitation. Every song he sings is like an invitation into his soul. I'm immediately engaged. His effortless mixed with conviction is what is haunting. Time stands still when I listen to him....
I agree
My favorite singer in this town! Love Chris! -Allison
BEST VOICE IN THE BUSINESS... AND HAT!!!
Him and my father have a very similar voice. my father had much more rasp , but this song is the type he would play. he passed away when I was fairly young and unfortunately as time went on.. I forgotten the sound of his voice, most painfully the sound of him sing, and the first time I heard this video it just hit me. a beautiful song and a beautiful performance. he has a moving , strong voice.
sorry for the loss.of your dad. im sure he was a great man with talent.
l can listen to this man play and sing all night. his music moves thru me
One of my favorite songwriters and performers. A guy that is who he is...rare!
Love that Guitar.....
with wear and tear, like jeans....so classically Country !
RESPECT.....
this voice and softness and poetry who wouldnt cry as you listen ;;; good tears wish i could touch peole like this thank you
going to see this guy june 7th at a campground cant wait! its my daughters 10th birthday and she will be sharing that day with ME and Chris!
Had NO IDEA this guy was the original artist of this song. Ive had the song in my Itunes since 2007 and right there listed under the song info on Tim Mcgraws version is Chris Stapleton and Lee Thomas Miller. I could have known about Chris SINCE 2007 but only just now am finding out about him.
+Jonathan Pascuzzi That sucks. Getting the intimate experience watching him live is something that is now gone. Trust me, you missed out bigtime.
+Jonathan Daniel I Know!! I feel like I've just awakened from a coma….where have I been?
Chris Stapleton's debut album coming out May 5th. As good as he is I can't believe he doesn't have at least 10 albums under his belt.
he does just other people are singing them
elizabeth west Think it's because he doesn't have that "commercial look" that Nashville promotes? In my opinion, he can sing circles around the Luke Bryans...etc.
***** you're probably right. It seems that singing about "being country" is what is popular today...as if they're trying to prove something. ...the personification of being country... In reality, true country music is about telling the story of life whether it be about pain or joy...not having to prove anything.
Freakin perch it dude above me
+akbrown15 well said
Damn. So, so good. REAL. COUNTRY. Heartbreaking, soulful. Like I said, REAL. COUNTRY. Thank you, Chris Stapleton, for sharing your talent with us mere mortals.
just hauntingly painful emotion.. one of the best country songs ever written.. Chris sings with feeling... he brings me to tears every time I hear this one. He is just a great artist.
Wow... Best male voice I have heard in a while. I can't believe I just now found this guy
The reason he is so good is melody, story and heartfelt passion, imho
Simply AMAZING, what music used to be.What it should be! Renewed my faith in what is supposed to be "country" music. This feeds a part of me that has been starving for a while now. Thank you Chris for leaving me with chicken skin and raised hairs. New number 1 fan, I just wanted to say thank you man!!!
OMG back for more!!! just got his debut album and all i can saw is "WOW" thank you again Chris! keep going
Had I never even had a broken heart, Chris Stapleton's vocals could still make me understand the loss and grief that feeling must be. Whoa.
Absolutely!
His voice gives me chills. It's perfect
Every now and than I stop by to listen to this song and every time I do I feel so heartbroken, that is what a great song can do for you.....
what an amazingly gifted man...
Chris Stapleton and Jamey Johnson should put a tour together that could shatter this pop-country nonsense that's poisoning our youth. I'm just not sure the world is ready for that yet.
I'd love that my two favs little miranda too
Chris is better than them all. No commercial country, just a guy with a lot of soul.
Chris is awesome.I happened upon the Steel Drivers a few years ago and fell in love. Chris, Tim McGraw doesn't deserve you.
This song's meaning to *me* is that drinking ain't more than what life really means. And I know what this song means, but this is what *I* think this song means to me. I drink every day and, I get a bottle of vodka all the time and.. I don't feel a thing when that vodka's empty. But there's a difference between me being drunk on the vodka, and me having a life, doing things I should be doing. Like having a life and being normal. The vodka helps me hide away from my pain and all the shit. I get this song, "That's the difference, between whiskey and you." I drink vodka, but I get it, y'know? It's sort of the same thing.
I get the same from this song! I'm not sure I want anyone's forgiveness. I want an escape from life's reality. The bottle will always be my escape from you and everything that I can't forgive myself for. I try to walk away from it...but it whispers my name...then screams my name...BREI!!! you need me! It's right, I do! For now, I'll just keep visiting that old friend. Maybe, someday, we'll say goodbye.
There is no denying his better than anything on the radio. I have had the pleasure of meeting him at the Station Inn while with The Steel Drivers. An amazing talent!!
Love this so much !! I don't understand how anyone can go out of their way to dislike . Are you kidding me ?
One of the most amazing voices ever
Outstanding, old school country. Reminds me of an young writer named Kris Kristofferson
what true music should sounds like!!! no stupid music videos no additional acts just a man with his voice and guitar
I want to hit more than one like for this. Will definitely be buying his new album!
I love this guys voice and his old Gibson he's playing !
The pain! 😢
Wow.. I had a battle for a while with alcohol and this song tells all of what I felt at that time!
Such an old school southern voice.. Refreshing!

this man is the REAL deal, humble to the bone, and the most AWESOME writer and artist to hit Country music since its inception !!!!!
His Voice and performance is just incredible... I can not put it in words how much i'm moved by this song... Country is just great! Greetings to all of you from a german Chris Stapleton Fan
I fell in love with this man the minute I heard him sing!was never a country fan but I am now!
Just recently discovered Chris's music and man am I glad I did. I'd just about given up on country and all the shallow cut and paste formula music. Chris is a breath of fresh air. His music, and even moreso the depth in his performances just evoke emotion. This song is one of my favorites and a perfect example.
repeat repeat repeat repeat... I absolutely can NOT get enough of this song!!
man this guy knows what hes doing and knows what hes singing about. Traits like them are very hard to find. keep it up. your awesome
I don't know if it's the norm, but I haven't heard a song he has written that didn't sound better when he sings it.
Poignant, soul-searching music...! just discovering this Irish/American, and his completely original sound, WOW!
You can't deny greatness, Cma, Grammy etc... They will have to acknowledge this man for years to come.
It has been a long time since I have heard the old school voice.. right up there with Merle, Willy, and many other great artists. You have my downloads for sure. Thank Chris for being such a wonderful performer.
Check out Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbell as well. These three are as good as it gets in the music industry right now.
His voice is so chilling... makes me miss the ex I never had, so much emotion and beautiful guitar

This is REAL country music....if this don't bring a tear to your eye, nothing can...
ive been a big steeldrivers fan for a long time, and i love that chris kept the music flowin
I drink cause I'm lonesome & I'm lonesome cause I drink...GREAT LINE!! Great song. I like Tim McGraw & he cuts great songs, but my ears bled after hearing Tim's...Doubt if it can be done better than Chris's!!
+Laurie Havens Laurie - love your comment all can say is that's the difference between whiskey and you

Chris wrote this song for Tim.
Aaron Lewis version is amazing.

I am so honored to hear such a great voice and I hope someday to see you play in person. I saw George Jones and he is for me right there....Keep them songs coming and God bless you and your sweet wife....what beautiful music you make together.
Chris tells the story with his singing.. Nobody compares.
Country has had a few singer songwriters. Well they certainly have one in this man and blessed as he is he is even more blessed with the band he's been given! Good shit I don't care who ya are or what you like, this is the real deal!
Chris is the best country influence since Waylon....deep country soul....you can hear Willy Nelson in his voice. Thank the lord for Chris
man what a inspiration, good ole, heart to heart, conversation, and a finely tuned, SOUL filled voice to deliver, the message... it just goes to show that the CREATORS VERSION IS ALWAYS BEST!!!! what a HEART!!!!!
I first heard him 2 weeks ago. I have to listen to him everyday. He is amazing! Whiskey and You is so true! Reggie
She's been gone out my life for over 2 yrs...I still can't stop playin this song

Amazing artist and what the country genre is all about! Jamey Johnson, Justin Moore and Chris Stapleton are here to save us from bro country!
+Brigmann Bailey what the heck is bro country?
+twylasfaves all the stuff that is majorly and repeatedly played on all big country stations.
+twylasfaves Chase Rice, FGL, Cole Swindell, etc. Something these 4 untalented individuals have to resort to to sell.
Don't get me wrong, I like Cole and FGL, but I also know when I hear traditional, old school country. Stapleton is it!
+Brigmann Bailey u
Angels opened the heavens with this song. So beautiful.
I know I thought so too!! He has renewed my faith in TRUE SOLID CLASSIC COUNTRY/BLUEGRASS.
Not a big country fan, but this man has soul. Keep rocking Chris Stapleton! Your voice impacts souls.
Great Tune. Feel it From, His Heart and Soul. I'm a New Sub to,His Music. Glad to of,Found it Today. !! . 👍 ♡ He's Easy on,Eyes Too 😍 !! 😁
GOD, this song is amazing.
Just a man and his guitar. How powerful!
I love that about every other decade Country music has a rebellion and pushes back to its roots and away from over saturation of pop and rock. You go on Chris! We hear you!
In my opinion Chris is the best musician out there, he reminds me of my Dad so much when my Dad was that age. I lost my dad Jan 18, 2007 and in my eyes he was the best musician of all time. My dad was a song writer and could play any instrument and had the most amazing voice. I know he would have loved Chris. It is crazy how much he looks like and how he has the same mannerisms as my dad did and same kind of sound. I can't stop listening to his music its like a connection somehow to my Dad .
This man gives me goose bumps. I love his music and voice!
Great song, well done!
He is quickly becoming my favorite music artist...
that's one of the most beautiful things i've EVER heard! this voice found the direct way to my heart, and i can tell you: that's absolutely not easy!
