    Developer: Capcom
    Publisher: Capcom
    Year of Release: 1990
    Game Review & Impressions
    ---------------------------------------------------
    I took yet another dive into Capcom's CPS1 catalogue and came up with yet another title set within the realms of sword, sorcery and high fantasy. Whereas Capcom's later games progressed toward the beat 'em up/broawler genre, this keeps both feet firmly in the side-scrolling platform camp, being much closer to the likes of Black Tiger than Knights of the Round. The player controls a muscular warrior, who's mission is to ascend to the top of a magic fortress to recover an orb of mystical power. The tower is comprised of over 50 floors, each full of monsters, traps and treasures.
    Magic Sword takes inspiration from a whole range of games, particularly Cadash and Rastan, both developed by Taito. There's even a bit of Wonder Boy thrown in, with the player's health bar decreasing steadily over time; even if you manage to avoid taking damage, you'll eventually run out of energy if you don't collect enough food to top your health off.
    One of the game's main features is the companion system. A single ally may accompany the hero on his travels, each of whom have a unique attack and special abilities. These allies can be levelled up by collecting red hearts, or liberating an identical companion from one of the many cells found on each of the tower's many levels. The one exception is the Lizardman, who will only join your party if you're carrying the diamond ring in your item slot.
    It's a tough game, but Magic Sword is pretty cool. There are plenty of magic items to find and use, secrets to uncover, and the various allies mean there's plenty of replay value on offer.

    I remember capcom used to dominate the arcade with fantasy-only games. It was one after another, and they were all creative and fun.

    An extremely ambitious and over the top game for its time and it's pretty awesome to look at. The gameplay and soundtrack is incredible. Imagine a game like this today. It could sell millions.

      Not it looking like this, it would have to heavily reworked into the game being heavily story based, and have plenty of DLC.

    This is yet another example of how awesome Capcom was back in the day, pumping out several amazing games within a decade. What a time to be alive. I love that they put those Moai statues in as enemies; between this and all the times Moai have been used as enemies in Konami games, I have to wonder what the decision was for Japanese developers to use them in this way? I've always loved it.

      I heard some time in the early 90s in Japan, there was a big fascination with ancient cultures like the Egyptians and Polynesians. Thinking about it, it is evident in a lot of games, anime, and even super sentai of the era.

    The artists behind these games were really well adept in the use of color. Their games were visual masterpieces. Sf2 was a great example of the artists using color to create beautiful backgrounds. Dalsim stage, Vega stage in France, Chun li stage, Ehonda stage, the colors were so bright and created a warm atmosphere. To me the top two companies with the best artists were Capcom and Neo Geo

    • @persona83
      @persona83 Před rokem +2

      Vega's stage is in Spain. But I agree, the key secret of these games is the amazing color usage. I remember the first time I saw Guile's stage, I was confused thinking it was a real plane.

      Neo Geo is not a company, but an arcade board system manufactured by SNK. They did make more games for the system than any other company, though, so maybe you meant SNK. Neo Geo had a very impressive life span, with games for it being made from 1990 to 2004. It was special for being cartridge-based, so the same board and cabinet could play different games by just having the cartridge switched. There were multi-slot versions of the Neo Geo MVS, with even as many as 6 cartridge slots, which meant that you could change between the games by just accessing the service menu.

      I remember in the early 90s our county fair had a big arcade tent in the midway. It was there that I first encountered this gem in-cabinet. That machine gorged itself on my quarters! I have always been enamored by its design, characters &dynamics. My favorite loyal subjects are the white wizard, dark mage, gargoyle &knight. Favorite minor enemies are skeletal warriors, floating specters &mummies!!!

  • @jackylee5850
    @jackylee5850 Před 2 lety +7

    There's quite a few hidden secrets throughout the game, on a few stages there's a hidden door that lets you skip ahead a few stages
    53:38 That stone power up turns your regular blue charge beam into the much stronger red version, ideally you'd hold onto that till the final boss. Failing that, the spiked gauntlet increases the attack power of your regular attack (not the charge beam) At least you managed to get the maxed level lizardman, the best support character

    When they put this game on the snes i couldnt believe it. The game feels like it has no ending. So i get unlimited play time out of one game, and it happens to be a really good game. Snes version is plagued with slowdown but i couldnt care any less. This game is that good. Capcom was the king back then. Their snes games were just as impressive as their arcade counterparts. When the snes mini came out and the hack was made, this was the 1st game i added to it.

    Both games you start at a base of a tower and enter to kill demons and eventually reach the roo of the tower.

    While the game was technically awesome I found it to be a bit too hard compared to other Capcom titles back then. But my biggest gripe wih the game was that it's too long, which after a while made the gameplay loop and especially the audio design quite repetitive and even annoying. I never really loved this despite Black Tiger being my all time favourite arcade.
